The present study is carried out in Málaga, frequently affected by intrusions of air masses with high concentrations of atmospheric particulate matter. 40K is a natural radionuclide and has been associated with the arrival of coarse re-suspended material from the Africa continent. A systematic 13-year analysis (January 2005-December 2017) of the concentration of radionuclides in bulk (wet + dry) deposition and PM10 air concentrations has been performed to test the possible utility of 40K as tracer of African mineral dust inputs in Málaga (4° 28ʹ 8ʺ W ;36° 43ʹ 40ʺ N). Also the atmospheric aerosols are collected using a high volume sampler during 9-year (January 2009-December 2017). It is a prerequisite to know the environmental long-term behaviour of radionuclides an a relatively large number of values are required for statistically meaningful conclusions . The identification of African dust events was carried by 96-hour back-trajectory analysis arriving at thee different heights (500 m, 1500m, 3000m a.g.l.) calculate with the HYSPLIT model , and by the information obtained from the output of the dust regional Atmospheric model (DREAM 8b).Universidad de Málaga. The high frequency of mineral dust plumes blown across from Africa to the Iberian Peninsula significantly affects dust levels in the atmosphere. Therefore, it is of great interest to analyse and quantify the African dust loading over the region due to the impact it has on air quality. This work presents results from a 2-year sampling campaign carried out to provide information on the frequency and impact of these African dust episodes on the concentrations of radioactive matter and non radioactive matter in the lower atmosphere at this Mediterranean coastal site. Aerosol samples for radiometric measurements were collected at the University of Málaga (36° 43′ 40″ N; 4° 28′ 8″ W) over 3-day periods using a high-volume sampler fitted with square polypropylene filters. All the radiometric measurements were performed by low-level gamma spectrometry with a coaxial-type germanium detector. The identification of African events was confirmed by means of 4-day backward trajectories (at 500, 1500, 3000 m.a.g.l.) computed using the HYSPLIT model and BSC-Dream8b dust images. Higher average concentration values were found for the three radionuclides in the set of samples collected under the influence of African dust events. The correlation patterns of the three radionuclides with meteorological variables and with the concentrations of the other atmospheric species were examined, both on the total set as well as on dusty and non-dusty basis.Universidad de Málaga. Events affecting levels of gross alpha and gross beta activities and heavy metals composition of airborne particulate samples

    Get PDF
Particulate matter (PM) pollution is a serious environmental issue mainly due to the presence of toxic substances and trace metals in the atmosphere. The association of PM with adverse health effects has been recognized for a long time. Monitoring of both PM mass and chemical composition is important for identification of the emission source, determination of compliance with the set air quality standards and establishment of effective pollution control programs. In addition, the Saharan dust events have been recognized to have a non negligible impact on the particulate matter surface concentrations recorded in Europe. The objective of this study was to analyse temporal variation in mass concentrations, gross-alpha and gross-beta activities and heavy metal components for evaluating the integrated effects of transport and meteorology on the atmospheric loadings of substances with different sources and to further examine the relationship between the occurrence of African dust outbreaks and radionuclide activity concentrations. Gross-alpha and gross-beta radioactivity measurements are of particular interest for routine monitoring purposes and allow establishing trends in radionuclide concentrations. X-ray fluorescence analysis was successfully applied for the determination of metallic elements on the aerosol filters collected.Universidad de Málaga. Atmospheric deposition of radionuclides has been investigated in many studies from the aspects of both radiation protection and geochemistry. The present study, carried out in the city of Málaga, in the southeast of Spain, focuses on the assessment of the bulk depositional fluxes of three natural radionuclides: 7Be (cosmogenic origin), and 210Pb and 40K (crustal origin). These three radionuclides are useful markers of particles arising from their respective sources. To obtain fundamental information of atmospheric transportation, sedimentation and geological process of particulate matter, a long-term monitoring of atmospheric deposition has been carried out in Málaga from January 2005-December 2016. Samples of bulk deposition were collected on a monthly basis on a stainless steel tray from January 2005 to December 2016. Afterwards, a volume of 6 L of the bulk deposition was reduced via evaporation to 1 L approximately and transferred to a Marinelli geometry container for gamma counting. Additionally, aerosols samples were collected weekly in cellulose membrane filters of 0.8μm pore size and 47mm diameter with an air sampler lodged in an all-weather sampling station, situated on the roof near the bulk rain collector. Gamma counting of the aerosols and bulk deposition samples was performed using an intrinsic germanium coaxial detector, Re-Ge-type (CANBERRA). This study describes the results and then discusses characteristics of atmospheric deposition of mentioned radionuclides with respect to seasonal variations and dependency on controlling factors. The depositional fluxes of all radionuclides showed a clear seasonal trend with summer minimum and high values in wintertime

Tinea nigra palmaris : a clinical case in a rural Ethiopian hospital

Tinea nigra is an infrequent, superficial fungal infection, mainly caused by Hortaea werneckii, which is still underreported in Ethiopia. An asymptomatic 62-year-old male patient sought a rural hospital of Ethiopia, showing dark plaques on the palms of both hands. A superficial mycosis was suspected and a direct light microscopic mycological examination from skin scrapings revealed short brownish hyphae. To our knowledge, this is the first case of tinea nigra from the Ethiopian highlands. This may be due to the actual rarity of the condition or to underreporting.Peer reviewe

Assessment of methods for land surface temperature retrieval from Landsat-5 TM images applicable to multiscale tree-grass ecosystem modeling

    Get PDF
Land Surface Temperature (LST) is one of the key inputs for Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere transfer modeling in terrestrial ecosystems. In the frame of BIOSPEC (Linking spectral information at different spatial scales with biophysical parameters of Mediterranean vegetation in the context of global change) and FLUXPEC (Monitoring changes in water and carbon fluxes from remote and proximal sensing in Mediterranean “dehesa” ecosystem) projects LST retrieved from Landsat data is required to integrate ground-based observations of energy, water, and carbon fluxes with multi-scale remotely-sensed data and assess water and carbon balance in ecologically fragile heterogeneous ecosystem of Mediterranean wooded grassland (dehesa). Thus, three methods based on the Radiative Transfer Equation were used to extract LST from a series of 2009–2011 Landsat-5 TM images to assess the applicability for temperature input generation to a Landsat-MODIS LST integration. When compared to surface temperatures simulated using MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission 5 (MODTRAN 5) with atmospheric profiles inputs (LSTref), values from Single-Channel (SC) algorithm are the closest (root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) = 0.50 °C); procedure based on the online Radiative Transfer Equation Atmospheric Correction Parameters Calculator (RTE-ACPC) shows RMSD = 0.85 °C; Mono-Window algorithm (MW) presents the highest RMSD (2.34 °C) with systematical LST underestimation (bias = 1.81 °C). Differences between Landsat-retrieved LST and MODIS LST are in the range of 2 to 4 °C and can be explained mainly by differences in observation geometry, emissivity, and time mismatch between Landsat and MODIS overpasses. There is a seasonal bias in Landsat-MODIS LST differences due to greater variations in surface emissivity and thermal contrasts between landcover components

José Bergamín, une voix républicaine et dissidente dans l'Espagne de la Transition

    Get PDF
Based on a multidisciplinary approach and favoring the relation between historic and literary studies, this work is presented in three sections, each addressing the main topic: the dissident discourse of the writer José Bergamín in the Spanish Transition, from different angles. The first section approaches the subject based on issues related to the Historical Memory Movement in Spain along with a new understanding of the Spanish Transition to democracy. Against this background, Bergamín s dissident voice takes on a whole new meaning that calls into question the marginalization of this outstanding 20th century Spanish intellectual. The second part presents a thematic analysis of Bergamín s journalistic articles for Sábado Gráfico, the main source of reference for this research. Through this magazine Bergamín was able to freely express his opinions until censorship brought about his dismissal. The third part offers a political and chronological account of Bergamín s discourse throughout the previously mentioned articles and portrays a testimony of dissent with the Spanish Transition, based on his opposition to monarchy and his struggle for the republic as an alternative. This research confirms the validity of the key hypothesis raised, namely that Bergamín was the spokesman of the España peregrina , firmly rooted in a republican faith nurtured by historical memory and experience, opposed to the spirit of reconciliation and accord that guided the Transition and endorsed the present parliamentary monarchy, the original legitimacy of which he never stopped questioning.NANTERRE-PARIS10-Bib. élec. To investigate the effects of a badminton competition with 2 matches in a day on hip strength and range of motion (ROM) and exercise-induced muscle damage in elite junior badminton players. Twenty players (age: 17±0.8 years; body mass: 62.9±6.5 kg, height: 173.8±8.9 cm) participated in this study. Passive hip internal (IR) and external rotation (ER), abduction (ABD) and adduction (ADD) hip ROM, isometric hip ADD and ABD muscle strength, countermovement vertical jump (CMJ) height and blood creatine kinase concentration (CK) were measured before and after a badminton competition during an international tournament. Blood samples were collected 24 h after the end of the last match. Compared to baseline values, hip IR and ER ROM were significantly decreased at post-competition in the dominant (IR=-9.0%; p=0.007 and ER=-15.2%; p=0.002) and non-dominant limbs (IR=-9.08%; p=0.004 and ER=-19.4%; p<0.001). In contrast, hip ADD (13.5%; p<0.001) and ABD (14.6%; p<0.001) strength increased significantly after the competition in the dominant limb and ABD strength increased significantly in the non-dominant limb (9.2%; p=0.001). From baseline values, CK increased after the competition (430.1%) and values remained elevated over baseline values 24 h later (160.4%). Although hip muscle strength increased, a badminton competition with two consecutive matches reduced hip ROM and increased blood CK concentration. This study suggests the necessity of investigating recovery strategies after a badminton competition to return hip ROM to basal values before the next day of the competition.Funding received from Badminton World Federation (BWF), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)
