The intermediate evolution phase in case of truncated selection

Using methods of statistical physics, we present rigorous theoretical calculations of Eigen's quasispecies theory with the truncated fitness landscape which dramatically limits the available sequence space of a reproducing quasispecies. Depending on the mutation rates, we observe three phases, a selective one, an intermediate one with some residual order and a completely randomized phase. Our results are applicable for the general case of fitness landscape.Comment: 8 page

Jugendarbeit Wallisellen : Bestandessichtung, Analyse und Empfehlungen - Schlussbericht

Das Ressort Gesellschaft der Gemeinde Wallisellen, Kanton Zürich wollte auf der Basis einer externen Bestandessichtung und Analyse sowie eines darauf aufbauenden Konzeptrahmens und entsprechenden Empfehlungen die Weiterentwicklung der Jugendarbeit Wallisellen planen. Die ZHAW, Departement Soziale Arbeit wurde beauftragt, zwischen Dezember 2012 und Mai 2013 die Sichtung und Analyse vorzunehmen und in Berichtsform Konzeptrahmen und Empfehlungen aufzuzeigen. Der ZHAW stand dafür eine ausführliche Bestandesdokumentation – erstellt von der Abteilung Gesellschaft Wallisellen – zur Verfügung. Ergänzend dazu wurden von der ZHAW Interviews mit zehn Schlüsselpersonen der Jugendarbeit Wallisellen geführt. Auf dieser Datenbasis erstellte sie den vorliegenden Bericht.

Modeling the effect of intercalators on the high-force stretching behavior of DNA

DNA is structurally and mechanically altered by the binding of intercalator molecules. Intercalation strongly affects the force-extension behavior of DNA, in particular the overstretching transition. We present a statistical model that captures all relevant findings of recent force-extension experiments. Two predictions from our model are presented. The first suggests the existence of a novel hyper-stretching regime in the presence of intercalators and the second, a linear dependence of the overstretching force on intercalator concentration, is verified by re-analyzing available experimental data. Our model pins down the physical principles that govern intercalated DNA mechanics, providing a predictive understanding of its limitations and possibilities.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Disciplining Europe – The Production of Economic Delinquency

The main goal of the following article is to offer a Foucaultian reading of the economic governance structure of the European Union after the reforms passed and implemented over the last six years. The starting point is a reconstruction of Foucault’s analytical framework to scrutinize disciplinary power as well as the respective apparatuses and how this framework has been integrated into the more encompassing governmentality perspective. In the second section I provide a brief survey of the strategic terrain of the European Union as a site of multi-level governance that poses unique challenges from a governing perspective. The following sections are structured according to some key characteristics of disciplinary/governmental power arrangements (visibilization, norm(aliz)ation, prevention, normalizing judgement) which I try to identify in the context of the European Semester, the Six-Pack and the Macroeconomic Imbalance Procedure as elements of a broader disciplinary framework. The final section draws on Foucault’s famous point about the ‘productive failure’ of the prison as a disciplinary apparatus that ends up serving ends and purposes quite distinct from the ones officially declared and suggests that we should also consider the European regime of economic discipline and surveillance as one, which is ‘failing forward’, creating opportunity structures to pursue political projects that may differ markedly from those officially stated
