Indexación: ScieloABSTRACT In this work we present the synthesis and characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), which were structurally and magnetically characterized. The use of iron salts and an organic acid (l-serine or ascorbic acid) as precursors under solvothermal conditions yielded these coated IONPs. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern of FeO-1 and FeO-2 is consistent with hematite (α-Fe2O3) and hematite-maghemite ((α-Fe2O3/γ-Fe2O3) respectively. The TEM analysis permits to estimate an average size of 10 nm for the FeO-1 sample. The magnetic characterization of the samples through the M(H) plots showed a very low coercivity value for both samples, being 53 Oe for FeO-1 and 10 Oe for FeO-2, indicating the very weak ferromagnetic character of the synthesized iron oxide species. Even though both organic acids under solvothermal conditions permit to obtain coated IONPs in one pot reaction, l-serine produces a more narrow-size distribution

Contribution of decision support systems to water management improvement in basins with high evaporation in Mediterranean climates

[EN] The entry into force of Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 23 October 2000 established a new model for the management and protection of surface water and groundwater in Europe. In this sense, a thorough knowledge of the basins is an essential step in achieving this European objective. The utility of integrative decision support systems (DSS) for decision-making in complex systems and multiple objectives allows decision-makers to identify characteristics and improve water management in a basin. In this research, hydrological and water management resource models have been combined, with the assistance of the DSS AQUATOOL, with the aim of deepening the consideration of losses by evaporation of reservoirs for a better design of the basin management rules. The case study treated is an Andalusian basin of the Atlantic zone (Spain). At the same time, different management strategies are analysed based on the optimization of the available resources by means of the conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater. The study was performed with the support of the Ecological Transition Ministry, through the Biodiversity Foundation.Ruíz-Ortíz, V.; García-López, S.; Solera Solera, A.; Paredes Arquiola, J. Antibacterial Properties of Nanoparticles in Dental Restorative Materials. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Get PDF
Background and Objectives: Nanotechnology has become a significant area of research focused mainly on increasing the antibacterial and mechanical properties of dental materials. The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine and quantitatively analyze the current evidence for the addition of different nanoparticles into dental restorative materials, to determine whether their incorporation increases the antibacterial/antimicrobial properties of the materials. Materials and Methods: A literature search was performed in the Pubmed, Scopus, and Embase databases, up to December 2018, following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) guidelines for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Results: A total of 624 papers were identified in the initial search. After screening the texts and applying inclusion criteria, only 11 of these were selected for quantitative analysis. The incorporation of nanoparticles led to a significant increase (p-value < 0.01) in the antibacterial capacity of all the dental materials synthesized in comparison with control materials. Conclusions: The incorporation of nanoparticles into dental restorative materials was a favorable option; the antibacterial activity of nanoparticle-modified dental materials was significantly higher compared with the original unmodified materials, TiO2 nanoparticles providing the greatest benefits. However, the high heterogeneity among the articles reviewed points to the need for further research and the application of standardized research protocols

Is there evidence that emotional reasoning processing underlies emotional disorders in adults? A systematic review

    Get PDF
The prevalence of emotional disorders has increased in recent times. Emotional Reasoning (ER), which is a transdiagnostic process, occurs when feelings, rather than objective evidence, are used as a source of information to make judgements about the valence of a situation. Differences in ER may explain the existence and maintenance of emotional disorders. The objective is to systematically review the role of ER in the occurrence and severity of emotional disorders. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched through: PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus and The Cochrane Library. Search terms were "Emotional Reasoning", "ex-consequentia reasoning", "Affect-as-information"; and "emotional disorders", "anxiety", "depression", "depressive". Nine articles were included. An association was demonstrated between ER and a greater degree of anxious symptomatological severity. In depressive symptomatology, no significant differences were found. One study reported the effect of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy on ER bias, finding no changes after the intervention. Finally, another study evaluated the efficacy of computerised experiential training in reducing ER bias, showing significant differences. There are few studies on ER and its evolution in research has not been uniform over time. Encouragingly, though, research to date suggests that ER is a transdiagnostic process involved in several anxiety disorders. More investigation is needed to dilucidate whether ER also underlies the onset and maintenance of depressive disorders.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

Biofilm accumulation, the appearance of white spot lesions and the development of secondary caries are the main complications in orthodontic patients. A promising approach to fight this situation is the development of adhesive cements with improved antibacterial properties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of improving the antibacterial properties of glass ionomer cements by incorporating different types of antimicrobial compounds without altering their physical and mechanical properties. Different concentrations of silver carbonate (SC) and an inorganic glass with encapsulated silver were added to the glass ionomer cement, as well as chitosan, to achieve synergistic antibacterial activity. Variations in the antibacterial capacity were evaluated using the agar diffusion test; the potential alteration of the physical and mechanical properties of the material was analyzed by the shear bond strength test. SEM characterization and colorimetric evaluation were also conducted. Samples of SC up to 1% and inorganic glass with encapsulated silver up to 5% showed significant improvement in their antibacterial ability without compromising shear strength. The highest antimicrobial activity was observed for Lactobacillus acidophilus, with inhibition zones of 3.8 and 3.1 mm for SC and inorganic glass, respectively. The characterization of the samples did not detect any major structural changes between the different samples. The only group that underwent a noticeable color change was the group with SC. The results show that the incorporation of silver carbonate and inorganic glass with encapsulated silver provided the glass ionomer cement with an antibacterial capacity without compromising the bond strength and without modifying the structure of the material. This research was funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2019-110927RB-I00), Generalitat Valenciana (PROMETEO/2020/029), and Universitat Jaume I (UJI-B2019-37). International audienceIn the present paper a copper(II) phosphovanadate is presented and formulated as [Cu6(phen)6(VVO2)6(PO4)6(VVO2HO)3] (1a). This compound was obtained by hydrothermal synthesis and crystallizes in the triclinic group P-1, with a = 10.6290(5), b = 17.4275(8), c = 23.6151(11) Å; α = 92.888(4)°, β = 98.910(4)° and γ = 91.995(4)°. The leitmotif in (1a) is almost identical to some previously reported ones, viz. [Cu(phen)(VVO2)(PO4)]2[VVO2(OH)] (2); [Cu(phen)(VVO2)(PO4)]2[VIVO2(H2O)] (3) except for the fact that the small cells found in (2)-(3) are tripled in (1a). The reasons driving to these differences are subtle, and reside in the way in which the disorder in some vanadate groups takes place, viz., completely at random in (2)-(3) thus leading to a small "average" cell, while keeping some systematics in (1a) thus needing for a larger motif to take account of its repetition scheme in the crystal. The magnetic unit in the structure of (1a) is defined by a dinuclear system of CuII bonded by a μ2,η1-PO4 bridge. A fit of the corresponding magnetic data of (1a) was done, using the van Vleck equation for two S = ½ centres View the MathML source. The parameters obtained by the fit of the experimental data were g = 2.1 and J = −3.5 cm−1

Changes in the alveolar bone thickness of maxillary incisors after orthodontic treatment involving extractions ? A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Orthodontic treatment involving en-masse retraction of incisors following premolar extractions, may induce morphological alterations of the alveolar bone surrounding the anterior teeth. To assess changes in alveolar bone thickness around the incisors of extraction patients measured with CBCT. An electronic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane Library, using search terms, with no limitation on publication date, up to April 2018. The articles selected for analysis included randomized controlled trials, case-control studies and cohort studies of patients treated with fixed appliances and premolar extractions, which had measured alveolar bone thickness with CBCT before and after treatment. Changes in bone thickness were calculated and the heterogeneity of the studies was assessed using the I2 and Cochran?s Q tests. Of the 136 articles identified in the initial search, 19 were related to the review subject. After removing a further 14 that did not meet the inclusion criteria, 5 articles were selected for analysis. All five were retrospective studies of medium quality. The main changes in alveolar bone thickness were found in the labial cervical third of the central incisor, presenting increases of 0.4-0.64 mm. On the palatal side the results varied considerably. A significant increase in alveolar bone thickness occurs in the labial cervical third of the central incisor. These changes may be influenced by incisor position and inclination, the orthodontic technique and mechanics employed, the timing of the final CBCT scan and the bone remodeling capacity during en-masse retraction
