Quasimodo and the Spiritualization of Cruelty, Sabaâs Uncanny Shortcuts, Montaleâs Grotesque Imaginary: Complex Genealogies of Italian Poetry on the Jewish Genocide
The memory of anti-Jewish persecution intersected the work of prominent authors in Italian twentieth century poetry, often following oblique and unexpected trajectories that touch authors such as Montale, Sereni, Fortini, Pasolini, Saba, Levi, Quasimodo. This essay intends to probe a genealogical juncture in this poetic history, bringing into purview a series of poliperspectival models of poetic writing about the Shoah elaborated by Salvatore Quasimodo, Umberto Saba and Eugenio Montale in the early postwar years. If Quasimodoâs poesia civilepaved the way to a literary monumentalization of memory, such poetic configuration ultimately might be seen to hinge on what Friedrich Nietzsche critically termed a âspiritualization of cruelty.â Thus it was progressively identified as a potential anti-model for Italian poetry dealing with the memory of the persecution â as a reading of Montaleâs treatment of this theme reveals. On the other hand, Saba condesned his afterthoughts about the âcannibalismâ of racial persecution in Scorciatoie e raccontini(Shortcuts and Very Short Stories): a book of poĂšmes en prosethat possesses âthe accent of poetry and the rigor of aphorism.â These uncanny and ironical shortcuts raise corrosive doubts about the value attached to a purported monumental memory of the Shoah and bring to attention the existence of genealogical complexity in Italian poetic writing about the Jewish genocide that calls for adequate critical recognition
Bound states and entanglement generation in waveguide quantum electrodynamics
We investigate the behavior of two quantum emitters (two-level atoms) embedded in a linear waveguide, in a quasi-one-dimensional configuration. Since the atoms can emit, absorb and reflect radiation, the pair can spontaneously relax towards an entangled bound state, under conditions in which a single atom would instead decay. We analyze the properties of these bound states, which occur for resonant values of the interatomic distance, and discuss their relevance with respect to entanglement generation. The stability of such states close to the resonance is studied, as well as the properties of non resonant bound states, whose energy is below the threshold for photon propagation
In GH-treated girls with Turner syndrome height prognosis may sometimes exceed target height: a case report
A 5-years-old girl was diagnosed with Turner syndrome (TS) during a diagnostic work-up for short stature and dysmorphic features. Chromosome analysis revealed rare X-chromosomal abnormalities 46 Xt (13:X) (p12:q24). GH therapy was started at the age of 5.5 years, and continued for 7 years with a fixed dose of 0.33 mg/kg/week, until adult height (AH) achievement. Six-monthly assessment of height standard deviation score and height velocity was performed under therapy, evaluating a prepubertal height gain of 31.7 cm and pubertal height gain of 20 cm. She achieved an AH of 159.3 cm, better than her target height (156.8 cm). In addition, she underwent spontaneous puberty at the age of 9.6 years, completed with menarche at 11.6 years and followed by regular menstrual cycles. During GH treatment, IGF-1, insulin and glucose blood levels remained within a normal range. The early onset of GH therapy may have allowed such a successful height outcome, with the achievement of full stature recovery during childhood and puberty in this TS case. The rare karyotype of our patient may also positively influenced her height final result
ampia e frastagliata, sono state individuate tre principali tipologie
discorsive, o forme testuali, attraverso cui gli autori hanno dato
voce alle proprie idee sulla letteratura. A tali tipologie discorsive
negoziabili
Global incidence and prevalence of differentiated thyroid cancer in childhood: systematic review and meta-analysis
ObjectiveDifferentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is rare in childhood and adolescence although it represents the most frequent endocrine malignancy in this population. DTC includes both papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC). Most pediatric DTCs are PTCs, while FTCs are rare. To date, no systematic reviews on the global epidemiology of pediatric and adolescent DTC have been published. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to estimate the overall incidence and prevalence of DTCs in patients aged 0â19 years.MethodsThe systematic research was conducted from January 2000 to December 2021 through MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases. Two separate meta-analyses were performed for PTC and FTC.ResultsAfter the selection phase, a total of 15 studies (3,332 screened) met the inclusion criteria and are reported in the present systematic review. Five studies were conducted in Europe, five in North America, two in South America, one in Asia, one reported data for 49 countries and territories across the five continents, and one from both the USA and Africa. Most of the studies (n = 14) reported data obtained from national registries, and only one provided information collected from hospital medical records. Beyond the actual trend over time, our study reported a pooled global incidence rate (IR) of PTC and FTC in the pediatric age of 0.46 (95% CI: 0.33â0.59) and 0.07 (95% CI: 0.02â0.12) per 100,000 person-years, respectively. The highest IRs were recorded among Caucasian girls, and the lowest in black or other races/ethnicities.ConclusionOur data confirm that DTC in the pediatric population is a rare condition. The pooled IRs of the studies included in this meta-analysis are ~0.5 for PTC, which is the most common histological type when both genders and all age groups are considered. The implementation of a prospective international registry on pediatric DTC, as part of the wider European Registries for Rare Endocrine Conditions, has been recently proposed. In addition to providing relevant information on the clinical behavior of this rare disease, standardization of data collection will be pivotal to fill current gaps and allow an accurate estimation of the real incidence and risk factors of DTC
Search for heavy neutral lepton production in K+ decays
A search for heavy neutral lepton production in K + decays using a data sample collected with a minimum
bias trigger by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2015 is reported. Upper limits at the 10â7 to 10â6 level
are established on the elements of the extended neutrino mixing matrix |Ue4|
2 and |UΌ4|
2 for heavy
neutral lepton mass in the ranges 170â448 MeV/c2 and 250â373 MeV/c2, respectively. This improves on
the previous limits from HNL production searches over the whole mass range considered for |Ue4|2 and
above 300 MeV/c2 for |UΌ4|2
Downstream Services for Rice Crop Monitoring in Europe: From Regional to Local Scale
The ERMES agromonitoring system for rice cultivations integrates EO data at different resolutions, crop models, and user-provided in situ data in a unified system, which drives two operational downstream services for rice monitoring. The first is aimed at providing information concerning the behavior of the current season at regional/rice district scale, while the second is dedicated to provide farmers with field-scale data useful to support more efficient and environmentally friendly crop practices. In this contribution, we describe the main characteristics of the system, in terms of overall architecture, technological solutions adopted, characteristics of the developed products, and functionalities provided to end users. Peculiarities of the system reside in its ability to cope with the needs of different stakeholders within a common platform, and in a tight integration between EO data processing and information retrieval, crop modeling, in situ data collection, and information dissemination. The ERMES system has been operationally tested in three European rice-producing countries (Italy, Spain, and Greece) during growing seasons 2015 and 2016, providing a great amount of near-real-time information concerning rice crops. Highlights of significant results are provided, with particular focus on real-world applications of ERMES products and services. Although developed with focus on European rice cultivations, solutions implemented in the ERMES system can be, and are already being, adapted to other crops and/or areas of the world, thus making it a valuable testing bed for the development of advanced, integrated agricultural monitoring systems
