The reconstruction of extensive defects on the face caused by infections is a challenge for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Platelet and leukocyte-rich fibrin (L-PRF) is an excellent option for rehabilitative treatment, as it contains molecular and cellular elements that induce repair, being a therapeutic biomaterial with high potential for soft tissue regeneration. This article presents the clinical case of the patient C.T.A.S., female, 21 years old, who reported multiple tooth extractions, with an evolution of 30 days of volume increase and intense algesia in the left bucal space. Diagnosing necrotizing fasciitis, the patient underwent IV antibiotic therapy and surgery to drain and debride the lesion. Postoperatively, therapy with platelet- and leukocyte-rich fibrin was initiated for tissue regeneration in the area affected by fasciitis. As an adjuvant to L-PRF membranes, low-level laser therapy and hyperbaric oxygenation sessions were performed. When using L-PRF to resolve this case, a satisfactory result was observed regarding the aesthetic-functional repair. In addition to having the advantage of being cost-effective, and having a simple protocol to be performed, L-PRF proved to be effective in promoting tissue regeneration

Perception of olive oils sensory defects using a potentiometric taste device

The capability of perceiving olive oils sensory defects and intensities plays a key role on olive oils quality grade classification since olive oils can only be classified as extra-virgin if no defect can be perceived by a human trained sensory panel. Otherwise, olive oils may be classified as virgin or lampante depending on the median intensity of the defect predominantly perceived and on the physicochemical levels. However, sensory analysis is time-consuming and requires an official sensory panel, which can only evaluate a low number of samples per day. In this work, the potential use of an electronic tongue as a taste sensor device to identify the defect predominantly perceived in olive oils was evaluated. The potentiometric profiles recorded showed that intra- and inter-day signal drifts could be neglected (i.e., relative standard deviations lower than 25%), being not statistically significant the effect of the analysis day on the overall recorded E-tongue sensor fingerprints (P-value=0.5715, for multivariate analysis of variance using Pillai's trace test), which significantly differ according to the olive oils sensory defect (P-value=0.0084, for multivariate analysis of variance using Pillai's trace test). Thus, a linear discriminant model based on 19 potentiometric signal sensors, selected by the simulated annealing algorithm, could be established to correctly predict the olive oil main sensory defect (fusty, rancid, wet-wood or winey-vinegary) with average sensitivity of 75±3% and specificity of 73±4% (repeated K-fold cross-validation variant: 4 folds×10 repeats). Similarly, a linear discriminant model, based on 24 selected sensors, correctly classified 92±3% of the olive oils as virgin or lampante, being an average specificity of 93±3% achieved. The overall satisfactory predictive performances strengthen the feasibility of the developed taste sensor device as a complementary methodology for olive oils defects analysis and subsequent quality grade classification. Furthermore, the capability of identifying the type of sensory defect of an olive oil may allow establishing helpful insights regarding bad practices of olives or olive oils production, harvesting, transport and storage. This work was financially supported by Project POCI-01–0145FEDER-006984 – Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM, Project UID/QUI/ 00616/2013 – CQ-VR, and UID/AGR/00690/2013 – CIMO all funded by FEDER - Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional through COMPETE2020 - Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI) – and by national funds through FCT Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal.

In this work, covalently linked hybrid porphyrin–nanodiamonds were prepared via ipso nitro substitution reaction and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fluorescence spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy (IR) and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The amine-functionalized nanodiamonds (ND@NH2 ) and 2-nitro-5,10,15,20-tetra(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)porphyrin covalently linked to nanodiamonds (ND@βNH-TPPpCF3 ) were tested using Allium cepa as a plant model, and showed neither phytotoxicity nor cytotoxicity. The hybrid nanodiamond–copper(II)–porphyrin material ND@βNH-TPPpCF3-Cu(II) was also evaluated as a reusable catalyst in cyclohexene allylic oxidation, and displayed a remarkable turnover number (TON) value of ≈265,000, using O2 as green oxidant, in the total absence of sacrificial additives, which is the highest activity ever reported for said allylic oxidation. Additionally, ND@βNH-TPPpCF3-Cu(II) could be easily separated from the reaction mixture by centrifugation, and reused in three consecutive catalytic cycles without major loss of activity.publishersversionpublishe

Nanoscience and nanobiotechnology have aroused great academic and technological interest. Works relating biomaterials at the nanoscale can reach new biotechnologies and help in the development and use of tools for bioimage and diagnosis applications. In this work we demonstrated the advantages of magic sized quantum dots as luminescent markers and probes to bioimage applications. The visualization of MSQDs bioconjugated with biological probes in cells were performed at periods greater than 2 h, and visualization with no commercial dye would not be possible. Therefore, we demonstrated that theses biocompatible nanocrystals are luminescent markers and probes to diagnosis

The aim was to identify the medical conduct against snakebites in the literature. This is a descriptive study of a critical-reflexive nature, with a qualitative approach. Three categories were established for analysis, such as: Ophidian accidents, Medical conducts and Permanent education. It was noted the importance of recognizing snakes and knowledge of clinical management in the establishment of an appropriate medical conduct and that, for this, it is necessary for the professional to have a continuing education in their work environment. It is concluded that their accidents constitute a public health problem, with the highest number of accidents in rural areas, in patients of economically active age; regarding the anatomical part, the lower limbs were the most affected; Regarding seasonality, the months from October to December were more frequent and most patients sought immediate help, up to 3 hours after the accident. Among the accidents, the most frequent local manifestations were pain and edema. Most cases were classified as mild and the number of deaths extremely low. The results showed a lack in the taxonomic description and the scarcity of scientific materials that addressed the medical conduct to be taken in the face of accidents with snakes.

This work evaluated the fermentation pattern of sorghum silage hybrid BR 601 with and without additives. At ensiling time, silages were enriched with the additives, adopting the following treatments: silages without additive (control), with 0.5% urea, 0.5% limestone, 0.5% urea plus limestone and bacterial inoculant. The materials were stored into PVC silos, opened after 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 28 and 56 days of ensiling. Alterations were determined in dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), hemicellulose, cellulose, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and lignin contents and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). A completely randomized experimental design was used, in a 5 x 7 factorial scheme, and the means were compared by the SNK test at 5% probability. The silage enriched with urea plus limestone showed highest loss of DM. No difference was observed between silage with additives and control regarding NDF, hemicellulose, cellulose and DMIVD. The additives promoted changes in the ADF and lignin contents

Effect of Metabolic Syndrome on Parkinson’s Disease: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Evidence shows that metabolic syndrome (MS) is associated with a greater risk of developing Parkinson’s disease (PD) because of the increase in oxidative stress levels along with other factors such as neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. However, because some studies have reported that MS is associated with a lower risk of PD, the relationship between MS and PD should be investigated. This study aimed to investigate the effect of MS on PD. Two authors searched five electronic databases, namely, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Science Direct, for relevant articles between September and October 2020. After screening the title and abstract of all articles, 34 articles were selected for full-text review. Finally, 11 articles meeting the eligibility criteria were included in the study. The quality of articles was critically evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute. Overall, we evaluated data from 23,586,349 individuals (including healthy individuals, with MS and PD) aged 30 years or more. In cohort studies, the follow-up period varied between 2 and 30 years. MS contributed considerably to the increase in the incidence of PD. In addition, obesity, a component of MS, alone can increase the probability of developing neurodegenerative diseases. However, despite few studies on MS and PD, changes in cognitive function and more rapid progression of PD disease has been documented in patients with MS using methods commonly used in research
