Reproducing the Bolund experiment in wind tunnel

    Get PDF
The Bolund experiment has been reproduced in a neutral boundary layer wind tunnel (WT) at scale 1:115 for two Reynolds numbers. All the results have been obtained for an incoming flow from the 270o wind direction (transect B in the Bolund experiment jargon). Vertical scans of the velocity field are obtained using non-time resolved two components particle image velocimetry. Time-resolved velocity time series with a three component hot-wire probe have been also measured for transects at 2 and 5 m height and in the vertical transects at met masts M6, M3 and M8 locations. Special attention has been devoted to the detailed characterization of the inflow in order to reduce uncertainties in future comparisons with other physical and numerical simulations. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of spectral functions of the undisturbed flow and those of the flow above the island. The result?s reproducibility and trustworthiness have been addressed through redundancy measurements using particle image velocimetry, two and three components hot-wire anemometry. The bias in the prediction of the mean speed is similar to the one reported during the Bolund experiment by the physical modellers. However, certain reduction of the bias in the estimation of the turbulent kinetic energy is achieved. TheWT results of spectra and cosprectra have revealed a behaviour similar to the full-scale measurements in some relevant locations, showing that WT modelling can contribute to provide valid information about these important structural loading factors

    Get PDF

Vitamin D derivatives and calcimimetics are used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic renal failure. We investigated the effect of calcitriol, paricalcitol, and the calcimimetic AMG 641 on soft-tissue calcification in uremic rats with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Control and uremic rats were treated with vehicle, calcitriol, paricalcitol, AMG 641, or a combination of AMG 641 plus calcitriol or paricalcitol. Parathyroid hormone levels were reduced by all treatments but were better controlled by the combination of paricalcitol and AMG 641. The calcimimetic alone did not induce extraosseous calcification but co-administration of AMG 641 reduced soft-tissue calcification and aortic mineralization in both calcitriol- and paricalcitol-treated rats. Survival was significantly reduced in rats treated with calcitriol and this mortality was attenuated by co-treatment with AMG 641. Our study shows that extraskeletal calcification was present in animals treated with calcitriol and paricalcitol but not with AMG 641. When used in combination with paricalcitol, AMG 641 provided excellent control of secondary hyperparathyroidism and prevented mortality associated with the use of vitamin D derivatives without causing tissue calcification

Comparison of full scale and wind tunnel measurements of the spatial distribution of turbulence components over the Bolund Island

    Get PDF
We present experimental spatial distributions of turbulence intensity components over a 1:115 scale model of the Bolund hill. Our measurements are determined in a boundary layer wind tunnel (WT) without stratification. Our results are compared with full scale (FS) ones. The FS results are obtained from the analysis of the database provided by RISØ-DTU after the Bolund experiment. This experiment was conducted by them during a 3-month period in the winter of 2007-2008 [1]. Three component time resolved hotwire anemometry (3CHW) and two component particle image velocimetry (PIV) are used in our experiment

Aneurysms of the extracranial carotid artery are rare and represent a minority of the carotid surgery in most vascular units. A clinical case of a saccular aneurism of the internal carotid artery, in a young patient without apparent cause, is showcased. They are often asymptomatic, but they also may show (as it was in this patient) stroke from distal embolisation as a debut. The management consisted in an open surgical approach (by meaning, aneurysm excision with termino-terminal. suture of the internal carotid artery, without shunt), 4 weeks after the initial episode

Chronic and acute effects on skin temperature from a sport consisting of repetitive impacts from hitting a ball with the hands

Valencian handball consists in hitting the ball with the hands and it may contribute to injury development on the hands. This study aimed to analyze skin temperature asymmetries and recovery after a cold stress test (CST) in professional players of Valencian handball before and after a competition. Thirteen professional athletes and a control group of ten physically active participants were measured. For both groups, infrared images were taken at the baseline condition; later they underwent a thermal stress test (pressing for 2 min with the palm of the hand on a metal plate) and then recovery images were taken. In athletes, the images were also taken after their competition. Athletes at baseline condition presented lower temperatures (p < 0.05) in the dominant hand compared with the non-dominant hand. There were asymmetries in all regions after their match (p < 0.05). After CST, a higher recovery rate was found after the game. The regions with the most significant differences in variation, asymmetries and recovery patterns were the index, middle and ring fingers, and the palm of the dominant hand. Taking into account that lower temperatures and the absence of temperature variation may be the consequence of a vascular adaptation, thermography could be used as a method to prevent injuries in athletes from Valencian handball

Mass transfer enhancement and improved nitrification in MABR through specific membrane configuration

    Get PDF
One of the main energy consumptions in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is due to the oxygenation of aerobic biological processes. In order to approach to an energy self-sufficient scenario in WWTPs, Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactors (MABRs) provide a good opportunity to reduce the impact of aeration on the global energy balance. However, mass transfer limitations derived from poor flow distribution must be tackled to take advantage of this technology. In this work, in order to improve mass transfer between biofilm and bulk water, a specific configuration was developed and studied at laboratory scale, aimed at compactness, energy efficiency and high nitrification rates. Nitrification rates were higher in the innovative configuration than in the conventional one, achieving a Volumetric Nitrification Rate (VNR) as high as 575.84-g NH4-N m-8722;3 d-8722;1, which is comparable with confirmed technologies. Regarding energy consumption due to aeration, a reduction of 83.7% was reached in comparison with aeration through diffusers with the same Oxygen Transfer Efficiency (OTE). These results highlight the importance of hydrodynamic conditions and the membranes configuration on treatment performance. The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness partiallyfunded this research through the Network of Excellence Red-NOVEDAR (CTQ2016-81979-REDC) and the project PBi2(CTM2012e36227), the latter being co-financed by the EuropeanRegional Development Fund (FEDER)
