    Emergence of quasiparticle Bloch states in artificial crystals crafted atom-by-atom

    The interaction of electrons with a periodic potential of atoms in crystalline solids gives rise to band structure. The band structure of existing materials can be measured by photoemission spectroscopy and accurately understood in terms of the tight-binding model, however not many experimental approaches exist that allow to tailor artificial crystal lattices using a bottom-up approach. The ability to engineer and study atomically crafted designer materials by scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) helps to understand the emergence of material properties. Here, we use atom manipulation of individual vacancies in a chlorine monolayer on Cu(100) to construct one- and two-dimensional structures of various densities and sizes. Local STS measurements reveal the emergence of quasiparticle bands, evidenced by standing Bloch waves, with tuneable dispersion. The experimental data are understood in terms of a tight-binding model combined with an additional broadening term that allows an estimation of the coupling to the underlying substrate.Comment: 7 figures, 12 pages, main text and supplementary materia

    Revealing the Nature of Algol Disks through Optical and UV Spectroscopy, Synthetic Spectra, and Tomography of TT Hydrae

    We have developed a systematic procedure to study the disks in Algol-type binaries using spectroscopic analysis, synthetic spectra, and tomography. We analyzed 119 H-alpha spectra of TT Hya, an Algol-type eclipsing interacting binary, collected from 1985-2001. The new radial velocities enabled us to derive reliable orbital elements, including a small non-zero eccentricity, and to improve the accuracy of the absolute dimensions of the system. High resolution IUE spectra were also analyzed to study the formation of the ultraviolet lines and continuum. Synthetic spectra of the iron curtain using our new shellspec program enabled us to derive a characteristic disk temperature of 7000K. We have demonstrated that the UV emission lines seen during total primary eclipse cannot originate from the accretion disk, but most likely arise from a hotter disk-stream interaction region. The synthetic spectra of the stars, disk, and stream allowed us to derive a lower limit to the mass transfer rate of 2e-10 solar masses per year. Doppler tomography of the observed H-alpha profiles revealed a distinct accretion disk. The difference spectra produced by subtracting the synthetic spectra of the stars resulted in an image of the disk, which virtually disappeared once the composite synthetic spectra of the stars and disk were used to calculate the difference spectra. An intensity enhancement of the resulting tomogram revealed images of the gas stream and an emission arc.     Assessment of accuracy and applicability of a portable electronic diary card spirometer for asthma treatment

    AbstractA pocked-sized turbine flowmeter and spirometer device, integrated with an electronic diary card (EDC-spirometer, Micro Medical, U.K.), was tested with a mechanical calibrator, in an outpatient clinic and in the home situation. A screen pneumotachometer was used as flow and volume reference.Ten devices were tested; interdevice variability was small with a mean variation coefficient of 1·1% for both forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) (sd 0·5 and 0·4, respectively) for eight settings of the calibrator. Mean difference from reference was −0·131 (sd 0·04) for FEV1 (range 0·38–3·16) and 0·091 s−1 (sd 0·09) for PEF (range 4·2–11·7). No significant deviation from linearity was present.Results obtained in the outpatient clinic confirmed the accuracy of FEV1 and PEF data obtained with the calibrator. However, linear regression analysis showed a mean underestimation of 0·451 (sd of estimate 0·29) for forced vital capacity over the whole measurement range, probably due to a restricted integration time.In 10 optimally-treated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in a family practice, PEF measurements were done in the home situation, both with the EDC spirometer and a mini-Wright peak flow meter. No significant differences in the diurnal variation of PEF were found. The PEF data from the mini-Wright meter were corrected for earlier reported flow-dependent systematic deviations. In the home situation, patients preferred the EDC spirometer. It is concluded that this device is applicable in the follow-up and treatment of asthma at home

    Kidney failure in mice lacking the tetraspanin CD151

    The tetraspanin CD151 is a cell-surface molecule known for its strong lateral interaction with the laminin-binding integrin α3β1. Patients with a nonsense mutation in CD151 display end-stage kidney failure associated with regional skin blistering and sensorineural deafness, and mice lacking the integrin α3 subunit die neonatally because of severe abnormalities in the lung and kidney epithelia. We report the generation of Cd151-null mice that recapitulate the renal pathology of human patients, i.e., with age they develop massive proteinuria caused by focal glomerulosclerosis, disorganization of the glomerular basement membrane, and tubular cystic dilation. However, neither skin integrity nor hearing ability are impaired in the Cd151-null mice. Furthermore, we generated podocyte-specific conditional knockout mice for the integrin α3 subunit that show renal defects similar to those in the Cd151 knockout mice. Our results support the hypothesis that CD151 plays a key role in strengthening α3β1-mediated adhesion in podocytes
