    Book of Abstracts of CEB Annual Meeting 2017[Excerpt] The unique properties of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP), such as high surface area, magnetic, sorption and catalytic characteristics, make them very versatile for many applications in different areas including environmental remediation, as catalysts, adsorbents, immobilising agents for microorganisms and enzymes, and as supports for biofilm growth and water disinfectants. In order to improve their stability and to introduce additional surface properties and functionalities, MNP can be coated with carbon materials (CM) due to their chemical stability, biocompatibility and possibility of tailoring their textural and surface chemical properties for specific applications [1]. We have previously proved that various CM, including activated carbon, carbon xerogels and carbon nanotubes (CNT), can be used as redox mediators (RM) in anaerobic biotransformation, accelerating the electron transfer and, consequently, the reduction rates of organic compounds [1,2]. The combination of CM with MNP offers the possibility of creating magnetic carbon composites with synergistic properties: the adsorptive and catalytic properties of both and the magnetic character of MNP, improving the material performance and rendering it easier to be retained and recovered, by applying a magnetic field.     Riding the (brain) waves! Using neural oscillations to inform bilingualism research

    The study of the brains’ oscillatory activity has been a standard technique to gain insights into human neurocognition for a relatively long time. However, as a complementary analysis to ERPs, only very recently has it been utilized to study bilingualism and its neural underpinnings. Here, we provide a theoretical and methodological starter for scientists in the (psycho)linguistics and neurocognition of bilingualism field(s) to understand the bases and applications of this analytical tool. Towards this goal, we provide a description of the characteristics of the human neural (and its oscillatory) signal, followed by an in-depth description of various types of EEG oscillatory analyses, supplemented by figures and relevant examples. We then utilize the scant, yet emergent, literature on neural oscillations and bilingualism to highlight the potential of how analyzing neural oscillations can advance our understanding of the (psycho)linguistic and neurocognitive understanding of bilingualism

    Estudo das características de avanço e infiltração da água em sulcos, em um Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro alico, com aplicação de água contínua e intermitente.

    Conduziu-se uma pesquisa com a finalidade de estudar as caracteristicas de avanco e infiltracao da agua em sulcos com aplicacao de agua continua e intermitente. Foram testadas as vazoes de 0,4, 0,8 e 1,2 1.s-1 e tempos ciclicos de 20, 40 e 60 min com taxa ciclica de 0,5. A velocidade de avanco aumentou, para a vazao de 0,4 1.s-1, nos tres tempos ciclicos, em relacao ao escoamento continuo, e para a vazao de 0,8 1.s-1, nos tempos ciclicos de 40 e 60 min. Entretanto, nao houve diferenca entre os tempos de avanco com irrigacao continua e intermitente para a vazao de 1,2 1.s-1. Os efeitos da irrigacao intermitente foram mais acentuados durante a primeira irrigacao. Os volumes de agua aplicada para conclusao do avanco foram menores no escoamento intermitente com vazao de 0,8 1.s-1 e tempos ciclicos de 40 e 60 min

    Conduziu-se uma pesquisa para avaliar as caracteristicas de avanco e infiltracao de agua em sulcos, num Latossolo Vermelho Escuro alico, utilizando-se irrigacao continua e intermitente.     Long-term memory in financial prices: evidence from the Dutch stock market returns

    Prepared for presentation at the Portuguese Finance Network International Conference 2014, Vilamoura, Portugal, June 18-20The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the discussion of long-term memory, focusing on the behavior of the main Dutch stock index.The analysis of the general characteristics of temporal frequency reveals that daily returns are non-ergodic, non-stationary and non-independent. Consequently, we have employed the rescaled-range analysis (R/S) and the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), under the fractional Brownian motion approach, and found slight evidence of long-term persistence. This suggests that this market is more prone to predictability ("Joseph effect"), but also trends that may be unexpectedly disrupted by discontinuities ("Noah effect"). Although the evidence of fractal dynamics has weak support, refutes the hypothesis of random walk with i.i.d. increments. This implies that the use of statistical limit arguments to determine conventional financial statistics, as used in the Capital Asset Pricing Model and option valuation models, is scientifically incorrect. Furthermore, a more localized (in time) study to identify the evolution of the degree of long-term memory over time showed a change in the characteristic index from persistent to anti-persistent, more evident after 2010. This suggests that the AEX market does not correspond to Efficient Market Hypotheis in strictly sense of Fama (1970), although it has progressed closer to this theoretical ideal during the worsening of the current international financial crisis

    PREPARATION AND EVALUATION OF TUSCAN SAUSAGE OF CHICKEN MEAT WITH THE ADDITION OF QUINOA

    The meat has exceptional organoleptic characteristics associated with its nutritional value, convert it into a food of animal origin most valued by consumers.  Due to the lack of time to eat properly, people started to consume more frequently, manufactured products, fried foods, sweets and sandwiches, disregarding the negative factors to health.  Aiming at the need to prepare food with low cholesterol levels, this study aimed to prepare and study the sensory acceptance of Tuscan sausage of chicken meat with the addition of quinoa. The practice of preparing formulations followed the standard procedure for the preparation of sausage from Tuscany using gut collagen and 3.0 % of quinoa. The samples were analyzed for protein (g 100g-1), fat (g100g-1), moisture content (g 100g-1), caloric value (kcal/g) and sensory analyses. The results of microbiological and physicochemical were within normal limits required by law, qualifying products made fit for human consumption.  A sensory acceptance test was carried out with 30 untrained panelists. The marks awarded by the panelists for the color, juiciness, odor flavor, texture and overall acceptance attributes were between 4 (Moderately Good) and 5 (Very Good), indicating that formulations are within the zone of acceptance. The marks awarded by the judges for the purchase of attitude corresponds to "Certainly Buy", showing that this product can be marketed

    Ciprofloxacin removal catalysed by conductive carbon materials

    Current wastewater treatment technologies are not effective in the removal of pharmaceuticals. In anaerobic bioreactors, the electrons produced during the oxidation of organic matter can potentially be used for the biological reduction of pharmaceuticals. However, these reactions occur generally at a slow rate, due to electron transfer limitations, and might be accelerated through redox mediators (RM). Carbon nanomaterials (CM) have been effective RM in the biological reduction of other pollutants. For instance, CNT@2%Fe were found to increase 76-fold the biological reduction of Acid Orange 10. The magnetic properties of those composites allow their easier recover after the process by using a magnetic field. In this study, CNT and CNT@2%Fe were studied in the anaerobic removal of Ciprofloxacin (CIP). Furthermore, the potential contribution of adsorption and biodegradation processes for CIP removal was assessed. Toxicity assessment is highly important as it is desired that the products formed after the process are not more toxic than the initial compound. Moreover, the evaluation of the possible contribution of nanomaterials used in the process for the final toxic effect of threated solution, is crucial.     Comparing small-footprint lidar and forest inventory data for single strata biomass estimation: a case study over a multi-layered mediterranean forest

    Current methods for accurately estimating vegetation biomass with remote sensing data require extensive, representative and time consuming field measurements to calibrate the sensor signal. In addition, such techniques focus on the topmost vegetation canopy and thus they are of little use over multi-layered forest ecosystems where the underneath strata hold considerable amounts of biomass. This work is the first attempt to estimate biomass by remote sensing without the need for massive in situ measurements. Indeed, we use small-footprint airborne laser scanning (ALS) data to derive key forest metrics, which are used in allometric equations that were originally established to assess biomass using field measurements. Field- and ALS-derived biomass estimates are compared over 40 plots of a multi-layered Mediterranean forest. Linear regression models explain up to 99% of the variability associated with surface vegetation, understory, and overstory biomass
