    Estimators based on sample quantiles using (h,phi)-entropy measures

    A point estimation procedure based on the maximum entropy principle for (h, phi) entropies is proposed using sample quantiles. These estimators are efficient and asymptotically normal under standard regularity conditions. A test for goodness-of-fit is constructed, being the corresponding statistic asymptotically distributed chi-squared. These results generalize the results obtained in [1]

    A survey on zoonotic helminths in farmed fish to evaluate the safety of Italian aquaculture products

    Introduction: Several zoonotic helminths can be transmitted to humans by consumption of raw, undercooked, marinated or cold smoked fish products, representing a relevant public health concern. Although up to now in Italy the presence of zoonotic helminths has been documented only in wild fish populations, extensive epidemiological surveys are needed in order to assess the possible zoonotic risks linked to consumption of national aquaculture products. At this purpose, a wide parasitological survey has being undertaken on rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (RBT), gilthead seabream Sparus aurata (GSB) and European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax (ESB) farmed in Italy. Methodology: From spring 2016 to spring 2017 a total of 2347 fish have been examined. In particular, 738 RBT from 4 Italian freshwater trout farms (two farms located in the area endemic for diphyllobothriasis in Northwestern Italy, 1 in the area endemic for opisthorchiasis in Central Italy and 1 in a highly productive area of Northeastern Italy) were subjected to methods aimed to search for larval stages of diphyllobothriid cestodes (visual inspection and candling) and opisthorchiid digeneans (muscular compression/artificial digestion followed by microscopic examination). Furthermore, 781 GSB and 828 ESB from 4 marine farms (3 cage systems and 1 inland farm located in Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas) were examined for anisakid larvae by UV-press method and artificial digestion. A seasonal periodicity has been applied, sampling 65 specimens/fish species/farm/season in order to reach a statistically significant amount of fish at the end of the survey (258 fish/farm). Results: No zoonotic parasites have been found in all the examined fish at the level of confidence of 99% with a margin of error of 5%. Conclusions: The results so far obtained during this survey are encouraging and seem to confirm that the risks linked to zoonotic helminths in Italian aquacultured fish species are null or negligible, when good farming practices are applied along the production chain

It can be a complex procedure requiring a deep knowledge of the bronchial artery anatomy including the possible bronchial anastomoses.     Improving ANAIS-112 sensitivity to DAMA/LIBRA signal with machine learning techniques

    Abstract The DAMA/LIBRA observation of an annual modulation in the detection rate compatible with that expected for dark matter particles from the galactic halo has accumulated evidence for more than twenty years. It is the only hint of a direct detection of the elusive dark matter, but it is in strong tension with the negative results of other very sensitive experiments, requiring ad-hoc scenarios to reconcile all the present experimental results. Testing the DAMA/LIBRA result using the same target material, NaI(Tl), removes the dependence on the particle and halo models and is the goal of the ANAIS-112 experiment, taking data at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory in Spain since August 2017 with 112.5 kg of NaI(Tl). At very low energies, the detection rate is dominated by non-bulk scintillation events and careful event selection is mandatory. This article summarizes the efforts devoted to better characterize and filter this contribution in ANAIS-112 data using a boosted decision tree (BDT), trained for this goal with high efficiency. We report on the selection of the training populations, the procedure to determine the optimal cut on the BDT parameter, the estimate of the efficiencies for the selection of bulk scintillation in the region of interest (ROI), and the evaluation of the performance of this analysis with respect to the previous filtering. The improvement achieved in background rejection in the ROI, but moreover, the increase in detection efficiency, push the ANAIS-112 sensitivity to test the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation result beyond 3σ with three-year exposure, being possible to reach 5σ by extending the data taking for a few more years than the scheduled 5 years which were due in August 2022

    Phylogeographic and genome-wide investigations of Vietnam ethnic groups reveal signatures of complex historical demographic movements

    The territory of present-day Vietnam was the cradle of one of the world’s earliest civilizations, and one of the first world regions to develop agriculture. We analyzed the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) complete control region of six ethnic groups and the mitogenomes from Vietnamese in The 1000 Genomes Project (1000G). Genome-wide data from 1000G (~55k SNPs) were also investigated to explore different demographic scenarios. All Vietnamese carry South East Asian (SEA) haplotypes, which show a moderate geographic and ethnic stratification, with the Mong constituting the most distinctive group. Two new mtDNA clades (M7b1a1f1 and F1f1) point to historical gene flow between the Vietnamese and other neighboring countries. Bayesian-based inferences indicate a time-deep and continuous population growth of Vietnamese, although with some exceptions. The dramatic population decrease experienced by the Cham 700 years ago (ya) fits well with the Nam tiến (“southern expansion”) southwards from their original heartland in the Red River Delta. Autosomal SNPs consistently point to important historical gene flow within mainland SEA, and add support to a main admixture event occurring between Chinese and a southern Asian ancestral composite (mainly represented by the Malay).     The TELE-DD project on treatment nonadherence in the population with type 2 diabetes and comorbid depression

    Diabetic patients have increased depression rates, diminished quality of life, and higher death rates due to depression comorbidity or diabetes complications. Treatment adherence (TA) and the maintenance of an adequate and competent self-care are crucial factors to reach optimal glycaemic control and stable quality of life in these patients. In this report, we present the baseline population analyses in phase I of the TELE-DD project, a three-phased population-based study in 23 Health Centres from the Aragonian Health Service Sector II in Zaragoza, Spain. The objectives of the present report are: (1) to determine the point prevalence of T2D and clinical depression comorbidity and treatment nonadherence; (2) to test if HbA1c and LDL-C, as primary DM outcomes, are related to TA in this population; and (3) to test if these DM primary outcomes are associated with TA independently of shared risk factors for DM and depression, and patients’ health behaviours. A population of 7,271 patients with type-2 diabetes and comorbid clinical depression was investigated for inclusion. Individuals with confirmed diagnoses and drug treatment for both illnesses (n = 3340) were included in the current phase I. A point prevalence of 1.9% was found for the T2D-depression comorbidity. The prevalence of patients nonadherent to treatment for these diseases was 35.4%. Multivariate analyses confirmed that lower diabetes duration, increased yearly PCS visits, HbA1c and LDL-C levels were independently related to treatment nonadherence. These findings informed the development of a telephonic monitoring platform for treatment of nonadherence for people with diabetes and comorbid depression and further trial, cost-effectiveness, and prognostic studies (phases II and III)

    The title compound, C19H30O4, is an androstan-17-one derivative synthesized from the dehydro­epiandrosterone through a sequential addition of an oxidant, followed by a trans-diaxial opening of the epoxide generated, with Bi(OTf)3 (OTf is trifluoro­methane­sulfonate). The six-membered rings have a slightly flattened chair conformation, while the five-membered ring adopts a 14-α envelope conformation. All rings are trans fused. In the crystal, the mol­ecules are connected by O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds involving the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, forming a three-dimensional network. A quantum mechanical ab initio Roothan Hartree–Fock calculation of the free mol­ecule gives bond lengths, valency angles and ring torsion angles of the free molecule at equilibrium geometry (energy minimum) close to the experimental values

    Expression of insulin-like growth factor I by activated hepatic stellate cells reduces fibrogenesis and enhances regeneration after liver injury

    BACKGROUND/AIM: Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) express alpha-smooth muscle actin (alphaSMA) and acquire a profibrogenic phenotype upon activation by noxious stimuli. Insulin-like growth I (IGF-I) has been shown to stimulate HSCs proliferation in vitro, but it has been reported to reduce liver damage and fibrogenesis when given to cirrhotic rats. METHODS: The authors used transgenic mice (SMP8-IGF-I) expressing IGF-I under control of alphaSMA promoter to study the influence of IGF-I synthesised by activated HSCs on the recovery from liver injury. RESULTS: The transgene was expressed by HSCs from SMP8-IGF-I mice upon activation in culture and in the livers of these animals after CCl4 challenge. Twenty four hours after administration of CCl4 both transgenic and wild type mice showed similar extensive necrosis and increased levels of serum transaminases. However at 72 hours SMP8-IGF-I mice exhibited lower serum transaminases, reduced hepatic expression of alphaSMA, and improved liver morphology compared with wild type littermates. Remarkably, at this time all eight CCl4 treated wild type mice manifested histological signs of liver necrosis that was severe in six of them, while six out of eight transgenic animals had virtually no necrosis. In SMP8-IGF-I mice robust DNA synthesis occurred earlier than in wild type animals and this was associated with enhanced production of HGF and lower TGFbeta1 mRNA expression in the SMP8-IGF-I group. Moreover, Colalpha1(I) mRNA abundance at 72 hours was reduced in SMP8-IGF-I mice compared with wild type controls. CONCLUSIONS: Targeted overexpression of IGF-I by activated HSCs restricts their activation, attenuates fibrogenesis, and accelerates liver regeneration. These effects appear to be mediated in part by upregulation of HGF and downregulation of TGFbeta1. The data indicate that IGF-I can modulate the cytokine response to liver injury facilitating regeneration and reducing fibrosis
