The main goals of this study were investigate the morphology and biology of Dalechampia aff. triphylla pseudanthium and its potential pollinators. The species occurs in Viçosa, southeastern Brazil and is a ruderal species. The production of flowers and fruits occurred during the whole year of study. Two green involucral bracts and two subinflorescences, one female and other male, constitute the pseudanthium. The male subinflorescence contains staminate flowers and a resiniferous gland. The pseudanthia are protogynous, with an initial female phase, which lasted 1,7 days, followed by a bisexual phase, which lasted 9,1 days. The involucral bracts opened every day by the morning and closed around 19:00h. During the female phase, bract opens between 9:00 and 11:00h, while in the bisexual phase it opens between 6:00 and 7:00h. This anticipates opening of involucral bracts of pseudanthia in bisexual phase seems to favor pollen transference by pollinators, to pseudanthia in female phase. D. aff. triphylla is visited by four species of stingless bees, Friesella schrottkyi, Plebeia droryana, Plebeia sp., Tetragonisca angustula. All of them were potential pollinators of the species, and that is for the first time reported for a Dalechampia species. These bees have their body length as long as stigma-resin gland distance so they are capable of fertilize stigmas during resin collection. Finally, continuous flowering, visiting behavior of pollinators, differential timing of involucral bracts opening according to pseudanthium phase, and extended duration of the bisexual phase are factors that contribute to the reproductive success of D. aff. triphylla.

Affinity coefficient for clustering autoregressive moving average models

In various fields, such as economics, finance, bioinformatics, geology, and medicine, namely, in the cases of electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram, and biotechnology, cluster analysis of time series is necessary. The first step in cluster applications is to establish a similarity/dissimilarity coefficient between time series. This article introduces an extension of the affinity coefficient for the autoregressive expansions of the invertible autoregressive moving average models to measure their similarity between them. An application of the affinity coefficient between time series was developed and implemented in R. Cluster analysis is performed with the corresponding distance for the estimated simulated autoregressive moving average of order one. The primary findings indicate that processes with similar forecast functions are grouped (in the same cluster) as expected concerning the affinity coefficient. It was also possible to conclude that this affinity coefficient is very sensitive to the behavior changes of the forecast functions: processes with small different forecast functions appear to be well separated in different clusters. Moreover, if the two processes have at least an infinite number of π- weights with a symmetric signal, the affinity value is also symmetric.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

While there are many studies about the Way of St James, little attention has been paid to the landscape features of the route and their significance for pilgrims. Barcelos, a municipality on the Portuguese Way of St James, is a good laboratory for the analysis of these elements. The study was carried out in 2020 and in 2022. Using a grid of 22 variables, the study analysed the type of landscape, its significance, areas for rest and meditation, and drinking water points along the 33.6 km of the route that lie within the municipality of Barcelos. The results reveal that, despite certain improvements between 2020 and 2022, additional changes are still needed in order to improve pilgrims’ well-being and mental health

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze clinical and laboratory parameters and their association with longterm outcomes in patients who underwent liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment, according to the etiology of the underlying chronic liver disease, in order to identify predictors of response to this therapeutic modality. METHODS: Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from a cohort of 134 patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment at a referral center in Brazil were retrospectively selected and compared according to the etiologic group of the underlying chronic liver disease. Events, defined as tumor recurrence or death from any cause, and event-free survival were also analyzed, and multivariate analysis was performed. RESULTS: The etiologies comprised hepatitis C and B virus infection, alcohol abuse, and cryptogenic disorder. Although liver transplantation was performed outside the Milan criteria in 33.3% of the subjects, according to pathologic examination of the explanted liver, the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score was low (o22) in most patients (70.6%) and recurrence was identified in only 10 (7.9%) patients. Events occurred in 37 patients (28.5%), and the median event-free survival was 75 months (range, 24-116 months). No difference among etiologic groups was found in the parameters analyzed, which were not independently associated with outcome. CONCLUSION: Clinical and laboratory characteristics according to etiologic groups were not different, which might have led to comparable long-term outcomes among these patient groups and failure to identify predictors that could aid in better selection of subjects for liver transplantation in the management of this cancer

Objective: In Southern European countries up to one-third of the patients with hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) do not present the common HFE risk genotype. In order to investigate the molecular basis of these cases we have designed a gene panel for rapid and simultaneous analysis of 6 HH-related genes (HFE, TFR2, HJV, HAMP, SLC40A1 and FTL) by next-generation sequencing (NGS). Materials and Methods: Eighty-eight iron overload Portuguese patients, negative for the common HFE mutations, were analysed. A TruSeq Custom Amplicon kit (TSCA, by Illumina) was designed in order to generate 97 amplicons covering exons, intron/exon junctions and UTRs of the mentioned genes with a cumulative target sequence of 12115bp. Amplicons were sequenced in the MiSeq instrument (IIlumina) using 250bp paired-end reads. Sequences were aligned against human genome reference hg19 using alignment and variant caller algorithms in the MiSeq reporter software. Novel variants were validated by Sanger sequencing and their pathogenic significance were assessed by in silico studies. Results: We found a total of 55 different genetic variants. These include novel pathogenic missense and splicing variants (in HFE and TFR2), a very rare variant in IRE of FTL, a variant that originates a novel translation initiation codon in the HAMP gene, among others. Conclusion: The merging of TSCA methodology and NGS technology appears to be an appropriate tool for simultaneous and fast analysis of HH-related genes in a large number of samples. However, establishing the clinical relevance of NGS-detected variants for HH development remains a hard-working task, requiring further functional studies. This work was partially funded by FCT: PEst-OE/SAU/UI0009/2013 and PEst-OE/SAU/UI4013/201

Lateral Patellar Luxation and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) in a Dog

Background: Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a rare genetic disease characterized by a deficiency in collagen synthesis, which can result in joint laxity. Patellar luxation is one of the main orthopedic conditions that affect the canine knee joint, with limited descriptions of its association with EDS in dogs. The purpose of this report is to describe the surgical management and postoperative evolution of a 1-year-old Chow Chow dog with grade II patellar luxation, tibial valgus and EDS.Case: A 1-year-old Chow Chow dog was referred to the University Veterinary Hospital due to lameness of the left pelvic for 3 months. At the orthopedic examination were verified severe lameness and lateral deviation of the left stifle joint during the ambulation of the animal. Additionally, it was verified bilateral hyperextension of the tibiotarsal joint and grade II patellar luxation of both pelvic limbs with painful hyperextension of the left stifle joint. Radiographic evaluation showed lateral displacement of the patella from both femoral trochlear groove, and a valgus deviation of the proximal left tibial shaft. In addition, it was verified cutaneous hyperextensibility and an extensibility index suggestive of EDS. The animal was submitted to trochlear block resection technique and medial imbrication, followed by corrective tibial osteotomy. Furthermore, skin biopsies of the scapular and lumbar folds were performed during the corrective tibial osteotomy. The samples were sent for histopathological examination, which revealed fragmented and unorganized collagen fibers in the dermis. Histopathological findings were compatible with EDS. The absence of lameness and correct positioning of the patella in the trochlear sulcus were verified in the post-surgical follow-up. Complete bone consolidation of the closing wedge osteotomy to correct the tibial valgus was verified at 90 days postoperatively.Discussion: The clinical signs, cutaneous extensibility index, and histopathological abnormalities in the present case were consistent with EDS. In the present study, this congenital collagen abnormality syndrome may have been a contributing factor of patellar luxation as EDS can result in hypermobility of ligaments and joints, due to metabolic and structural abnormalities of the collagen in connective tissues, and consequently may promote patellar luxation and other orthopedic abnormalities. A variant of EDS in humans has been implicated in the development of skeletal abnormalities such as short stature and bone deformities. This corroborates the possibility that EDS is correlated with valgus angulation of the proximal portion of the tibia in the present case. However, in-depth genetic studies are required to confirm this correlation. Corrective osteotomy in conjunction with block recession sulcoplasty and medial imbrication seem to have enabled patellofemoral stability and alignment of the quadriceps mechanism, ensuring that the patella remained in the trochlear sulcus, even in the presence of EDS. In addition, this syndrome does not seem to affect the surgical outcome of the treatment of patellar luxation associated with closed wedge osteotomy for tibial valgus correction. Medium-term follow-up can be considered excellent in this case report since there was a rapid resolution of lameness and adequate corrective osteotomy healing despite persistent hyperextension of the tibiotarsal joint. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome did not contraindicate the surgical treatment of patellar luxation. However, further studies are needed to assess the influence of the syndrome on long-term patellar luxation. The findings of this case report can help in the diagnosis and treatment of other animals affected by this rare syndrome and associated orthopedic diseases. Keywords: patellar luxation, bone, collagen diseases
