Effectiveness of late-life depression interventions on functional limitations:A systematic review
Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders in older adults and leads to considerable decreases in health, well-being, and impaired functioning. Intervention studies have focused on the effects on symptomatic recovery, and most do not include functional recovery as an outcome. Reduction of functional limitations as a treatment goal in old-age psychiatry aligns with the values of older persons. The objective of this review was therefore to evaluate the effectiveness of late-life depression interventions on functional limitations. This systematic review identified 15 randomized controlled trials in which the effectiveness of different interventions on functional limitations was evaluated in patients with late-life depression. The interventions were categorized into four categories: psychological interventions, drug treatment, physical exercise, and collaborative care. Multicomponent and collaborative-care interventions appear to be the most promising for improvement of functional limitations, particularly in primary care and community-dwelling populations of older persons with symptoms of depression. UC Cooperative Extension sensory analysis panel enhances the quality of California olive oil
California’s olive oil industry has evolved from primarily a salvage operation of the table olive industry to a producer of world-class, premium, extra-virgin olive oil. In 1997, UC Cooperative Extension started the first California olive oil taste panel, which was officially recognized by the International Olive Council in 2001. Specific protocols were used to screen potential panelists and train them to identify defects and positive characteristics, identical to 43 other world taste panels. The UCCE panel helped the California Olive Oil Council develop a seal certification program using sensory analysis. Certification provides consumers with assurance that labeled oils are free of defects and warrant the “extra virgin” grade. Sensory evaluation using a unique UCCE profile sheet provides complete and detailed information about specific positive flavor characteristics of olive cultivars grown in California. The UCCE sensory panel has also contributed to a better understanding of the qualities of California olive oil and advancement of the industry by participating in research on pest management, cultural practices and processing
Symptomatic and functional recovery in depression in later life
Objectives: Functional limitations give an indication of the total impact of diseases, such as depression, on individuals health and recovery. This study examines the change in several domains of functioning over 2 years in older persons depressed at baseline (non-remitted group and remitted group after 2 years) and in a non-depressed comparison group. Methods: Data were used from a cohort study (Netherlands Study of Depression in Older persons [NESDO]) consisting of depressed older persons ≥ 60 years (N = 378) and a non-depressed comparison group (N = 132) with 2 years of follow-up (attrition rate 24%). Functional limitations (outcome) were assessed with the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) questionnaire every 6 months. Total scores and domain scores were used. Depression was classified according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria at baseline and at 2-year follow-up. Severity of depression (predictor) was assessed with the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS) at 6-month intervals. Results: Linear mixed models showed that the level of functional limitations differed between the three groups during 2 years of follow-up. The non-remitted group had the highest level of functional limitations during 2 years, followed by the remitted group. Stable low levels of functional limitations were found for the non-depressed group. Remission from depression was accompanied by improvements in functioning, however, compared to the non-depressed comparison group significant functional limitations remained. Higher severity of depression appeared as risk factor for a declining course of functioning, especially the social aspects of functioning. Methodological considerations: Participants that were more severely depressed and more functionally impaired at baseline had higher attrition rates than the participants that were included in the analytical sample. Conclusion: This study showed that depression in later life has long-term debilitating effects on functioning, enduring even after remission from depression. This implies that depression treatment in later life should aim broader than just symptomatic recovery, but also include functional recovery
Transverse spin effects in hadron-pair production from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering
First measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hadron-pair production in
deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised ^6LiD (deuteron)
and NH_3 (proton) targets are presented. The data were taken in the years
2002-2004 and 2007 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/c
at the CERN SPS. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity
distribution functions, without involving the Collins effect as in single
hadron production. The sizeable asymmetries measured on the NH_ target indicate
non-vanishing u-quark transversity and two-hadron interference fragmentation
functions. The small asymmetries measured on the ^6LiD target can be
interpreted as indication for a cancellation of u- and d-quark transversities.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, updated to the published versio
Measurement of eta_c(1S), eta_c(2S) and non-resonant eta' pi+ pi- production via two-photon collisions
We report the measurement of gamma gamma to eta_c(1S), eta_c(2S) to eta' pi+
pi- with eta' decays to gamma rho and eta pi+ pi- using 941 fb^{-1} of data
collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.
The eta_c(1S) mass and width are measured to be M = [2984.6\pm0.7 (stat.)\pm2.2
(syst.)] MeV/c^{2} and \Gamma = [30.8^{+2.3}_{-2.2}~(stat.) \pm 2.5~(syst.)]
MeV, respectively. First observation of eta_c(2S) to eta' pi+ pi- with a
significance of 5.5sigma including systematic error is obtained, and the
eta_c(2S) mass is measured to be M = [3635.1\pm3.7~(stat.)\pm2.9~(syst.)]
MeV/c^{2}. The products of the two-photon decay width and branching fraction
(B) of decays to eta'pi+ pi- are determined to be \Gamma_{gamma gamma}B =
[65.4\pm2.6~(stat.)\pm6.9~(syst.)] eV for eta_c(1S) and
[5.6^{+1.2}_{-1.1}~(stat.)\pm1.1~(syst.)] eV for eta_c(2S). A new decay mode
for the eta_c(1S) to eta'f_0(2080) with f_0(2080) to pi+ pi- is observed with a
statistical significance of 20sigma. The f_0(2080) mass and width are
determined to be M = [2083^{+63}_{-66}~(stat.)\pm 32~(syst.)] MeV/c^{2} and
\Gamma = [178^{+60}_{-178}~(stat.) \pm 55~(syst.)] MeV. The cross sections for
gamma gamma to eta' pi+ pi- and eta'f_{2}(1270) are measured for the first

Invariant-mass and fractional-energy dependence of inclusive production of di-hadrons in annihilation at 10.58 GeV
The inclusive cross sections for di-hadrons of charged pions and kaons
() in electron-positron annihilation are reported. They
are obtained as a function of the total fractional energy and invariant mass
for any di-hadron combination in the same hemisphere as defined by the thrust
event-shape variable and its axis. Since same-hemisphere di-hadrons can be
assumed to originate predominantly from the same initial parton, di-hadron
fragmentation functions are probed. These di-hadron fragmentation functions are
needed as an unpolarized baseline in order to quantitatively understand related
spin-dependent measurements in other processes and to apply them to the
extraction of quark transversity distribution functions in the nucleon. The
di-hadron cross sections are obtained from a data sample
collected at or near the resonance with the Belle detector at

Observation of and search for violation in radiative charm decays
We report the first observation of the radiative charm decay and the first search for violation in decays , , and , using a data sample of
943 fb collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy
collider. The branching fraction is measured to be , where the first
uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The obtained
asymmetries, , , and

annihilations near the , at a center of mass energy of
GeV. The results are based on the fb data
sample collected by the Belle experiment at the asymmetric energy KEKB
collider. Only the meson is reconstructed and the missing-mass spectrum
of candidates is investigated. We observe the
process and find evidence for the
process, while no significant signals of
, , nor are found. Cross sections for the

Measurement of Branching Fractions of Hadronic Decays of the Baryon
Using a data sample of 980 of annihilation data
taken with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy
collider, we report the results of a study of the decays of the
charmed baryon into hadronic final states. We report the most precise
measurements to date of the relative branching fractions of the
into , , , and
, as well as the first measurements of the branching fractions
of the into , , and , all with respect to the decay. In
addition, we investigate the resonant substructure of these modes. Finally, we
present a limit on the branching fraction for the decay

With the full data sample of pairs recorded by
the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider, the decay is studied with the hadronic
decays and . The polarization in two-body hadronic
decays is measured, as well as the ratio of the branching fractions , where
denotes an electron or a muon. Our results, and , are consistent with the theoretical
