Flowering of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica in NW Mediterranean: is there a link with solar activity?
Time series on the leaf biometry and rhizome production of the endemic Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile were investigated in a meadow of the Ligurian Sea (NW Mediterranean) in order to assess changes in the plant growth during a massive flowering event occurred in 2003, in coincidence with the warmest summer temperatures recorded in the last centuries. P. oceanica exhibited the highest values of leaf surface area during the flowering year and the highest values of rhizome production in the previous year. The years immediately following the flowering event were characterized by a decrease in both parameters. Comparison of the years of massive flowering events reported in the literature at the whole Mediterranean-wide spatial scale with the historical series (spanning the last 50 years) of the air temperature and of the sunspot number suggested that intense solar activity, and not warmer temperature per se, was likely to be the main trigger of massive flowering events in Posidonia oceanica
Micropulse Transscleral Cyclophotocoagulation: A Hypothesis for the Ideal Parameters
MicroPulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (IRIDEX Corp., Mountain View, CA) is a novel technique that uses repetitive micropulses of active diode laser (On cycles) interspersed with resting intervals (Off cycles). It has been proposed that the OFF cycles allow thermal dissipation and, therefore, reduce collateral damage. The literature suggests that Micropulse has a better safety profile compared to traditional continuous-wave cyclophotocoagulation. However, because it is a relatively new technique, there are no clear guidelines stating the ideal laser parameters that would allow the best balance between high and sustained effectiveness with minimal side effects. This research reviewed the literature to approximate ideal parameters for single-session treatment. To simplify the comparison between studies, this study used Joules (J) as a way to standardize the energy levels employed. The reviewed clinical publications allowed reduction of these parameters to a range between 112 and 150 J of total energy, which allows a moderate IOP lowering effect of around 30% with few/no complications. An additional narrowing of the parameters was achieved after analyzing recently published experimental data. These data suggest a different mechanism of action for the Micropulse, similar to that of the pilocarpine. This effect was maximum at 150 J. Since clinical studies show few or no complications, even at those energy levels, it could be hypothesized that the ideal parameters can be located at a point closer to 150 J. This data also leads to the concept of dosimetry; the capacity to dose mTSCPC treatment based on desired IOP lowering effect and risk exposure. Further prospective studies are needed to test the proposed evidence-based hypothesis
Abrupt change in a Subtidal Rocky Reef community coincided with a rapid acceleration of Sea Water Warming
Seawater warming is impacting marine ecosystems, but proper evaluation of change requires the availability of long-term biological data series. Mesco Reef (Ligurian Sea, Italy) offers one of the longest Mediterranean data series on sessile epibenthic communities, based on underwater photographic surveys. Photographs taken in four stations between 20 m and 40 m depth allowed calculating the percent cover of conspicuous species in 1961, 1990, 1996, 2008, and 2017. Multivariate analysis evidenced an abrupt compositional change between 1990 and 1996. A parallel change was observed in Ligurian Sea temperatures. Two invasive macroalgae (Caulerpa cylindracea and Womersleyella setacea) became dominant after 1996. Community diversity was low in 1961 to 1996, rapidly increased between 1996 and 2008, and exhibited distinctly higher values in 2008-2017. A novel community emerged from the climate shift of the 1990s, with many once characteristic species lost, reduced complexity, biotic homogenization, greater diversity and domination by aliens. Only continued monitoring will help envisage the possibility for a reversal of the present phase shift or for further transformations driven by global change

Ecological change, sliding baselines and the importance of historical data: Lessons from combing observational and quantitative data on a temperate reef over 70 years
Understanding the effects of environmental change on ecosystems requires the identification of baselines that may act as reference conditions. However, the continuous change of these references challenges our ability to define the true natural status of ecosystems. The so-called sliding baseline syndrome can be overcome through the analysis of quantitative time series, which are, however, extremely rare. Here we show how combining historical quantitative data with descriptive 'naturalistic' information arranged in a chronological chain allows highlighting long-term trends and can be used to inform present conservation schemes.We analysed the long-term change of a coralligenous reef, a marine habitat endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. The coralligenous assemblages of Mesco Reef (Ligurian Sea, NW Mediterranean) have been studied, although discontinuously, since 1937 thus making available both detailed descriptive information and scanty quantitative data: while the former was useful to understand the natural history of the ecosystem, the analysis of the latter was of paramount importance to provide a formal measure of change over time. Epibenthic assemblages remained comparatively stable until the 1990s, when species replacement, invasion by alien algae, and biotic homogenisation occurred within few years, leading to a new and completely different ecosystem state. The shift experienced by the coralligenous assemblages of Mesco Reef was probably induced by a combination of seawater warming and local human pressures, the latter mainly resulting in increased water turbidity; in turn, cumulative stress may have favoured the establishment of alien species. This study showed that the combined analysis of quantitative and descriptive historical data represent a precious knowledge to understand ecosystem trends over time and provide help to identify baselines for ecological management
Environmental drivers of distribution and reef development of the Mediterranean coral Cladocora caespitosa
Cladocora caespitosa is the only Mediterranean scleractinian similar to tropical reef-building corals. While this species is part of the recent fossil history of the Mediterranean Sea, it is currently considered endangered due to its decline during the last decades. Environmental factors affecting the distribution and persistence of extensive bank reefs of this endemic species across its whole geographic range are poorly understood. In this study, we examined the environmental response of C. caespitosa and its main types of assemblages using ecological niche modeling and ordination analysis. We also predicted other suitable areas for the occurrence of the species and assessed the conservation effectiveness of Mediterranean marine protected areas (MPAs) for this coral. We found that phosphate concentration and wave height were factors affecting both the occurrence of this versatile species and the distribution of its extensive bioconstructions in the Mediterranean Sea. A set of factors (diffuse attenuation coefficient, calcite and nitrate concentrations, mean wave height, sea surface temperature, and shape of the coast) likely act as environmental barriers preventing the species from expansion to the Atlantic Ocean and the Black Sea. Uncertainties in our large-scale statistical results and departures from previous physiological and ecological studies are also discussed under an integrative perspective. This study reveals that Mediterranean MPAs encompass eight of the ten banks and 16 of the 21 beds of C. caespitosa. Consequences of the marine climate and ecosystem shift of the 1980-90s on the Ligurian Sea biodiversity (NW Mediterranean Sea)
A rapid temperature increase in the 1980-90s has been accompanied by dramatic and unprecedented changes in the biota and communities of the Ligurian Sea. This review uses existing historical series (a few of which have been purposely updated) to assess extent and consequences of such changes. A number of warm-water species, previously absent or occasional in the comparatively cold Ligurian Sea, has recently established thanks to warmer winters. Occurrence among them of invasive alien species is causing concern because of their capacity of outcompeting autochthonous species. Summer heatwaves, on the other hand, caused mass mortalities in marine organisms, some of which found refuge at depth. New marine diseases appeared, as well as other dysfunctions such as the formation of mucilage aggregates that suffocated and entangled benthic organisms. Human pressures have combined with climate change to cause phase shifts (i.e., abrupt variations in species composition and community structure) in different habitats, such as the pelagic environment, seagrass meadows, rocky reefs, and marine caves. These phase shifts implied biotic homogenization, reduction of diversity, and dominance by invasive aliens, and may be detrimental to the resilience of Ligurian Sea ecosystems. Another phase of rapid warming has possibly started in the 2010s and there are clues pointing to a further series of biological changes, but data are too scarce to date for proper assessment. Only well addressed long-term studies will help understanding the future dynamics of Ligurian Sea ecosystems and their possibilities of recovery
Iron deficiency anemia in infancy exerts long-term effects on the tibialis anterior motor activity during sleep in childhood
Objectives: To explore the eventual connection between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in infancy and altered leg movements during sleep in a 10-year follow-up study in children who did or did not have IDA in infancy. Subjects and methods: Polysomnographic studies were performed in 32 10-year-old children (13 females and 19 males) who had IDA in infancy and 26 peers (10 females and 16 males) who were nonanemic controls. The time structure of their polysomnographically recorded leg movements (LM) was analyzed by means of an approach particularly able to consider their quantity, periodicity, and distribution during the night. Results: All LM indexes and those related to periodic LM during sleep (PLMS) were slightly higher in the former IDA group than in the control group, but not always significant. The Periodicity index during NREM sleep was higher and was reflected by a small but significant increase in PLMS separated by 10–50 s intervals. PLMS index tended to be higher in former IDA children than in controls throughout the whole night. Conclusion: The association between IDA in infancy, despite iron therapy, and PLMS in childhood could lead to new research in this area. Indeed, transient infantile IDA, a common nutritional problem among human infants, may turn out to be important for understanding the mechanisms of PLMS or restless legs syndrome, which are common in adulthood.Patricio Peirano, Cecilia Algarin, Rodrigo Chamorro, Mauro Manconi, Betsy Lozoff, Raffaele Ferr
Effects of seagrasses and algae of the Caulerpa family on hydrodynamics and particle-trapping rates
The widespread decline of seagrass beds within the Mediterranean often results in the replacement of seagrasses by opportunistic green algae of the Caulerpa family. Because Caulerpa beds have a different height, stiffness and density compared to seagrasses, these changes in habitat type modify the interaction of the seafloor with hydrodynamics, influencing key processes such as sediment resuspension and particle trapping. Here, we compare the effects on hydrodynamics and particle trapping of Caulerpa taxifolia, C. racemosa, and C. prolifera with the Mediterranean seagrasses Cymodocea nodosa and Posidonia oceanica. All macrophyte canopies reduced near-bed volumetric flow rates compared to bare sediment, vertical profiles of turbulent kinetic energy revealed peak values around the top of the canopies, and maximum values of Reynolds stress increased by a factor of between 1.4 (C. nodosa) and 324.1 (P. oceanica) when vegetation was present. All canopies enhanced particle retention rates compared to bare sediment. The experimental C. prolifera canopy was the most effective at particle retention (m2 habitat); however, C. racemosa had the largest particle retention capacity per structure surface area. Hence, in terms of enhancing particle trapping and reducing hydrodynamic forces at the sediment surface, Caulerpa beds provided a similar or enhanced function compared to P.oceanica and C. nodosa. However, strong seasonality in the leaf area index of C. racemosa and C. taxifolia within the Mediterranean, combined with a weak rhizome structure, suggests that sediments maybe unprotected during winter storms, when most erosion occurs. Autoinforme de adolescentes ADA: manual de aplicación, corrección e interpretación
Es conocida la idea de Wordsworth (1770-1850) de que el niño es el padre del hombre, frase que se convierte en sentencia si a ese niño y a ese adolescente no se lo considera más allá de las fronteras delineadas por las creencias imperantes histórica, social y familiarmente. Ese es, en ciernes, el adulto que devendrá por cada vez más años, según el aumento de la expectativa de vida, por tanto, toda acción que emprendamos para procurar esclarecer e intervenir en etapas tempranas, supone una apuesta fuerte a descender sus problemas en salud mental, sus conflictos familiares y sociales, los costes que de ellos devienen y por, sobre todo, aumentar sus posibilidades de bienestar para tanto tiempo por vivir. Cuando comenzamos a trabajar hace años en el ámbito de la clínica con niños y adolescentes y posteriormente con adultos, fuimos viendo con claridad cómo esa frase de Wordsworth se iba dibujando en la vida de las personas que atendíamos, tomando forma de tristeza hasta llegar a la desesperanza, miedo tan atrapante que impedía tanto y le abroquelaba tras múltiples corazas y defensas, ansiedad que lo volvían desdichado, ira que lo hacían cometer actos violentos aún con los que aseguraba amar, desajuste y falta de adaptación porque pensaba tan diferente y así sentía y no entendía y no se entendía. Recorrimos varios trechos del camino junto a esas y otras formas de sufrimiento psíquico y eso nos impulsó a buscar estrategias de evaluación más rápidas y eficientes, a indagar sobre cómo la ciencia explicaba lo que ocurría y en tanto seguir intentando atisbar alguna luz que ayude a quien padece y al profesional que le atiende. Así nace este desarrollo instrumental, en habla hispana, al sur de las Américas, con el apoyo de mucha gente y con el expertís que nos proveyó el equipo de investigación de la Prof. López Soler en la Universidad de Murcia y la generosidad académica que distingue a muchos de nuestros colegas. En una imperdible entrevista realizada a Sir Michel Rutter en 2008 en la Universidad de Oxford por los profesores Tansey e Iversen, recorriendo su historia académica y su trabajo en la isla de Wight, su reconocidísimo aporte al esclarecimiento de los trastornos del espectro autista, nos muestra una de sus fortalezas cuando dice que en ciencia se necesita cuestionar los propios hallazgos “despiadadamente”, preguntándose reiteradamente sobre la evidencia y las formas de encontrarla, sin dejar de hacer lugar para lo inesperado. Este desarrollo instrumental sigue esas premisas de Rutter y así se fueron edificando las bases conceptuales, buscando evidencias que pudiéramos transformar en reactivos, en esa encrucijada, de la que habla Rutter, entre lo psicosocial, lo biológico, lo clínico y la investigación académica, atendiendo a lo posible, creando un espacio para lo impensado, y al final contar con una forma de indagar sobre el sufrimiento psíquico de los adolescentes y también sobre su resiliencia y bienestar. Fue un camino largo, de muchas idas y vueltas, pero donde aprendimos tanto y de tantas personas, en especial de los jóvenes que, con esa franca generosidad que les caracteriza, nos hicieron partícipes de su mirada y sus confidencias.
