The Thermal Properties of Solar Flares Over Three Solar Cycles Using GOES X-ray Observations
Solar flare X-ray emission results from rapidly increasing temperatures and
emission measures in flaring active region loops. To date, observations from
the X-Ray Sensor (XRS) onboard the Geostationary Operational Environmental
Satellite (GOES) have been used to derive these properties, but have been
limited by a number of factors, including the lack of a consistent background
subtraction method capable of being automatically applied to large numbers of
flares. In this paper, we describe an automated temperature and emission
measure-based background subtraction method (TEBBS), which builds on the
methods of Bornmann (1990). Our algorithm ensures that the derived temperature
is always greater than the instrumental limit and the pre-flare background
temperature, and that the temperature and emission measure are increasing
during the flare rise phase. Additionally, TEBBS utilizes the improved
estimates of GOES temperatures and emission measures from White et al. (2005).
TEBBS was successfully applied to over 50,000 solar flares occurring over
nearly three solar cycles (1980-2007), and used to create an extensive catalog
of the solar flare thermal properties. We confirm that the peak emission
measure and total radiative losses scale with background subtracted GOES X-ray
flux as power-laws, while the peak temperature scales logarithmically. As
expected, the peak emission measure shows an increasing trend with peak
temperature, although the total radiative losses do not. While these results
are comparable to previous studies, we find that flares of a given GOES class
have lower peak temperatures and higher peak emission measures than previously
reported. The resulting TEBBS database of thermal flare plasma properties is
publicly available on Solar Monitor (www.solarmonitor.org/TEBBS/) and will be
available on Heliophysics Integrated Observatory (www.helio-vo.eu)
Re-branding: The Case of Southern Miss Athletics
In late July 2011, administrative trademark judges in the US Patent and Trademark Office ruled, in a 2-1 decision, that the University of Southern Mississippi would have to discontinue the use of its Golden Eagle logo because it was too similar in appearance to the University of Iowa Hawkeye (Hinton, 2011). Administrative trademark judge David Bucher wrote in his majority opinion that he backed Iowa\u27s claim that there would be the likelihood of confusion in merchandise sales between the schools and the âthe overall similarity in appearance of the marks on the goods, particularly in light of the use of identical color schemes, creates virtually identical commercial impressions (Hinton, 2011).
The purpose of this presentation is not to debate the merits of the legal hearing. Rather, the case describes how university administrators, students, alumni, faculty, and other constituents turned a seemingly negative judicial ruling into a positive opportunity to upgrade and improve the universityâs brand. An outline of this inclusive process began to emerge when then-President Martha Saunders stated, âYou can change the way a product looks, repackage it, put a new wrapper on it, but to brand an organization requires people.â USM engaged a local consulting firm to assist with its rebranding effort, and the importance of focusing on several traditional factors was evident.
The present study looks at how the character, pride, authenticity, and strength of the athletic department were incorporated into the new logo and ultimately the universityâs identity. Other issues to be addressed are:
1) The timeline for revealing the new logo
2) How other institutions handled similar roll-outs of new logos
3) Logistic issues in using the new logo
4) Costs of implementing the new log
Spectral Models for Early Time SN 2011fe Observations
We use observed UV through near IR spectra to examine whether SN 2011fe can
be understood in the framework of Branch-normal SNe Ia and to examine its
individual peculiarities. As a benchmark, we use a delayed-detonation model
with a progenitor metallicity of Z_solar/20. We study the sensitivity of
features to variations in progenitor metallicity, the outer density profile,
and the distribution of radioactive nickel. The effect of metallicity
variations in the progenitor have a relatively small effect on the synthetic
spectra. We also find that the abundance stratification of SN 2011fe resembles
closely that of a delayed detonation model with a transition density that has
been fit to other Branch-normal Type Ia supernovae. At early times, the model
photosphere is formed in material with velocities that are too high, indicating
that the photosphere recedes too slowly or that SN 2011fe has a lower specific
energy in the outer ~0.1 M_sun than does the model. We discuss several
explanations for the discrepancies. Finally, we examine variations in both the
spectral energy distribution and in the colors due to variations in the
progenitor metallicity, which suggests that colors are only weak indicators for
the progenitor metallicity, in the particular explosion model that we have
studied. We do find that the flux in the U band is significantly higher at
maximum light in the solar metallicity model than in the lower metallicity
model and the lower metallicity model much better matches the observed

Sensitivity of Yeast Strains with Long G-Tails to Levels of Telomere-Bound Telomerase
The Saccharomyces cerevisiae Pif1p helicase is a negative regulator of telomere length that acts by removing telomerase from chromosome ends. The catalytic subunit of yeast telomerase, Est2p, is telomere associated throughout most of the cell cycle, with peaks of association in both G1 phase (when telomerase is not active) and late S/G2 phase (when telomerase is active). The G1 association of Est2p requires a specific interaction between Ku and telomerase RNA. In mutants lacking this interaction, telomeres were longer in the absence of Pif1p than in the presence of wild-type PIF1, indicating that endogenous Pif1p inhibits the active S/G2 form of telomerase. Pif1p abundance was cell cycle regulated, low in G1 and early S phase and peaking late in the cell cycle. Low Pif1p abundance in G1 phase was anaphase-promoting complex dependent. Thus, endogenous Pif1p is unlikely to act on G1 bound Est2p. Overexpression of Pif1p from a non-cell cycle-regulated promoter dramatically reduced viability in five strains with impaired end protection (cdc13â1, yku80Î, yku70Î, yku80â1, and yku80â4), all of which have longer single-strand G-tails than wild-type cells. This reduced viability was suppressed by deleting the EXO1 gene, which encodes a nuclease that acts at compromised telomeres, suggesting that the removal of telomerase by Pif1p exposed telomeres to further C-strand degradation. Consistent with this interpretation, depletion of Pif1p, which increases the amount of telomere-bound telomerase, suppressed the temperature sensitivity of yku70Î and cdc13â1 cells. Furthermore, eliminating the pathway that recruits Est2p to telomeres in G1 phase in a cdc13â1 strain also reduced viability. These data suggest that wild-type levels of telomere-bound telomerase are critical for the viability of strains whose telomeres are already susceptible to degradation
Preliminary Spectral Analysis of the Type II Supernova 1999em
We have calculated fast direct spectral model fits to two early-time spectra
of the Type-II plateau SN 1999em, using the SYNOW synthetic spectrum code. The
first is an extremely early blue optical spectrum and the second a combined HST
and optical spectrum obtained one week later. Spectroscopically this supernova
appears to be a normal Type II and these fits are in excellent agreement with
the observed spectra. Our direct analysis suggests the presence of enhanced
nitrogen. We have further studied these spectra with the full NLTE general
model atmosphere code PHOENIX. While we do not find confirmation for enhanced
nitrogen (nor do we rule it out), we do require enhanced helium. An even more
intriguing possible line identification is complicated Balmer and He I lines,
which we show falls naturally out of the detailed calculations with a shallow
density gradient. We also show that very early spectra such as those presented
here combined with sophisticated spectral modeling allows an independent
estimate of the total reddening to the supernova, since when the spectrum is
very blue, dereddening leads to changes in the blue flux that cannot be
reproduced by altering the ``temperature'' of the emitted radiation. These
results are extremely encouraging since they imply that detailed modeling of
early spectra can shed light on both the abundances and total extinction of SNe
II, the latter improving their utility and reliability as distance indicators.Comment: to appear in ApJ, 2000, 54
New Insights on the Sequence Stratigraphic Architecture of the Dakota Formation in KansasâNebraskaâIowa from a Decade of Sponsored Research Activity
The Cretaceous Dakota Formation in the areas of Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa contains a rich and well-preserved microflora of fossil palynomorphs. A comprehensive listing of these taxa is presented in this publication as part of a continuing effort to develop a refined biostratigraphic scheme for mid-Cretaceous terrestrial deposits in North America. The Dakota Formation in this region contains four distinctive Albian-Cenomanian palynostratigraphic zones that are used to partition the unit into successive depositional cycles, and each zone records deposition in fluvial-estuarine environments. The late Albian Kiowa-Skull Creek depositional cycle at the base of the Dakota Formation is recognized throughout the study area, and is also recognized in other parts of the Cretaceous North American Western Interior basin. The overlying newly recognized latest Albian "Muddy-Mowry Cycle" is formally defined for the first time in this paper and correlates with depositional cycles recognized by other workers in other parts of the Western Interior basin. The Cenomanian lower Greenhorn Cycle is already widely recognized by many other workers throughout the Western Interior basin. Laterally extensive thin zones of pervasive carbonate mineral cementation are noted in fluvial-estuarine deposits in the Dakota Formation. They are believed to have formed as synsedimentary cements that precipitated below estuarine marine-flooding surfaces in settings related to discharging paleoground waters. The existence of these early diagenetic cementation zones has important implications for the recognition of diagenetic barriers and baffles to modern fluid flow in the Dakota Formation. New stable isotopic data on these authigenic cements are reported in this paper and add to a body of published data on the ÎŽ18O of mid-Cretaceous paleoprecipitation in North America
Episodic X-ray Emission Accompanying the Activation of an Eruptive Prominence: Evidence of Episodic Magnetic Reconnection
We present an X-ray imaging and spectroscopic study of a partially occulted
C7.7 flare on 2003 April 24 observed by RHESSI that accompanied a prominence
eruption observed by TRACE. (1) The activation and rise of the prominence
occurs during the preheating phase of the flare. The initial X-ray emission
appears as a single coronal source at one leg of the prominence and it then
splits into a double source. Such a source splitting happens three times, each
coinciding with an increased X-ray flux and plasma temperature, suggestive of
fast reconnection in a localized current sheet and an enhanced energy release
rate. In the late stage of this phase, the prominence displays a helical
structure. These observations are consistent with the tether-cutting and/or
kink instability model for triggering solar eruptions. (2) The eruption of the
prominence takes place during the flare impulsive phase. Since then, there
appear signatures predicted by the classical CSHKP model of two-ribbon flares
occurring in a vertical current sheet trailing an eruption. These signatures
include an EUV cusp and current-sheet-like feature (or ridge) above it. There
is also X-ray emission along the EUV ridge both below and above the cusp, which
in both regions appears closer to the cusp at higher energies in the thermal
regime. This trend is reversed in the nonthermal regime. (3) Spectral analysis
indicates thermal X-rays from all sources throughout the flare, while during
the impulsive phase there is additional nonthermal emission which primarily
comes from the coronal source below the cusp. This source also has a lower
temperature, a higher emission measure, and a much harder nonthermal spectrum

Cosmological Results from High-z Supernovae
The High-z Supernova Search Team has discovered and observed 8 new supernovae
in the redshift interval z=0.3-1.2. These independent observations, confirm the
result of Riess et al. (1998a) and Perlmutter et al. (1999) that supernova
luminosity distances imply an accelerating universe. More importantly, they
extend the redshift range of consistently observed SN Ia to z~1, where the
signature of cosmological effects has the opposite sign of some plausible
systematic effects. Consequently, these measurements not only provide another
quantitative confirmation of the importance of dark energy, but also constitute
a powerful qualitative test for the cosmological origin of cosmic acceleration.
We find a rate for SN Ia of 1.4+/-0.5E-04 h^3/Mpc^3/yr at a mean redshift of
0.5. We present distances and host extinctions for 230 SN Ia. These place the
following constraints on cosmological quantities: if the equation of state
parameter of the dark energy is w=-1, then H0 t0 = 0.96+/-0.04, and O_l - 1.4
O_m = 0.35+/-0.14. Including the constraint of a flat Universe, we find O_m =
0.28+/-0.05, independent of any large-scale structure measurements. Adopting a
prior based on the 2dF redshift survey constraint on O_m and assuming a flat
universe, we find that the equation of state parameter of the dark energy lies
in the range -1.48-1,
we obtain w<-0.73 at 95% confidence. These constraints are similar in precision
and in value to recent results reported using the WMAP satellite, also in

Imaging and Demography of the Host Galaxies of High-Redshift Type Ia Supernovae
We present the results of a study of the host galaxies of high redshift Type
Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We provide a catalog of 18 hosts of SNe Ia observed
with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) by the High-z Supernova Search Team
(HZT), including images, scale-lengths, measurements of integrated (Hubble
equivalent) BVRIZ photometry in bands where the galaxies are brighter than m ~
25 mag, and galactocentric distances of the supernovae. We compare the
residuals of SN Ia distance measurements from cosmological fits to measurable
properties of the supernova host galaxies that might be expected to correlate
with variable properties of the progenitor population, such as host galaxy
color and position of the supernova. We find mostly null results; the current
data are generally consistent with no correlations of the distance residuals
with host galaxy properties in the redshift range 0.42 < z < 1.06. Although a
subsample of SN hosts shows a formally significant (3-sigma) correlation
between apparent V-R host color and distance residuals, the correlation is not
consistent with the null results from other host colors probed by our largest
samples. There is also evidence for the same correlations between SN Ia
properties and host type at low redshift and high redshift. These similarities
support the current practice of extrapolating properties of the nearby
population to high redshifts pending more robust detections of any correlations
