    Organic modification of layered silicates for use as barrier pigments in coating systems

    Functional coatings and the barrier pigments they contain are an indispensable part of corrosion or product protection. The frequently used layered silicates in their pure form often do not achieve a sufficient protection of the components or products. The barrier effect of the silicates can be significantly improved through targeted organic modification. The general use of commercial (unmodified) silicates leads to an improvement in the barrier of about 20 %. In contrast, the use of modified silicates achieves an improvement of up to 80 % [1], due to the extent of the diffusion path [2]. Decisive for the diffusion path and therefore for the subsequent functionality of the barrier is the exfoliation and orientation of the silicates, which depends on the compatibility with the coating system. Due to the large number of coating systems and the associated binder classes, the silicates should be specifically adapted to the respective polymer by being modified with reactive groups, which represents the main focus of this work. As a first polymer system an epoxy matrix was chosen. Thus, commercial silicates were modified by an epoxy-oligomer matrix based on 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether. The produced silicates were examined with the aid of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).     Kinetics of Physiological Skin Flora in a Suction Blister Wound Model on Healthy Subjects after Treatment with Water-Filtered Infrared-A Radiation

    The effect of water-filtered infrared-A radiation (wIRA) on normal skin flora was investigated by generating experimental wounds on the forearms of volunteers utilizing the suction blister technique. Over 7 days, recolonization was monitored parallel to wound healing. Four groups of treatment were compared: no therapy (A), dexpanthenol cream once daily (B), 20 min wIRA irradiation at 30 cm distance (C), and wIRA irradiation for 30 min once daily together with dexpanthenol cream once daily (D). All treatments strongly inhibited the recolonization of the wounds. Whereas dexpanthenol completely suppressed recolonization over the test period, recolonization after wIRA without (C) and in combination with dexpanthenol (D) was suppressed, but started on day 5 with considerably higher amounts after the combination treatment (D). Whereas the consequence without treatment (A) was an increasing amount of physiological skin flora including coagulase-negative staphylococci, all treatments (B–D) led to a reduction in physiological skin flora, including coagulase-negative staphylococci. In healthy volunteers, wIRA alone and in combination with dexpanthenol strongly inhibited bacterial recolonization with physiological skin flora after artificial wound setting using a suction-blister wound model. This could support the beneficial effects of wIRA in the promotion of wound healing

    Wärmezeitliche Klima- und Gletscherschwankungen im Pollenprofil eines hochgelegenen Moores (2270 m) der Venedigergruppe

    Das 225 cm mächtige Torflager eines Moores nahe der Rostocker Hütte im Maurertal (südliche Venedigergruppe), in unmittelbarer Nähe des Gletschervorfeldes von Simony- und Maurerkees wurde pollenanalytisch untersucht. Das Torfwachstum begann in 2300 m Höhe um 6800 v. Chr. Somit konnte pollenanalytisch die Vegetationsentwicklung der ganzen postglazialen Wärmezeit erfaßt werden. Die sich im Profil abzeichnenden Klimaverschlechterungen wurden mittels 14C datiert und mit unabhängig davon datierten oder zeitlich eingegrenzten Moränen des Simony- und Maurerkees und anderer Gletscher der Venedigergruppe verglichen. Drei wärmezeitliche Gletscherhochstandsperioden erscheinen damit gut belegt. Es wurden dafür die lokalen Bezeichnungen „Venedigerschwankung" (ca. 6700— 6000 V. Chr.), „Frosnitzschwankung" (ca. 4400—4200 v. Chr.) und „Löbbenschwankung" (ca. 1500—1300 V. Chr.) eingeführt. Weitere Untersuchungen zur Sicherung dieser Ergebnisse sind in Arbeit.researc

    A new solid-phase system for immunoassays

    The development of a new solid-phase separation system based on silane polymers is described. A T3 radioimmunoassay (RIA) was optimized using coated tubes with polymer coatings containing hydrophilic surface aldehyde groups for antibody coupling and a T4 RIA developed on the basis of surface anilino group containing particles using a suspension method. Both RIAs offer very good performances and show the variable usability of the new separation system

    Die ökologische Ferkelerzeugung weist hinsichtlich Tiergesundheit, Leistungsfähigkeit und Wirtschaftlichkeit große Defizite auf. Die Ursachen sind komplex und betreffen u.a. Fütterung, Haltung und Hygiene. Für diese Bereiche sollten durch Exakt- und Praxisversuche Lösungsansätze entwickelt werden. Teilprojekte umfassten folgende Themen: Der Einfluss unterschiedlicher Raufutter in der Fütterung tragender Sauen, die Wirkung einer Inulinzugabe sowie vom Extrudieren von Ackerbohnen in Sauen- und Ferkelfutter, die Bewertung alternativer Desinfektionsverfahren, ein Vergleich von Einzelhaltung versus kombinierte Einzel- und Gruppenhaltung säugender Sauen sowie die Optimierung des Ferkelliegebereichs in der Ferkelaufzucht. Zentrale Ergebnisse: - Die verschiedenen Raufuttervarianten (Kleegrassilage, Heu, Maissilage, Topinamburknollen) hatten keine negativen Effekte auf Körperkonstitution und Reproduktionsleistungen der Sauen. - Die Saugferkel der mit Inulin versorgten Sauen entwickelten sich gegenüber der Kontrollgruppe während der Säugezeit leistungsmäßig besser, während der Ferkelaufzucht gab es keine Leistungssteigerungen. Der Einsatz von getoasteten Ackerbohnen führte zu signifikant besseren Ferkelzunahmen gegenüber dem Einsatz von extrudierten Ackerbohnen. - Keines der getesteten alternativen Desinfektionsverfahren (Heißwasserdampf, elektroaktiviertes Wasser, Abflammen) ist eine Alternative zur chemischen Desinfektion bezüglich Keimreduktion, Arbeitsaufwand und Kosten. - Gruppensäugen führt bei Sauen zu erhöhter Aktivität sowie zu spezifischen Verhaltensanpassungen. Leistungseinbußen konnten weder für Sauen noch für Ferkel dokumentiert werden. „Gruppensäugen“ führt zu einem höheren Arbeitszeitbedarf und steigenden Baukosten. - Der Liegebereich für Aufzuchtferkel ist in vielen Betrieben nicht optimal und durch z. T. einfache Maßnahmen (Abdichten des Liegenestes, Wärmedämmung des Bodens, Bodenheizung, Anbringen einer weiteren Wärmequelle) für die Tiere zu verbessern

    Comparison of the Antiseptic Efficacy of Tissue-Tolerable Plasma and an Octenidine Hydrochloride-Based Wound Antiseptic on Human Skin

    Colonization and infection of wounds represent a major reason for the impairment of tissue repair. Recently, it has been reported that tissue-tolerable plasma (TTP) is highly efficient in the reduction of the bacterial load of the skin. In the present study, the antiseptic efficacy of TTP was compared to that of octenidine hydrochloride with 2-phenoxyethanol. Both antiseptic methods proved to be highly efficient. Cutaneous treatment of the skin with octenidine hydrochloride and 2-phenoxyethanol leads to a 99% elimination of the bacteria, and 74% elimination is achieved by TTP treatment. Technical challenges with an early prototype TTP device could be held responsible for the slightly reduced antiseptic properties of TTP, compared to a standard antiseptic solution, since the manual treatment of the skin surface with a small beam of the TTP device might have led to an incomplete coverage of the treated area

    Grooming coercion and the post-conflict trading of social services in wild Barbary macaques

    In animal and human societies, social services such as protection from predators are often exchanged between group members. The tactics that individuals display to obtain a service depend on its value and on differences between individuals in their capacity to aggressively obtain it. Here we analysed the exchange of valuable social services (i.e. grooming and relationship repair) in the aftermath of a conflict, in wild Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus). The relationship repair function of post-conflict affiliation (i.e. reconciliation) was apparent in the victim but not in the aggressor. Conversely, we found evidence for grooming coercion by the aggressor; when the victim failed to give grooming soon after a conflict they received renewed aggression from the aggressor. We argue that post-conflict affiliation between former opponents can be better described as a trading of social services rather than coercion alone, as both animals obtain some benefits (i.e. grooming for the aggressor and relationship repair for the victim). Our study is the first to test the importance of social coercion in the aftermath of a conflict. Differences in competitive abilities can affect the exchange of services and the occurrence of social coercion in animal societies. This may also help explain the variance between populations and species in their social behaviour and conflict management strategies

    Why have asset price properties changed so little in 200 years

    We first review empirical evidence that asset prices have had episodes of large fluctuations and been inefficient for at least 200 years. We briefly review recent theoretical results as well as the neurological basis of trend following and finally argue that these asset price properties can be attributed to two fundamental mechanisms that have not changed for many centuries: an innate preference for trend following and the collective tendency to exploit as much as possible detectable price arbitrage, which leads to destabilizing feedback loops.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure

    Dynamics of hydration water in deuterated purple membranes explored by neutron scattering

    The function and dynamics of proteins depend on their direct environment, and much evidence has pointed to a strong coupling between water and protein motions. Recently however, neutron scattering measurements on deuterated and natural-abundance purple membrane (PM), hydrated in H2O and D2O, respectively, revealed that membrane and water motions on the ns–ps time scale are not directly coupled below 260 K (Wood et al. in Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104:18049–18054, 2007). In the initial study, samples with a high level of hydration were measured. Here, we have measured the dynamics of PM and water separately, at a low-hydration level corresponding to the first layer of hydration water only. As in the case of the higher hydration samples previously studied, the dynamics of PM and water display different temperature dependencies, with a transition in the hydration water at 200 K not triggering a transition in the membrane at the same temperature. Furthermore, neutron diffraction experiments were carried out to monitor the lamellar spacing of a flash-cooled deuterated PM stack hydrated in H2O as a function of temperature. At 200 K, a sudden decrease in lamellar spacing indicated the onset of long-range translational water diffusion in the second hydration layer as has already been observed on flash-cooled natural-abundance PM stacks hydrated in D2O (Weik et al. in J Mol Biol 275:632–634, 2005), excluding thus a notable isotope effect. Our results reinforce the notion that membrane-protein dynamics may be less strongly coupled to hydration water motions than the dynamics of soluble proteins
