    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Gating the charge state of a single molecule by local electric fields

    Get PDF
The electron acceptor molecule TCNQ is found in either of two distinct integer charge states when embedded into a monolayer of a charge transfer-complex on a gold surface. Scanning tun- neling spectroscopy measurements identify these states through the presence/absence of a zero-bias Kondo resonance. Increasing the (tip-induced) electric field allows us to reversibly induce the ox- idation/reduction of TCNQ species from their anionic or neutral ground state, respectively. We show that the different ground states arise from slight variations in the underlying surface potential, pictured here as the gate of a three-terminal device.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Minecraft and machinima in action: development of creativity in the classroom

    Get PDF
Numerous studies show the positive effects of introducing video games into learning contexts. These instruments help develop 21st century skills, such as creativity, from a dual perspective: i) the students? perspective, since they develop skills and competencies that allow them to find innovative solutions to the challenges posed by games, and to become digital culture producers; and ii) education professionals? perspective, to use these instruments at schools and thereby change the way students learn. Using a sample of 85 first-year secondary school students, this study aims to provide empirical evidence about the development of creativity through the introduction of video games in the classroom. To do this, an eight-week pedagogical workshop was developed, in which the Minecraft video game was introduced in the subject of Technology. To assess the results of the workshop, the participants' creativity was analysed using a pre-test/post-test design through the CREA Test, as well as the evaluation of the students? machinima productions by their teachers. Results show a significant increase in creativity and high scores for machinima productions, highlighting the opportunity to introduce these tools in classrooms in order to develop innovative educational contexts where creative processes and products are the protagonists

Aesthetic dentistry : chromatic appreciation in the clinic and the laboratory

Aesthetic requirement in dentistry is getting more and more important every day. One of its basic principles is the correct selection of colour for the restorations. Colour is a quality which is modulated by a series of factors, environmental and individual, that the clinic must know. Colour measurement by the human eye can induce to an appreciation mistake if it doesn?t follow a correct protocol of light conditions and observation technique, checked by the authors, simplifying it with a practical focusing. Colour measurement instruments have appeared recently, trying to correct the problems of conventional technique

Application of an observation system in the practice of phychomotor circuits in early education

Numerous authors point out the importance of psychomotor education during the early stages as a means to achieve progress in the cognitive, social, aff ective &- emotional, and physical fi elds. In Venezuela, which is the focus of this study, early education teachers have to deal with the reality of lacking offi cial studies that tackle in full this fi eld of knowledge. The current job pretends to off er evidence about the benefi ts of teachers training in the psychomotor area. It describes anobservation study made on two initial stages physical education teachers. The teachers conducted a training course on psychomotor circuits and were observed after this period to check the changes in their teaching practice. The study analyzestheir practice from three perspectives: teacher's attitude, the management of spaces and resources in the psychomotricity room and the communication with the student. An ideographic follow-up and multidimensional design was carried out. To make the observation, an ad hoc estimation scale was created base on theinstrument designed by Camps (2008). The observation was made by 9 teachers from the center during four sessions. The calculated statistics (Cronbachs alpha = 0.8 and CCI= 0.871) guarantee the observation system and the positive evolution in the teaching practice

    Get PDF
Background: The aging of the population in the developed world is an accepted fact. Consequently, the number of patients aged 90 years or over with cutaneous cancer will increase in coming years. Objective: The objective was to determine the nature of skin lesions amenable to dermatologic surgery in patients aged 90 years or more. Methods: We studied the clinical histories of 52 outpatients in their 90 s, who had had histopathologic studies made of their skin tumors when attended in the Hospital General de Alicante (Spain) between January 1999 and July 2002. We studied sex, age, type of tumor, site, associated disorders, regular medications, type of anesthesia, and type of treatment given. Results: The average age of the patients was 92.4 years. Thirty-six patients were women and 16 were men. Altogether the 52 patients had a total of 72 lesions. The most frequent diagnosis was basal cell carcinoma with 36 lesions, followed by 20 squamous cell carcinomas. The overall ratio of basal cell carcinoma to squamous cell carcinoma was 1.8. Patients had an average of 1.5 comorbid medical conditions and were taking an average of 2.3 regular medications. Conclusion: Dermatologists often attend patients aged 90 years or over with nonmelanoma skin cancer. The most important decision is as to what is the best management of these patients

The MTE: managing the professional empowerment of prospective primary teachers

    Get PDF
The knowledge and practices of primary mathematics teacher educators in the period of initial training have the same impact on prospective primary teachers as teachers’ knowledge does on their students’ learning. The aim of this study is to contribute to characterising educators’ knowledge, particularly with respect to developing their students’ abilities and professional identity. Based on the observation of a training session and an interview, we recorded instances of a primary teacher educator’s knowledge, which we then analysed. The results indicate that not only the construction of professional knowledge, but also the development of teaching abilities and the sense of belonging to a community of teaching practices, become key to the process of professional empowerment of the prospective primary teachers. This study was carried out within the framework of the Research Centre COIDESO at the University of Huelva, and project RTI2018-096547-B-I00, of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of the Government of Spain, as well as the Research Group DESYM (HUM-168), and the MTSK Network, sponsored by the AUIP
