The Asia-Pacific Regional Development Needs and Opportunities: An APAARI Perspective

Statement by William Dar and R. S. Paroda, Chairman and Executive Secretary respectively of the Asia Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutes (APAARI) on the priorities, and opportunities for collaborative agricultural research in Asia and the Pacific. The document was prepared for the first meeting of the Global Forum on Agricultural Research held at CGIAR International Centers Week, October-November 1996. It was circulated as an input to the GFAR discussions leading to a Declaration and Action Plan for Global Partnerships in Agricultural Research

A brit nemzetbiztonság rövid ismertetője – felépítése és kihívásai

Dolgozatomban az Egyesült Királyság nemzetbiztonságát kívánom górcső alá venni. A megadott hazai irodalom vonatkozó részeinek áttekintésén túl is igyekeztem elmélyülni a szakirodalomban, feltérképezni a vonatkozó publikációkat, a brit jogforrásokat és pontosabb, mélyebb rálátást nyerni a brit nemzetbiztonság jelen helyzetéről, felépítéséről és kihívásairól. Akaratlanul is, mintegy mellékvonalként került elő a brit viszonyoknak a hazai szabályozással való alkalmankénti összevetése. Szomorú aktualitást ad az elemzésnek a február óta zajló ukrajnai háború, hiszen a szenvedés nyilvánvaló csökkentése iránti igény mellett a háborús helyzet több szempontból is rávilágít a nemzetbiztonsági szolgálatok szerepére, azok fontosságára, a megelőzést, a válságkezelést és annak utóhatását tekintve is. Nagy-Britanniának az ukrán háború – egy totális nukleáris konfliktust leszámítva – kevesebb bonyodalmat okoz,mint a nála keletebbre elhelyezkedő NATO-partnerállamoknak. A szigetország alapvetően más jellegű problémákkal néz szembe. Ezek között szerepel a nagy létszámú muszlim és más vallású közösségek integrációja, a volt gyarmatbirodalomból máig nagy számban a szigetekre költöző természetes személyek által generált nemzetbiztonsági kockázatok és tényezők sokasága. Fel kell tenni a kérdést, hogy képesek-e a brit nemzetbiztonsági szolgálatatok e helyzet kezelésére

Proceedings and recommendations of the National Webinar on Implementation of Access to Plant Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing

A National Webinar on “Implementation of Access to Plant Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing (ABS)” was held on August 27, 2020. The meeting was co-organized by UN Environment Implemented GEF Project, Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Delhi Office, India and the Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources (ISPGR) and was attended by 200 stakeholders from academia, policy, management, farmers and private sector. Reorienting Indian Agriculture: Challenges and Opportunities

This book covers various aspects of Indian agriculture. It consists of 32 chapters that are presented in 12 parts with the following headings: agricultural scenario; revolutions in agriculture; reorienting agricultural research for innovation; improving productivity and production; harnessing agricultural biotechnology; managing plant genetic resources; the role and growth of the seed sector; integrated natural resource management; impact of climate change; innovation in extension; the role of women and youth; and policy reforms for accelerated growth

In India, over the years, the new cropping systems have become predominant in view of their higher productivity as well as income for farmers. Examples are rice-wheat cropping system in the north, groundnut in Gujarat, sugarcane in the north, chickpea in southern states, arhar in the north-western states, soybean in Madhya Pradesh and adjoining states, and winter maize in Bihar. Unfortunately, most of these systems require diversification for greater sustainability and conservation of natural resources. Time is ripe now to bring in needed reforms in the existing cropping systems that are more scientifically based and more suited to varying agro-climatic conditions. The possibilities of future crop diversification that can increase farmers’ production as well as income and also ensure conservation agriculture through sustainable intensification are described in this commentary. There is a need for long term planning and development of various strategies for crop diversification in the best national interest
