    From Intricate to Coarse and Back A voxel-based workflow to approximate high-res geometries for digital environmental simulations

    Digital environmental simulations can present a computational bottleneck concerning the complexity of geometry. Therefore, a series of workarounds, ranging from cloud-based solutions to machine learning simulations as surrogate simulations are conventionally applied in practice. Concurrently, contemporary advances in procedural modelling in architecture result in design concepts with high polygon counts. This leads to an everincreasing resolution discrepancy between design and analysis models. Responding to this problem, this research presents a step-by-step approximation workflow for handling and transferring high-resolution geometries between procedural modelling and environmental simulation software. The workflow is intended to allow designers to quickly assess a design’s interaction with environmental parameters such as airflow and solar radiation and further articulate them. A controllable voxelization procedure is applied to approximate the original geometry and therefore reduce the resolution. Controllable in this context refers to the user’s ability to locally adjust the voxel resolution to fit design needs. After export and simulation, 3d results are imported back into the design environment. The colour properties are re-mapped onto the original highresolution geometry following a weighted proximity technique. The developed data transfer pipeline allows designers to integrate environmental analysis during initial design steps, which is essential for accessibility in the design profession. This can help to environmentally inform generative designs as well as to make simulation workflows more accessible when working with a wider range of geometries. In this, it reduces the perceived discrepancy between the concept and simulation model. This eases the use and allows a wider audience of users to develop co-creation processes between computation, architecture, and environment

    Instruction to forget leads to emotional devaluation

    Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate if the interaction between emotion and memory is bidirectional. Specifically we tested if intentional forgetting of words and faces would lead to their subsequent emotional devaluation. Method: In three experiments we combined an item-method directed forgetting paradigm with an emotional evaluation task. In addition, to test the general response bias hypothesis, we manipulated the forget instruction so that participants would associate a positive encoding affect with this condition. Results: We found that intentionally forgotten words and faces were subsequently emotionally devaluated as compared with the to-be-remembered words and faces. Furthermore, this effect was replicated for words when we associated a positive instruction with the forget condition, which supports that the devaluation was memory specific. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the Distractor Devaluation effect previously reported in the attention field can be generalized to memory. This is one the first studies to show an influence of memory processes, namely forgetting, on emotion

    Do patients accurately represent their experiences after hip and knee replacements?

    Background To investigate discrepancies, if any, between the complications that patients report on the patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) questionnaire and what is formally recorded in their medical records. Methodology A retrospective analysis of PROMs-reported complications was performed at a single elective center for all patients who had an elective primary total knee or hip replacement between April 2016 and March 2017. Corresponding patient medical records were then analyzed to correlate the PROMs with any documentation of postoperative complications, which similar to the PROMs data were categorized into wound complications, urinary complications, readmission, and further operative procedures. Results A set of 54 complete patient records were compared to the corresponding PROMs data. The combined overall positive predictive value was 0.47 while the overall negative predictive value was 0.91. Concordance between patients and the medical records was 70.4% for wound complication, 66.7% for urinary complications, 83.3% for readmission, and 96.3% for reoperation. Conclusion PROMs data are becoming increasingly important in auditing and planning healthcare provision. This study highlights a significant level of discrepancy between the PROMs-reported complication rates and those documented in the medical records. There is a visible disparity between patient perception and the medical definition of postoperative complications. Further patient education and empowerment are required in preparation for arthroplasty

    Corrosion is the main mechanism of material loss at the taper junction of large head metal on metal hip replacements

    Abstract Material loss at the head-stem taper junction may contribute to the high early failure rates of stemmed large head metal-on-metal (LH-MOM) hip replacements. We sought to quantify both wear and corrosion and by doing so determine the main mechanism of material loss at the taper. This was a retrospective study of 78 patients having undergone revision of a LH-MOM hip replacement. All relevant clinical data was recorded. Corrosion was assessed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and graded according to a well-published classification system. We then measured the volumetric wear of the bearing and taper surfaces. Evidence of at least mild taper corrosion was seen in 90% cases, with 46% severely corroded. SEM confirmed the presence of corrosion debris, pits and fretting damage. However, volumetric wear of the taper surfaces was significantly lower than that of the bearing surfaces (p = 0.015). Our study supports corrosion as the predominant mechanism of material loss at the taper junction of LH-MOM hip replacements. Although the volume of material loss is low, the ionic products may be more biologically active compared to the particulate debris arising from the bearing surfaces

    Taper wear contributes only a third of the total volumetric material loss in large head metal on metal hip replacement

    Abstract It has been speculated that high wear at the head-stem taper may contribute to the high failure rates reported for stemmed large head metal-on-metal (LH-MOM) hips. In this study of 53 retrieved LH-MOM hip replacements, we sought to determine the relative contributions of the bearing and taper surfaces to the total wear volume. Prior to revision, we recorded the relevant clinical variables, including whole blood cobalt and chromium levels. Volumetric wear of the bearing surfaces was measured using a coordinate measuring machine and of the taper surfaces using a roundness measuring machine. The mean taper wear volume was lower than the combined bearing surface wear volume (p = 0.015). On average the taper contributed 32.9% of the total wear volume, and in only 28% cases was the taper wear volume greater than the bearing surface wear volume. Despite contributing less to the total material loss than the bearing surfaces, the head-stem taper junction remains an important source of implant-derived wear debris. Furthermore, material loss at the taper is likely to involve corrosion and it is possible that the material released may be more biologically active than that from the bearing surface

    Comparative LCA technology improvement opportunities for a 1.5 MW wind turbine in the context of an offshore wind farm

    Wind energy is playing an increasingly important role in the development of cleaner and more efficient energy technologies leading to projections in reliability and performance of future wind turbine designs. This paper presents life cycle assessment (LCA) results of design variations for a 1.5 MW wind turbine due to the potential for advances in technology to improve the performance of a 1.5 MW wind turbine. Five LCAs have been conducted for design variants of a 1.5 MW wind turbine. The objective is to evaluate potential environmental impacts per kilowatt hour of electricity generated for a 114 MW onshore wind farm. Results for the baseline turbine show that higher contributions to impacts were obtained in the categories Ozone Depletion Potential, Marine Aquatic Eco-toxicity Potential, Human Toxicity Potential and Terrestrial Eco-toxicity Potential compared to Technology Improvement Opportunities (TIOs) 1 to 4. Compared to the baseline turbine, TIO 1 showed increased impact contributions to Abiotic Depletion Potential, Acidification Potential, Eutrophication Potential, Global Warming Potential and Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential, and TIO 2 showed an increase in contributions to Abiotic Depletion Potential, Acidification Potential and Global Warming Potential. Additionally, lower contributions to all the environmental categories were observed for TIO 3 while increased contributions towards Abiotic Depletion Potential and Global Warming Potential were noted for TIO 4. A comparative LCA study of wind turbine design variations for a particular power rating has not been explored in the literature. This study presents new insight into the environmental implications related with projected wind turbine design advancements

    Optimal spare parts management for vessel maintenance scheduling

    Condition-based monitoring is used as part of predictive maintenance to collect real-time information on the healthy status of a vessel engine, which allows for a more accurate estimation of the remaining life of an engine or its parts, as well as providing a warning for a potential failure of an engine part. An engine failure results in delays and down-times in the voyage of a vessel, which translates into additional cost and penalties. This paper studies a spare part management problem for maintenance scheduling of a vessel operating on a given route that is defined by a sequence of port visits. When a warning on part failure is received, the problem decides when and to which port each part should be ordered, where the latter is also the location at which the maintenance operation would be performed. The paper describes a mathematical programming model of the problem, as well as a shortest path dynamic programming formulation for a single part which solves the problem in polynomial time complexity. Simulation results are presented in which the models are tested under different scenarios
