    A new technique to generate 100 GW-level attosecond X-ray pulses from the X-ray SASE FELs

    We propose a scheme for generation of single 100 GW 300-as pulse in the X-ray free electron laser with the use of a few cycles optical pulse from Ti:sapphire laser system. Femtosecond optical pulse interacts with the electron beam in the two-period undulator resonant to 800 nm wavelength and produces energy modulation within a slice of the electron bunch. Following the energy modulator the electron beam enters the first part of the baseline gap-adjustable X-ray undulator and produces SASE radiation with 100 MW-level power. Due to energy modulation the frequency is correlated to the longitudinal position within the few-cycle-driven slice of the SASE radiation pulse. The largest frequency offset corresponds to a single-spike pulse in the time domain which is confined to one half-oscillation period near the central peak electron energy. After the first undulator the electron beam is guided through a magnetic delay which we use to position the X-ray spike with the largest frequency offset at the "fresh" part of the electron bunch. After the chicane the electron beam and the radiation produced in the first undulator enter the second undulator which is resonant with the offset frequency. In the second undulator the seed radiation at reference frequency plays no role, and only a single (300 as duration) spike grows rapidly. The final part of the undulator is a tapered section allowing to achieve maximum output power 100-150 GW in 0.15 nm wavelength range. Attosecond X-ray pulse is naturally synchronized with its fs optical pulse which reveals unique perspective for pump-probe experiments with sub-femtosecond resolution.Comment: 14 pages, 13 fig

    Scaling in a SU(2)/Z_3 model of cosmic superstring networks

    Motivated by recent developments in superstring theory in the cosmological context, we examine a field theory which contains string networks with 3-way junctions. We perform numerical simulations of this model, identify the length scales of the network that forms, and provide evidence that the length scales tend towards a scaling regime, growing in proportion to time. We infer that the presence of junctions does not in itself cause a superstring network to dominate the energy density of the early Universe.Comment: 12pp, 3 fig

    Terawatt-scale sub-10-fs laser technology - key to generation of GW-level attosecond pulses in X-ray free electron laser

    We propose a technique for the production of attosecond X-ray pulses which is based on the use of X-ray SASE FEL combined with a femtosecond laser system. A few-cycle optical pulse from a Ti:sapphire laser interacts with the electron beam in a two-period undulator resonant to 800 nm wavelength and produces energy modulation within a slice of the electron bunch. Following the energy modulator the electron beam enters the X-ray undulator and produces SASE radiation. Due to energy modulation the frequency is correlated to the longitudinal position within the few-cycle-driven slice of SASE radiation pulse. The largest frequency offset corresponds to a single-spike pulse in the time domain which is confined to one half-oscillation period near the central peak electron energy. The selection of single-spike pulses is achieved by using a crystal monochromator after the X-ray undulator. Our studies show that the proposed technique is capable to produce 300 attoseconds long single pulses with GW-level output power in the 0.1 nm wavelength range, and is applicable to the European X-Ray Laser Project XFEL and the Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure

    Correspondence in Quasiperiodic and Chaotic Maps: Quantization via the von Neumann Equation

    A generalized approach to the quantization of a large class of maps on a torus, i.e. quantization via the von Neumann Equation, is described and a number of issues related to the quantization of model systems are discussed. The approach yields well behaved mixed quantum states for tori for which the corresponding Schrodinger equation has no solutions, as well as an extended spectrum for tori where the Schrodinger equation can be solved. Quantum-classical correspondence is demonstrated for the class of mappings considered, with the Wigner-Weyl density ρ(p,q,t)\rho(p,q,t) going to the correct classical limit. An application to the cat map yields, in a direct manner, nonchaotic quantum dynamics, plus the exact chaotic classical propagator in the correspondence limit.Comment: 36 pages, RevTex preprint forma

    Les résultats qui sont présentés ici sont issus d'un programme ayant un double objectif. D'une part, en relation étroite avec les recherches archéologiques, il s'agissait de préciser la chronologie de l'occupation du site sur la longue durée et de reconstituer l'organisation locale de l'espace à l'époque maya. D'autre part, il a été pris pour hypothèse que l'analyse des formes contemporaines de colonisation pouvait aider, sur la base de la méthode régressive, à reconstituer les logiques agraires passées. Les premières recherches menées dans le nord-ouest du Petén livrent des résultats inattendus et relativement contradictoires. D'un côté, la corrélation entre les études sur les dynamiques contemporaines et les études géo-archéologiques tend à démontrer une relative stabilité à travers les siècles des potentialités et des processus agraires, en fonction des contraintes géomorphologiques, biogéographiques et pédologiques. D'un autre côté, les premières données paléoenvironnementales laissent entrevoir une occupation très ancienne, ce qui commence à être vérifié par les fouilles archéologiques

    We show human herpesvirus 8 with diverse molecular subtype D variants to be highly endemic among the Ni-Vanuatu population. Most K1 genes were nearly identical to Polynesian strains, although a few clustered with Australian or Taiwanese strains. These results suggest diverse origins of the Ni-Vanuatu population and raise questions about the ancient human population movements in Melanesia

    From 1991 to 1998, Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, B, and C represented 2%-10% of strains isolated from cases of bacterial meningitis in Yaoundé. During 1999 to 2000, the percentage of meningococci reached 17%, a proportion never reported since recordkeeping began in 1984. The increase of serogroup A meningococci and the emergence of W135 strains highlight the need for increased surveillance for better diagnosis and prevention

However, insights in mechanisms involved are limited. In this randomized placebo-controlled cross-over trial, healthy human subjects were given Lactobacillus plantarum supplementation (strain TIFN101, CIP104448, or WCFS1) or placebo for 7 days. To determine whether L. plantarum can enhance immune response, we compared the effects of three stains on systemic and gut mucosal immunity, by among others assessing memory responses against tetanus toxoid (TT)-antigen, and mucosal gene transcription, in human volunteers during induction of mild immune stressor in the intestine, by giving a commonly used enteropathic drug, indomethacin [non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)]. Systemic effects of the interventions were studies in peripheral blood samples. NSAID was found to induce a reduction in serum CD4+/Foxp3 regulatory cells, which was prevented by L. plantarum TIFN101. T-cell polarization experiments showed L. plantarum TIFN101 to enhance responses against TT-antigen, which indicates stimulation of memory responses by this strain. Cell extracts of the specific L. plantarum strains provoked responses after WCFS1 and TIFN101 consumption, indicating stimulation of immune responses against the specific bacteria. Mucosal immunomodulatory effects were studied in duodenal biopsies. In small intestinal mucosa, TIFN101 upregulated genes associated with maintenance of T- and B-cell function and antigen presentation. Furthermore, L. plantarum TIFN101 and WCFS1 downregulated immunological pathways involved in antigen presentation and shared downregulation of snoRNAs, which may suggest cellular destabilization, but may also be an indicator of tissue repair. Full sequencing of the L. plantarum strains revealed possible gene clusters that might be responsible for the differential biological effects of the bacteria on host immunity. In conclusion, the impact of oral consumption L. plantarum on host immunity is strain dependent and involves responses against bacterial cell components. Some strains may enhance specific responses against pathogens by enhancing antigen presentation and leukocyte maintenance in mucosa. In future studies and clinical settings, caution should be taken in selecting beneficial bacteria as closely related strains can have different effects. Our data show that specific bacterial strains can prevent immune stress induced by commonly consumed painkillers such as NSAID and can have enhancing beneficial effects on immunity of consumers by stimulating antigen presentation and memory responses
