A CORPUS-BASED PROPOSAL FOR THE GRADING OF VOCABULARY TEACHING MATERIALS FOR THE LEGAL ENGLISH CLASS

The introduction of legal English as a compulsory subject in the curriculum of the Law Degrees taught at Spanish universities due to the implementation of the Bologna Reform has led to the design of syllabuses which are intended to enable students to become proficient users of this English variety with both academic and professional purposes. This paper presents a corpus-based proposal for the grading of materials for the teaching of legal vocabulary which can be extrapolated to other varieties of English for Specific and Academic Purposes (ESAP). In order to exemplify it, a sample list of 33 crime nouns (obtained from the legal English textbooks consulted) has been examined in terms of their frequency, keyness and text range values in an ad hoc legal corpus of 2.6 million words, UKSCC. After doing so, Chung’s (2003) automatic term recognition (ATR) method has been applied so as to establish their level of specialisation. Our proposal relies on the assumption that the information obtained after taking these different parameters into consideration might be helpful for the ESAP instructor to rank the vocabulary inventories obtained from specialised corpora so that the materials derived from them can be graded according to the students’ needs

MTOR pathway is involved in energy homeostasis regulation as a part of the gut?brain axis

Mammalian, or mechanic, target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling is a crucial factor in the regulation of the energy balance that functions as an energy sensor in the body. The present review explores how the mTOR/S6k intracellular pathway is involved in modulating the production of different signals such as ghrelin and nesfatin-1 in the gastrointestinal tract to regulate food intake and body weight. The role of gastric mTOR signaling in different physiological processes was studied in depth through different genetic models that allow the modulation of mTOR signaling in the stomach and specifically in gastric X/A type cells. It has been described that mTOR signaling in X/A-like gastric cells has a relevant role in the regulation of glucose and lipid homeostasis due to its interaction with different organs such as liver and adipose tissue. These findings highlight possible therapeutic strategies, with the gut-brain axis being one of the most promising targets in the treatment of obesity

Components of dental clinic patient loyalty as perceived by the dentist

    Get PDF
The dental clinic market has been subject to different changes while have led to the development of a new business model for the sector. These changes have been the great increase in the number of dentists, new business models, the demand of new services, churn patients, among others. With the purpose of stopping patient churn, the main objective of this research is to investigate the perception that the dentist has of the behavior of Loyal Patient (LP) and Non-loyal Patient (NLP) in dental clinics. The study analyzes the data obtained from a survey collected among 220 Spanish dentists who were active during 2012. The main findings obtained from the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) are: (i) the dentist perceives that the behavior of the LP is driven by three components: "Same dental clinic and recommendation", "Patient willingness" and "Low sensitivity to prices"; (ii) the dentist perceives that the behavior of the NLP is driven by three components: "High sensitivity to prices", "High churn and few recommendation" and "Less visits". This study allow to understand patient loyalty in dental clinics by a holistic approach, evaluating the dentist's perception; at the same time, it helps in decreasing negative bias in the dentist in order not to condition their professional behavior when a new patient arrives at the clinic

Clinically significant personality traits in individuals at high risk of developing psychosis

    Get PDF
It is still unclear to what extent personality may influence the development of psychosis. We aimed to explore significant personality traits in individuals at high-risk (HR) for psychosis. Personalities of forty HR individuals and a matched sample of 40 HVs were evaluated with the Millon Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-III). They were also assessed with the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS), Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories (BDI-II and BAI), Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) and Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI 6.0.0). Fisher's exact test was employed to compare frequency of traits. Mann-Whitney U test and logistic regression were used to establish relationships between traits and symptoms, and the effect of age, sex and symptoms on such traits. Most HR individuals (97.5%) had at least one significant trait; 75% had personality disorders, mainly depressive, borderline or schizotypal. Only histrionic and narcissistic traits were more prevalent in HVs. Negative symptoms were related to schizoid and paranoid traits. Depression was more severe with borderline traits. Most HR individuals (67.6%) had more than one DSM-IV Axis I diagnosis, mainly depressive/anxiety disorders. Transition rate was low (5%). Certain personality profiles may not be markers for conversions to psychosis but contribute to high morbidity in HR individuals

Comparison of three short-course rifamycin-based regimens for the prevention of tuberculosis in patients with end-stage kidney disease: Study protocol for a randomised clinical trial (RIFAKiD-TB trial)

Background and purpose Screening for and treatment of latent tuberculosis (TB) in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are recommended. However, there is limited evidence on safety and treatment completion in this population. The objective of the study is to evaluate three short-course rifamycin-based regimens for the treatment of latent TB in ESKD patients. Methods Study design and setting. This is a prospective, open label, randomized clinical trial, that will be conducted at seven teaching hospitals in Spain. Study population, randomization, and interventions. Consecutive adult patients with ESKD requiring treatment for a latent TB infection will be randomly allocated (1:1:1) to receive one of the three treatment regimens of the study: three months of daily isoniazid plus rifampicin (3HR); three months of once-weekly isoniazid plus rifapentine (3HP); or four months of daily rifampicin (4R). Participants will be followed regularly through pre-established visits and a blood test schedule from enrolment to a month after finishing the assigned treatment. Outcomes. The primary outcome will be treatment completion, while the secondary outcomes will be discontinuation of the assigned treatment due to adverse events, related or unrelated to the study treatment; definitive discontinuation of the assigned treatment because of adverse events related to the treatment of the study, and death. Sample size. Two hundred and twenty-five subjects (75 per arm) will be enrolled, which will enable the demonstration, if it exists, of an increase of 0.16 in treatment completion rates either in the 3HP or 4R arm with respect to the 3HR arm. Discussion Results of this clinical trial will contribute to evidence-based recommendations on the management of latent TB infection in ESKD patients

Experimentos Virtuais no Ensino de Física: uma pesquisa sobre a percepção dos docentes

    Get PDF
