Fast relaxation in a fragile liquid under pressure
The incoherent dynamic structure factor of ortho-terphenyl has been measured
by neutron time-of-flight and backscattering technique in the pressure range
from 0.1 MPa to 240 MPa for temperatures between 301 K and 335 K.
Tagged-particle correlations in the compressed liquid decay in two steps. The
alpha-relaxation lineshape is independent of pressure, and the relaxation time
proportional to viscosity. A kink in the amplitude f_Q(P) reveals the onset of
beta relaxation. The beta-relaxation regime can be described by the
mode-coupling scaling function; amplitudes and time scales allow a consistent
determination of the critical pressure P_c(T). alpha and beta relaxation depend
in the same way on the thermodynamic state; close to the mode-coupling
cross-over, this dependence can be parametrised by an effective coupling Gamma

Simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of the TeV Blazar Mrk 421 during February - March 2003: X-ray and NIR correlated variability
In the present paper, we have reported the result of simultaneous
multi-wavelength observations of the TeV blazar Mrk 421 during February
March 2003. In this period, we have observed Mrk 421 using Pachmarhi Array of
\v{C}erenkov Telescopes (PACT) of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research at
Pachmarhi, India. Other simultaneous data were taken from the published
literature and public data archives. We have analyzed the high quality X-ray
(2-20 keV) observations from the NASA Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We
have seen a possible correlated variability between X-ray and J band (1.25
) near infrared (NIR) wavelength. This is the first case of X-ray and NIR
correlated variability in Mrk 421 or any high energy peaked (HBL) blazar. The
correlated variability reported here is indicating a similar origin for NIR and
X-ray emission. The emission is not affected much by the environment of the
surrounding medium around the central engine of the Mrk 421. The observations

Metastable Dynamics above the Glass Transition
The element of metastability is incorporated in the fluctuating nonlinear
hydrodynamic description of the mode coupling theory (MCT) of the liquid-glass
transition. This is achieved through the introduction of the defect density
variable into the set of slow variables with the mass density and
the momentum density . As a first approximation, we consider the case
where motions associated with are much slower than those associated with
. Self-consistently, assuming one is near a critical surface in the MCT
sense, we find that the observed slowing down of the dynamics corresponds to a
certain limit of a very shallow metastable well and a weak coupling between
and . The metastability parameters as well as the exponents
describing the observed sequence of time relaxations are given as smooth
functions of the temperature without any evidence for a special temperature. We
then investigate the case where the defect dynamics is included. We find that
the slowing down of the dynamics corresponds to the system arranging itself
such that the kinetic coefficient governing the diffusion of the

Metastable Dynamics of the Hard-Sphere System
The reformulation of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of the liquid-glass
transition which incorporates the element of metastability is applied to the
hard-sphere system. It is shown that the glass transition in this system is not
a sharp one at the special value of the density or the packing fraction, which
is in contrast to the prediction by the conventional MCT. Instead we find that
the slowing down of the dynamics occurs over a range of values of the packing
fraction. Consequently, the exponents governing the sequence of time
relaxations in the intermediate time regime are given as functions of packing
fraction with one additional parameter which describes the overall scale of the
metastable potential energy for defects in the hard-sphere system. Implications
of the present model on the recent experiments on colloidal systems are also

Effective Dark Matter Model: Relic density, CDMS II, Fermi LAT and LHC
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search recently announced the observation of two
signal events with a 77% confidence level. Although statistically inconclusive,
it is nevertheless suggestive. In this work we present a model-independent
analysis on the implication of a positive signal in dark matter scattering off
nuclei. Assuming the interaction between (scalar, fermion or vector) dark
matter and the standard model induced by unknown new physics at the scale
, we examine various dimension-6 tree-level induced operators and
constrain them using the current experimental data, e.g. the WMAP data of the
relic abundance, CDMS II direct detection of the spin-independent scattering,
and indirect detection data (Fermi LAT cosmic gamma-ray), etc. Finally, the LHC
reach is also explored
Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy on Glass-Forming Propylene Carbonate
Dielectric spectroscopy covering more than 18 decades of frequency has been
performed on propylene carbonate in its liquid and supercooled-liquid state.
Using quasi-optic submillimeter and far-infrared spectroscopy the dielectric
response was investigated up to frequencies well into the microscopic regime.
We discuss the alpha-process whose characteristic timescale is observed over 14
decades of frequency and the excess wing showing up at frequencies some three
decades above the peak frequency. Special attention is given to the
high-frequency response of the dielectric loss in the crossover regime between
alpha-peak and boson-peak. Similar to our previous results in other glass
forming materials we find evidence for additional processes in the crossover
regime. However, significant differences concerning the spectral form at high
frequencies are found. We compare our results to the susceptibilities obtained
from light scattering and to the predictions of various models of the glass

Portuguese validation of the Internet Addiction Test: An empirical study
Abstract
Background and aims
Research into Internet addiction (IA) has increased greatly over the last decade. Despite its various definitions and general lack of consensus regarding its conceptualisation amongst researchers, instruments for measuring this phenomenon have proliferated in a number of countries. There has been little research on IA in Portugal and this may be partly due to the absence of standardised measurement tools for assessing IA.
Methods
This study attempted to address this issue by adapting a Portuguese version of the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) via a translation-back translation process and Confirmatory Factor Analysis in a sample of 593 Portuguese students that completed a Portuguese version of the IAT along with questions related to socio-demographic variables.
Results
The findings suggested that the IAT appears to be a valid and reliable instrument for measuring IA among Portuguese young adults as demonstrated by its satisfactory psychometric properties. However, the present findings also suggest the need to reword and update some of the IAT's items. Prevalence of IA found in the sample was 1.2% and is discussed alongside findings relating to socio-demographic correlates. Limitations and implications of the present study are also discussed.
Conclusions
The present study calls for a reflection of the IAT while also contributing to a better understanding of the basic aspects of IA in the Portuguese community since many health practitioners are starting to realise that Internet use may pose a risk for some individuals
LSST: from Science Drivers to Reference Design and Anticipated Data Products
(Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in
the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of
science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will
have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is
driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking
an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and
mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at
Cerro Pach\'{o}n in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m
effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel
camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second
exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given
night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000
square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5
point-source depth in a single visit in will be (AB). The
project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations
by 2022. The survey area will be contained within 30,000 deg with
, and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, ,
covering the wavelength range 320--1050 nm. About 90\% of the observing time
will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will uniformly observe a
18,000 deg region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the
anticipated 10 years of operations, and yield a coadded map to . The
remaining 10\% of the observing time will be allocated to projects such as a
Very Deep and Fast time domain survey. The goal is to make LSST data products,
including a relational database of about 32 trillion observations of 40 billion
