Managing Water in Agriculture through Remote Sensing Applications
The climatic factors and their variability, both spatial and temporal, linked to precipita-tion decreasing and irregular distribution, due to climatic changes, have been gathering a higher weight in the definition of water management policies. These policies have important implications on agriculture. Using new technologies that allow a better use of water requires institutional changes in major areas. The first point is the need for base information with an adequate spatial and temporal resolution. The work we have done includes itself in the water efficient and sustained use, allowing the improvement of irrigation systems and it’s the result of a jointly effort of several teams based on an international project. The PLEIADES Project - Participatory multi-Level EO-assisted tools for Irrigation water management: and Agricultural Decision - Support, falls in the 6th Framework Programme, Priority 6 - Sustainable Development, Global Change and Ecosystems – CEC - Research Directorate-General-Integrating and Strengthening the European Research Area. The Portuguese working area was the Caia irrigation area, a subsystem of Guadiana basin, located in the southeast of Portugal, near the border with Spain. The system praised by PLEIADES stands mainly over FAO normative, about culture water needs and the calculation of cultural coefficient (Kc) in a simple way, directly from remote sensing data. For that we simply use radiometric pa-rameters derived from visible and infrared bands.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A critical analysis of research methods and experimental models to study the load capacity and clinical behaviour of the root filled teeth
The prognosis of root-filled teeth depends not only on a successful root canal treatment but also on the restorative prognosis. This critical review discusses the advantages and limitations of various methodologies used to assess the load capacity or clinical survivability of root-filled teeth and restorations. These methods include static loading, cyclic loading, finite element analysis and randomized clinical trials. In vitro research is valuable for preclinical screening of new dental materials or restorative modalities. It also can assist investigators or industry to decide whether further clinical trials are justified. It is important that these models present high precision and accuracy, be reproducible, and present adequate outcomes. Although in vitro models can reduce confounding by controlling important variables, the lack of clinical validation (accuracy) is a downside that has not been properly addressed. Most importantly, many in vitro studies did not explore the mechanisms of failure and their results are limited to rank different materials or treatment modalities according to the maximum load capacity. An extensive number of randomized clinical trials have also been published in the last years. These trials have provided valuable insight on the survivability of the root-filled tooth answering numerous clinical questions. However, trials can also be affected by the selected outcome and by intrinsic and extrinsic biases. For example, selection bias, loss to follow-up and confounding. In the clinical scenario, hypothesis-based studies are preferred over observational and retrospective studies. It is recommended that hypothesis-based studies minimize error and bias during the design phase.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Remote Sensing and GIS for water district management: the Caia network case study
The development of irrigation technologies related with the different areas covered
by irrigated crops in Portugal as well as in the Southern countries of the EU taking into account the
relative importance of Agriculture, in what concerns the integration, Water Framework directive
and the Eco-compatibility principles requires the capability for the management of big amount of
spatial data, a detailed knowledge of their structure and links, the improvement and development
of GIS skills at Local, Regional or National scale, integrating remote sensing data on different
systems, allowing a better water use, allowing a better knowledge of spatial and temporal distribution
of land Use, Soil Types, Crop Water requirements, water distribution network and a more rational
management of the available water resource. The application of the GIS to the areas covered by the
different Water Districts Management Boards, spread all over the country, gives the possibility for
a better use of water for agriculture, on the frame of programs like the EU INTERREG II C

Contudo, a reduzida
Systems that require heat energy storage are required in an
increasing number of applications, from sanitary hot water
production systems to renewable energy conversation systems,
with higher or lower complexity and different temperatures. The use
of phase change materials (PCM) for the thermal energy storage is
one way to enhance the heat storage by taking advantage of their
latent heat, that is, as a rule higher than the sensitive heat capacity.
Nevertheless, the low thermal conductivity of some PCM, namely
paraffins and their derivatives, brings some challenges to their
integration in systems and procedures that require lower time
constants. It is in this context that arises this dissertation, in which
is proposed to study the energy storage utilizing this materials
integrated in exchange systems intended to low temperature
thermal energy harnessing, to pre-heat the water that charges the
sanitary hot water systems tanks.
In order to study the behaviour of different system configurations
resorted to heat exchange flows computational analysis, by utilizing
the commercial software ANSYS (Fluent). With the objective of
enhance the properties of phase change materials, it was mixed to
the paraffin a steel mesh that worked as a three-dimensional
porous fin. Was able to meet the objectives of analysing, for
different cases, which paraffin and steel mesh combination
optimize the material properties, always enhancing the thermal
conductivity and the heat transfer process, and the amount of water
provided in order to some criteria referring the discharge process
stopping point, regardless of the selected one there is a significant
improvement when the steel mesh is utilized.
Mispronunciation Detection in Children's Reading of Sentences
This work proposes an approach to automatically parse children’s reading of sentences by detecting word pronunciations and extra content, and to classify words as correctly or incorrectly pronounced. This approach can be directly helpful for automatic assessment of reading level or for automatic reading tutors, where a correct reading must be identified. We propose a first segmentation stage to locate candidate word pronunciations based on allowing repetitions and false starts of a word’s syllables. A decoding grammar based solely on syllables allows silence to appear during a word pronunciation. At a second stage, word candidates are classified as mispronounced or not. The feature that best classifies mispronunciations is found to be the log-likelihood ratio between a free phone loop and a word spotting model in the very close vicinity of the candidate segmentation. Additional features are combined in multi-feature models to further improve classification, including: normalizations of the log-likelihood ratio, derivations from phone likelihoods, and Levenshtein distances between the correct pronunciation and recognized phonemes through two phoneme recognition approaches. Results show that most extra events were detected (close to 2% word error rate achieved) and that using automatic segmentation for mispronunciation classification approaches the performance of manual segmentation. Although the log-likelihood ratio from a spotting approach is already a good metric to classify word pronunciations, the combination of additional features provides a relative reduction of the miss rate of 18% (from 34.03% to 27.79% using manual segmentation and from 35.58% to 29.35% using automatic segmentation, at constant 5% false alarm rate).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
