Bringing Optical Communications to the General Public: an Innovative Bachelor Thesis
The United Nations “International year of light 2015” strives to highlight the importance of optical technologies in our everyday lives. Fibre optic communication is one such technology: the growth of internet and its associated services are enabled by the vast transmission bandwidth provided by optical networks. However, the general public is not well aware of the optical and electronic fundamentals of the underlying transmission systems. Here we present the development of a bachelor thesis in Telecommunication Engineering in which a small-scale fibre-optic link is built and the electronics required to transmit music over this link are implemented. The resulting system demonstrates, in a very intuitive way, how information is transmitted over an optical fibre.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

William Stepney's Spanish schoole-maister as transmission of Spanish culture and language in late 16th- and early 17th-century England
Percyvall y A dictionarie in Spanish and English (1599) de John Minsheu; y un análisis
Teleological structure of scientific and mathematical education
One of the main educational objectives in the current Spanish curricula is to develop mathematical and
scientific competences, understood as the set of skills and abilities needed to apply Mathematics and
Science in situations where are required. This is therefore closely related, on one hand, to the
functionality of the knowledge, in the sense of its usefulness in problem solving and in mathematical
and science modeling problems. And, on the other hand, is related to the understanding of disciplinary
knowledge, a cognitive phenomenon that enables and gives competence to the individual to elaborate
contextualized and accurate answers. These answers involve the use of mathematical and scientific
knowledge in some of the categories of their phenomenological and epistemological dimensions. For
this reason, in this work we carry out a theoretical and reflexive analysis that tries to determine which
aspects of the Mathematics and Science Education should be promoted in order to optimize the
formative dimension of an individual in these disciplines. This dimension, frequently forgotten in
learning and teaching processes, turns out to be, in conjunction with the functional and instrumental
dimensions, necessary to acquire the appropriate knowledge in Mathematics and Science that will
enable future citizens to permanently adapt to the environment and eventually transform it positively.
The results of the analysis show the components of this dimension that should be prioritized in the
Science and Mathematics Education: the intellectual autonomy, understood as the ability to think for
ourselves and to put in use our abilities and skills to generate information to solve real life problems
and to make the right decisions; the moral autonomy, defined as the capacity to face with real life
problems with ethical implications; and the social autonomy, understood as the aptitude to make
decisions using social abilities and skills.
The street as an artistic space for women: The writer and the street artist
Women have always been in the graffiti world. To a lesser extent than the males but it was indeniable. The same problems that a woman has every day in her work had the writer in her environnment. It was dangerous activity and it was tried to protect in a paternalistic way, the girls that wanted to enter a crew. Always say that woman comes to this discipline thanks to her boyfriends, friends, brothers or drawing partners. Those who entered without help looked at them suspiciously. The woman of the Street Art has it easier. She is freer when it comes to executing a work and not hold onto styles stipulated by discipline. She doesn’t need to go out in a group because she doesn’t practice painting trains. But the machism of some comrades, based on envy, suffer as any woman; many have left Graffiti for Street Art, others continue in spite of everything.
Energy efficiency improvement of hybrid ground coupled HVAC systems from thermal energy generation and storage management
Nowadays, the increasing of the energy consumption is producing serious
changes in the natural environment as the global warming. Around the 40%
of all greenhouse gas emissions in developed countries come from the building
equipments, where approximately 60% are produced by the air conditioning
systems. In this context, ground coupled heat pumps are an attractive solution
as air conditioning systems in commercial buildings due to their higher
efficiency compared with the conventional air to water heat pump. In fact,
the American Environmental Protection Agency recognizes ground coupled
heat pump systems among the most efficient and comfortable systems available
today. Nevertheless, the energy efficiency of the ground coupled heat
pumps could be improve by means a properly management of the di erent
equipments which form them.
The objective of the research of this PhD thesis will be the development
of management strategies in the air conditioning system based on the ground
coupled heat pumps to improve its energy efficiency at the same time that we
keep the thermal comfort in the conditioned areas. The energy management
strategies will be oriented in the three ways: combining of several generation
systems (ground coupled heat pump and air to water heat pump), decoupling
thermal generation from thermal distribution (by means a thermal storage
device) and strategies based on the management of the devices of the system
(by means of continuous regulation of them).
From the results of this research we can obtain two main conclusions.
The rst one is that a properly management of a system composed by a
thermal storage, an air to water heat pump and a ground coupled heat pump
produce an improvement of the energy efficiency around a 40% respect to a
conventional system and around a 18% respect to a geothermal system. The
second main conclusion of this thesis is that a properly management strategy
in continuous regulation of the devices which are part of a ground coupled ..Pardo García, N. (2009). Experimental characterization of the radio channel for systems with large bandwidth and multiple antennas
[ENG] Wireless communications have become essential in our society [Rappaport, 1996], [Parsons, 2000]. Nowadays, people need to be connected everywhere and at any time, and demand faster and enhanced communications every day. New applications requires higher data rates and, therefore, higher bandwidths. On the one hand, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems were proposed as one solution to achieve higher data rates and optimize the use of the spectrum. On the other hand, more recently, systems with an ultra large bandwidth, and particularly Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems, have gained the interest of the scientific community. Such interest is owing to the extremely high data rates offered and its possible coexistence with existing systems due to the its low transmitted power. However, this improvement in mobile communications involves the development and testing of new wireless communications systems. Precise knowledge of the radio channel is an essential issue to design this new devices and, thus, reach such improvement in wireless communications. In general, the modeling of the radio channel can be undertaken in two main ways: Theoretically, where the channel is characterized by means of simulations and theoretical approaches. - Experimentally, where the radio channel is characterized by means of the analysis of measurements carried out in real scenarios. This thesis is mainly focused on the experimental characterization of the radio channel for systems with large bandwidth and multiple antennas (MIMO). However, characterizing experimentally the MIMO wideband channel implies the availability of adequate and accurate channel sounders.
