    Maritime archaeology in the Mediterranean

    The archaeological study of the Mediterranean sea and its coasts is, for the most part, thought of as underwater archaeology, and the history of maritime archaeology in the Mediterranean has conventionally been conceived as the story of underwater exploration. However, the discipline of archaeology as a whole has continued to develop, and the concern with conceptual issues which has characterized much archaeological scholarship in recent years is having an effect on the study of cultural remains found, not just on land, but in the sea as well. This paper will start with a brief review of the history of maritime archaeology in the Mediterranean region, and proceed to consider some of the new approaches which promise to deliver stimulating insights into the function of the sea and the role of seafarers during prehistoric and historic times.peer-reviewe

    Spelling ability influences early letter encoding during reading: Evidence from return-sweep eye movements.

    In recent years, there has been an increase in research concerning individual differences in readers’ eye movements. However, this body of work is almost exclusively concerned with the reading of single-line texts. While spelling and reading ability have been reported to influence saccade targeting and fixation times during intra-line reading, where upcoming words are available for parafoveal processing, it is unclear how these variables impact fixations adjacent to return-sweeps. We, therefore, examined the influence of spelling and reading ability on return-sweep and corrective saccade parameters for 120 participants engaged in multiline text reading. Less skilled readers and spellers tended to launch their return-sweeps closer to the end of the line, prefer a viewing location closer to the start of the next, and made more return-sweep undershoot errors. We additionally report several skillrelated differences in readers’ fixation durations across multiline texts. Reading ability influenced all fixations except those resulting from return-sweep error. In contrast, spelling ability influenced only those fixations following accurate return-sweeps— where parafoveal processing was not possible prior to fixation. This stands in contrasts to an established body of work where fixation durations are related to reading but not spelling ability. These results indicate that lexical quality shapes the rate at which readers access meaning from the text by enhancing early letter encoding, and influences saccade targeting even in the absence of parafoveal target information

    Insulin-like growth factor-1 induces hyperproliferation of PKD1 cystic cells via a Ras/Raf dependent signalling pathway

    Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) largely results from mutations in the PKD1 gene leading to hyperproliferation of renal tubular epithelial cells and consequent cyst formation. Rodent models of PKD suggest that the multifunctional hormone insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) could play a pathogenic role in renal cyst formation. In order to test this possibility, conditionally immortalized renal epithelial cells were prepared from normal individuals and from ADPKD patients with known germline mutations in PKD1. All patient cell lines had a decreased or absence of polycystin-1 but not polycystin-2. These cells had an increased sensitivity to IGF-1 and to cyclic AMP, which required phosphatidylinositol-3 (PI3)-kinase and the mitogen-activated protein kinase, extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) for enhanced growth. Inhibition of Ras or Raf abolished the stimulated cell proliferation. Our results suggest that haploinsufficiency of polycystin-1 lowers the activation threshold of the Ras/Raf signalling system leading to growth factor-induced hyperproliferation. Inhibition of Ras or Raf activity may be a therapeutic option for decreasing tubular cell proliferation in ADPKD

    Hamiltonian mappings and circle packing phase spaces

    Antioxidant supplementation alleviates DNA damage in boar sperm induced by tropical heat stress

    Seasonal heat stress is known to significantly diminish reproductive performance in pigs, particularly in the tropics, costing the industry millions in annual loses. The boar’s reduced capacity to sweat, non-pendulous scrotum, and widespread use of European breeds in the tropics, makes this species particularly vulnerable to heat stress. While traditionally considered a sow problem, recent mouse studies demonstrate that heat stress-induced sperm DNA damage can result in arrested development and loss of early embryos. Our study investigated the impact of tropical summer heat stress on the quality and DNA integrity of boar sperm, and trialled antioxidant supplementation to alleviate the problem. Data, expressed as mean ± SEM, were analysed by one-way repeated measures ANOVA with pairwise Bonferroni tests. Motility of sperm obtained from n = 5 Large White boars housed in the dry tropics of Townsville, North Queensland, Australia was characterized by Computer-Assisted Sperm Analysis but did not differ between summer, winter or spring (total motility: 71.3 ± 8.1 vs. 90.2 ± 4.2 vs. 70.8 ± 5.5% respectively, P > 0.05; progressive motility: 35.4 ± 7.0 vs. 46.6 ± 4.0 vs. 41.7 ± 2.8% respectively, P > 0.05). Sperm DNA integrity in 20,000 sperm/boar/season, evaluated using TUNEL and flow cytometry, revealed 16-fold more DNA damaged sperm in summer than winter, and nearly 9-fold more than spring (16.1 ± 4.8 vs. 1.0 ± 0.2 vs. 1.9 ± 0.5% respectively, P ≤ 0.05). However, boar feed supplemented with 100g/boar/day of proprietary custom-made antioxidants during summer significantly reduced sperm DNA damage to 9.9 ± 4.5% and 7.2 ± 1.6% (P ≤ 0.05) after 42 and 84 days treatment respectively. Total and progressive motility were not altered by the supplement. In summary, sperm DNA integrity is compromised in boars during summer, suggesting boar factors may contribute to seasonal embryo loss in sows. Moreover, such damage appears undetectable using traditional measures of sperm motility. Antioxidant supplementation during summer appears to mitigate the negative impact of heat stress on sperm DNA integrity

    The shape and behaviour of a granular bed in a rotating drum using Eulerian flow fields obtained from PEPT

    Non-invasive single-particle tracking techniques, such as positron emission particle tracking (PEPT), provide useful information about the behaviour of a representative particle moving in a bulk of similar particles in a rotating drum. The Lagrangian trajectories that they yield can be used to study, for example, particulate diff usion or granular interaction. However, often the Eulerian flow fi elds of the entire granular bed are more useful-- they can be used to study segregation, for instance, or the evolution of the free surface of the bed. In this work, we present a technique for converting Lagrangian trajectories to Eulerian flow fields via a time-weighted residence time distribution (RTD) of the tracked particle. We then perform PEPT experiments on a mono-disperse bed of spherical particles in a cylindrical drum, rotated at various rates, and use the RTD procedure to obtain flow fi elds of the bed. We use these flow fi elds to investigate the e ffect of drum rotational speed on the shape and behaviour of a granular bed in a rotating drum, and the insights gained thereby to defi ne a comprehensive set of surfaces{ such as the bulk free surface{ to divide the bed into regions of distinct granular behaviour. We further defi ne scalar bed features-- such as the centre of circulation of the bed-- that can be used to quantitatively compare the behaviour of granular beds in rotating drums operated under various conditions

    Return sweeps in reading: Processing implications of undersweep-fixations.

    Models of eye-movement control during reading focus on reading single lines of text. However, with multiline texts, return sweeps, which bring fixation from the end of one line to the beginning of the next, occur regularly and influence ~20% of all reading fixations. Our understanding of return sweeps is still limited. One common feature of return sweeps is the prevalence of oculomotor errors. Return sweeps, often initially undershoot the start of the line. Corrective saccades then bring fixation closer to the line start. The fixation occurring between the undershoot and the corrective saccade (undersweep-fixation) has important theoretical implications for the serial nature of lexical processing during reading, as they occur on words ahead of the intended attentional target. Furthermore, since the attentional target of a return sweep will lie far outside the parafovea during the prior fixation, it cannot be lexically preprocessed during this prior fixation. We explore the implications of undersweep-fixations for ongoing processing and models of eye movements during reading by analysing two existing eye-movement data sets of multiline reading

    Citizen science, the active participation of the public in scientific research projects, is a rapidly expanding field in open science and open innovation. It provides an integrated model of public knowledge production and engagement with science. As a growing worldwide phenomenon, it is invigorated by evolving new technologies that connect people easily and effectively with the scientific community. Catalysed by citizens’ wishes to be actively involved in scientific processes, as a result of recent societal trends, it also offers contributions to the rise in tertiary education. In addition, citizen science provides a valuable tool for citizens to play a more active role in sustainable development. This book identifies and explains the role of citizen science within innovation in science and society, and as a vibrant and productive science-policy interface. The scope of this volume is global, geared towards identifying solutions and lessons to be applied across science, practice and policy. The chapters consider the role of citizen science in the context of the wider agenda of open science and open innovation, and discuss progress towards responsible research and innovation, two of the most critical aspects of science today

    Stereoscopic vision in the absence of the lateral occipital cortex

    Both dorsal and ventral cortical visual streams contain neurons sensitive to binocular disparities, but the two streams may underlie different aspects of stereoscopic vision. Here we investigate stereopsis in the neurological patient D.F., whose ventral stream, specifically lateral occipital cortex, has been damaged bilaterally, causing profound visual form agnosia. Despite her severe damage to cortical visual areas, we report that DF's stereo vision is strikingly unimpaired. She is better than many control observers at using binocular disparity to judge whether an isolated object appears near or far, and to resolve ambiguous structure-from-motion. DF is, however, poor at using relative disparity between features at different locations across the visual field. This may stem from a difficulty in identifying the surface boundaries where relative disparity is available. We suggest that the ventral processing stream may play a critical role in enabling healthy observers to extract fine depth information from relative disparities within one surface or between surfaces located in different parts of the visual field
