Praxis is a platform that allows students to search internship offers submitted by companies, research labs and higher education institutions. The success of the platform depends on its adoption by students that use keywords to find internships and organizations that need candidates to fill their vacancies. The two problems detected with the platform are the high number of searches without results and the low percentage of internships with candidates. This work explores text mining techniques with the objective of creating a tool to analyse the discrepancy between supply and demand, helping to identify market gaps and possible improvements to the search engine. The final solution allows Praxis administrators to intuitively analyse the available data on a dashboard. Additionally, from the analysis made, limitations were found on the existing search engine, so an improved one was created. Predictability of stock market returns: evidence from Eurozone's banking sectors

This paper analyzes the in-, and out-of sample, predictability of the stock market returns from Eurozone’s banking sectors, arising from bank-specific ratios and macroeconomic variables, using panel estimation techniques. In order to do that, I set an unbalanced panel of 116 banks returns, from April, 1991, to March, 2013, to constitute equal-weighted country-sorted portfolios representative of the Austrian, Belgian, Finish, French, German, Greek, Irish, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish banking sectors. I find that both earnings per share (EPS) and the ratio of total loans to total assets have in-sample predictive power over the portfolios’ monthly returns whereas, regarding the cross-section of annual returns, only EPS retain significant explanatory power. Nevertheless, the sign associated with the impact of EPS is contrarian to the results of past literature. When looking at inter-yearly horizon returns, I document in-sample predictive power arising from the ratios of provisions to net interest income, and non-interest income to net income. Regarding the out-of-sample performance of the proposed models, I find that these would only beat the portfolios’ historical mean on the month following the disclosure of year-end financial statements. Still, the evidence found is not statistically significant. Finally, in a last attempt to find significant evidence of predictability of monthly and annual returns, I use Fama and French 3-Factor and Carhart models to describe the cross-section of returns. Although in-sample the factors can significantly track Eurozone’s banking sectors’ stock market returns, they do not beat the portfolios’ historical mean when forecasting returns.NSBE - UN

Musikla: Language for generating musical events

    Get PDF
In this paper, we'll discuss a simple approach to integrating musical events, such as notes or chords, into a programming language. This means treating music sequences as a first class citizen. It will be possible to save those sequences into variables or play them right away, pass them into functions or apply operators on them (like transposing or repeating the sequence). Furthermore, instead of just allowing static sequences to be generated, we'll integrate a music keyboard system that easily allows the user to bind keys (or other kinds of events) to expressions. Finally, it is important to provide the user with multiple and extensible ways of outputing their music, such as synthesizing it into a file or directly into the speakers, or writing a MIDI or music sheet file. We'll structure this paper first with an analysis of the problem and its particular requirements. Then we will discuss the solution we developed to meet those requirements. Finally we'll analyze the result and discuss possible alternative routes we could've taken.- (undefined

Using ArchiMate to Assess COBIT 5 and ITIL Implementations

The assessment of Enterprise Governance of IT (EGIT) mechanisms, such as COBIT and ITIL, is considered highly complex and implies a duplication of resources. The main goal of this research is to reduce the complexity of EGIT mechanisms by facilitating the assessment of these mechanisms when used simultaneously. Organisational stakeholders should be able to easily understand the impact of implementing ITIL on COBIT 5 Processes Performance without being COBIT experts. On the other hand, they should know their organisation’s positioning according to ITIL, even if they just follow COBIT and do not master ITIL. In order to fulfil our goal, we propose a model that uses TIPA for ITIL, COBIT PAM and ArchiMate to analyse the impact of ITIL implementation on COBIT processes performance, and vice-versa. We demonstrate our proposal by analysing the impact of the Incident Management and Request Fulfilment ITIL processes on the COBIT 5 related process

Test beam operation of the CMS calorimeter trigger synchronization boards

    Get PDF
The CMS experiment uses information from its electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters and muon detectors to decide whether to readout the whole detector. For such a task to be successful, all trigger primitives pushed through the trigger decision tree must be flawlessly aligned in time for operation at 40 MHz. Both calorimeters in CMS use the Synchronization Link Board for this purpose. In this article we report on the results of tests of this board using realistic beam conditions, which demonstrate the soundness of the adopted architecture and synchronization principle

International Energy Agency The International Energy Agency (IEA) was established in 1974 within the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to implement an international energy programme. A basic aim of the IEA is to foster co-operation among the twenty-eight IEA participating countries and to increase energy security through energy conservation, development of alternative energy sources and energy research, development and demonstration (RD&D). Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems The IEA co-ordinates research and development in a number of areas related to energy. The mission of one of those areas, the ECBCS - Energy Conservation for Building and Community Systems Programme, is to develop and facilitate the integration of technologies and processes for energy efficiency and conservation into healthy, low emission, and sustainable buildings and communities, through innovation and research. The research and development strategies of the ECBCS Programme are derived from research drivers, national programmes within IEA countries, and the IEA Future Building Forum Think Tank Workshop, held in March 2007. The R&D strategies represent a collective input of the Executive Committee members to exploit technological opportunities to save energy in the buildings sector, and to remove technical obstacles to market penetration of new energy conservation technologies. The R&D strategies apply to residential, commercial, office buildings and community systems, and will impact the building industry in three focus areas of R&D activities: Dissemination Decision-making Building products and systemsIEA - International Energy Agency ECBCS - Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems Annex 50 – Prefabricated Systems for Low Energy Renovation of Residential Building

The implementation of the Basel III reforms, between 01/01/2013 and 01/01/2019, corresponds to a deep change within the scenario and reference frame that manages the Financial Institutions, from which results some significant changes related to the role of the regulators. Namely: the addition of capital buffers and the promotion of new management guidelines and risk measurement (amongst which stands out the leverage ratio without considering the risk evaluation and the creation of minimum requirements related to liquidity). One of these new measures is the creation of mechanisms that restrict the cyclicity of the bank capital requirements, ie, the search for solutions that may increase solvency levels during this economical cycle expansionary periods and the search for solutions that may decrease those same levels during recessions. During this dissertation I'll explore the methodology used to create anti-cyclical bank reserves promoted by the Basel Committee. The idea is to apply these measurements to the Portuguese scenario by testing its effectiveness and identifying any gaps. Besides that, herein lie some alternative methodologies that may lead to the achievement of the intended goal

The search of energy consumption and cost reductions, in organizations, led to the implementation of energy management systems, that allowed automatic consumption monitoring. However, consequence of the harsher legislation, the search for cost reduction and the energy policies focused on the environment protection, there is a growing demand for tools, integrated in management systems, that support the pursuit of energy efficiency improvement goals. In this sense, this master dissertation project intends to perform an analysis of the current available market solutions, the idealization and specification of a management module compatible with the standard, that allows for main energy uses examination according to the norm, creating improvement plans and evaluating their results. Finally, within the context of this dissertation, part of the 50001 module will be developed so that the concepts, specification and architecture can be validated
