The central star of the planetary nebula PB 8: a Wolf-Rayet-type wind of an unusual WN/WC chemical composition
A considerable fraction of the central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) are
hydrogen-deficient. As a rule, these CSPNe exhibit a chemical composition of
helium, carbon, and oxygen with the majority showing Wolf-Rayet-like emission
line spectra. These stars are classified as CSPNe of a spectral type [WC]. We
perform a spectral analysis of CSPN PB 8 with the Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR)
models for expanding atmospheres. The source PB 8 displays wind-broadened
emission lines from strong mass loss. Most strikingly, we find that its surface
composition is hydrogen-deficient, but not carbon-rich. With mass fractions of
55% helium, 40% hydrogen, 1.3% carbon, 2% nitrogen, and 1.3% oxygen, it differs
greatly from the 30-50% of carbon which are typically seen in [WC]-type central
stars. The atmospheric mixture in PB 8 has an analogy in the WN/WC transition
type among the massive Wolf-Rayet stars. Therefore we suggest to introduce a
new spectral type [WN/WC] for CSPNe, with PB 8 as its first member. The central
star of PB 8 has a relatively low temperature of T=52kK, as expected for
central stars in their early evolutionary stages. Its surrounding nebula is
less than 3000 years old, i.e. relatively young. Existing calculations for the
post-AGB evolution can produce hydrogen-deficient stars of the [WC] type, but
do not predict the composition found in PB 8. We discuss various scenarios that
might explain the origin of this unique object.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
The Metallicities of Low Stellar Mass Galaxies and the Scatter in the Mass-Metallicity Relation
In this investigation we quantify the metallicities of low mass galaxies by
constructing the most comprehensive census to date. We use galaxies from the
SDSS and DEEP2 survey and estimate metallicities from their optical emission
lines. We also use two smaller samples from the literature which have
metallicities determined by the direct method using the temperature sensitive
[OIII]4363 line. We examine the scatter in the local mass-metallicity (MZ)
relation determined from ~20,000 star-forming galaxies in the SDSS and show
that it is larger at lower stellar masses, consistent with the theoretical
scatter in the MZ relation determined from hydrodynamical simulations. We
determine a lower limit for the scatter in metallicities of galaxies down to
stellar masses of ~10^7 M_solar that is only slightly smaller than the expected
scatter inferred from the SDSS MZ relation and significantly larger than what
is previously established in the literature. The average metallicity of
star-forming galaxies increases with stellar mass. By examining the scatter in
the SDSS MZ relation, we show that this is mostly due to the lowest metallicity
galaxies. The population of low mass, metal-rich galaxies have properties which
are consistent with previously identified galaxies that may be transitional
objects between gas-rich dwarf irregulars and gas-poor dwarf spheroidals and

Large amplitude periodic outbursts and long period variables in the VVV VIRAC2- database

This is the accepted manuscript version of an article which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1093/mnras/stac768The VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey obtained near-infrared photometry toward the Galactic bulge and the southern disc plane for a decade (2010 - 2019). We designed a modified Lomb-Scargle method to search for large-amplitude (Ks > 1.5 mag) mid to long-term periodic variables (P > 10 d) in the 2nd version of VVV Infrared Astrometric Catalogue (VIRAC2-). In total, 1520 periodic sources were discovered, including 59 candidate periodic outbursting young stellar objects (YSOs), based on the unique morphology of the phase-folded light curves, proximity to Galactic HII regions and mid-infrared colours. Five sources are spectroscopically confirmed as accreting YSOs. Both fast-rise/slow-decay and slow-rise/fast-decay periodic outbursts were found, but fast-rise/slow-decay outbursts predominate at the highest amplitudes. The multi-wavelength colour variations are consistent with a variable mass accretion process, as opposed to variable extinction. The cycles are likely to be caused by dynamical perturbations from stellar or planetary companions within the circumstellar disc. An additional search for periodic variability amongst YSO candidates in published Spitzer-based catalogues yielded a further 71 candidate periodic accretors, mostly with lower amplitudes. These resemble cases of pulsed accretion but with unusually long periods and greater regularity. The majority of other long-period variables are pulsating dusty Miras with smooth and symmetric light curves. We find that some Miras have redder colours than previously thought, most likely due to their surface chemical compositions.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Multiwavelength detection of an ongoing FUOr-type outburst on a low-mass YSO

The rarely seen FUOr-type events are valuable laboratories to investigate the outbursting nature of YSOs. Here, we present multiwavelength detection of a high-amplitude eruptive source in the young open cluster VdBH 221 with an ongoing outburst, including optical to mid-infrared time series and near-infrared spectra. The initial outburst has an exceptional amplitude of >6.3 mag in Gaia and 4.6 mag in Ks, with a peak luminosity up to 16 Lâ and a peak mass accretion rate of 1.4 Ă 10-5 Mâ yr-1. The optical to infrared spectral energy distribution of this object is consistent with a low-mass star (0.2 Mâ) with a modest extinction (AV < 2 mag). A 100-d delay between optical and infrared rising stages is detected, suggesting an outside-in origin of the instability. The spectroscopic features of this object reveal a self-luminous accretion disc, very similar to FU Orionis, with a low line-of-sight extinction. Most recently, there has been a gradual increase in brightness throughout the wavelength range, possibly suggesting an enhancement of the mass accretion rate.Peer reviewe
Modelling Cognitive Decline in the Hypertension in the Very Elderly Trial [HYVET] and Proposed Risk Tables for Population Use
Although, on average, cognition declines with age, cognition in older adults is a dynamic process. Hypertension is associated with greater decline in cognition with age, but whether treatment of hypertension affects this is uncertain. Here, we modelled dynamics of cognition in relation to the treatment of hypertension, to see if treatment effects might better be discerned by a model that included baseline measures of cognition and consequent mortalityThis is a secondary analysis of the Hypertension in the Very Elderly Trial (HYVET), a double blind, placebo controlled trial of indapamide, with or without perindopril, in people aged 80+ years at enrollment. Cognitive states were defined in relation to errors on the Mini-Mental State Examination, with more errors signifying worse cognition. Change in cognitive state was evaluated using a dynamic model of cognitive transition. In the model, the probabilities of transitions between cognitive states is represented by a Poisson distribution, with the Poisson mean dependent on the baseline cognitive state. The dynamic model of cognitive transition was good (R(2) = 0.74) both for those on placebo and (0.86) for those on active treatment. The probability of maintaining cognitive function, based on baseline function, was slightly higher in the actively treated group (e.g., for those with the fewest baseline errors, the chance of staying in that state was 63% for those on treatment, compared with 60% for those on placebo). Outcomes at two and four years could be predicted based on the initial state and treatment.A dynamic model of cognition that allows all outcomes (cognitive worsening, stability improvement or death) to be categorized simultaneously detected small but consistent differences between treatment and control groups (in favour of treatment) amongst very elderly people treated for hypertension. The model showed good fit, and suggests that most change in cognition in very elderly people is small, and depends on their baseline state and on treatment. Additional work is needed to understand whether this modelling approach is well suited to the valuation of small effects, especially in the face of mortality differences between treatment groups.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT0012281
Habitable Zones in the Universe
Habitability varies dramatically with location and time in the universe. This
was recognized centuries ago, but it was only in the last few decades that
astronomers began to systematize the study of habitability. The introduction of
the concept of the habitable zone was key to progress in this area. The
habitable zone concept was first applied to the space around a star, now called
the Circumstellar Habitable Zone. Recently, other, vastly broader, habitable
zones have been proposed. We review the historical development of the concept
of habitable zones and the present state of the research. We also suggest ways
to make progress on each of the habitable zones and to unify them into a single

Phylogenetic relationships of cone snails endemic to Cabo Verde based on mitochondrial genomes
Background: Due to their great species and ecological diversity as well as their capacity to produce hundreds of different toxins, cone snails are of interest to evolutionary biologists, pharmacologists and amateur naturalists alike. Taxonomic identification of cone snails still relies mostly on the shape, color, and banding patterns of the shell. However, these phenotypic traits are prone to homoplasy. Therefore, the consistent use of genetic data for species delimitation and phylogenetic inference in this apparently hyperdiverse group is largely wanting. Here, we reconstruct the phylogeny of the cones endemic to Cabo Verde archipelago, a well-known radiation of the group, using mitochondrial (mt) genomes. Results: The reconstructed phylogeny grouped the analyzed species into two main clades, one including Kalloconus from West Africa sister to Trovaoconus from Cabo Verde and the other with a paraphyletic Lautoconus due to the sister group relationship of Africonus from Cabo Verde and Lautoconus ventricosus from Mediterranean Sea and neighboring Atlantic Ocean to the exclusion of Lautoconus endemic to Senegal (plus Lautoconus guanche from Mauritania, Morocco, and Canary Islands). Within Trovaoconus, up to three main lineages could be distinguished. The clade of Africonus included four main lineages (named I to IV), each further subdivided into two monophyletic groups. The reconstructed phylogeny allowed inferring the evolution of the radula in the studied lineages as well as biogeographic patterns. The number of cone species endemic to Cabo Verde was revised under the light of sequence divergence data and the inferred phylogenetic relationships. Conclusions: The sequence divergence between continental members of the genus Kalloconus and island endemics ascribed to the genus Trovaoconus is low, prompting for synonymization of the latter. The genus Lautoconus is paraphyletic. Lautoconus ventricosus is the closest living sister group of genus Africonus. Diversification of Africonus was in allopatry due to the direct development nature of their larvae and mainly triggered by eustatic sea level changes during the Miocene-Pliocene. Our study confirms the diversity of cone endemic to Cabo Verde but significantly reduces the number of valid species.
