Methodological insights into the study of centuriated field systems: a landscape archaeology perspective

    Get PDF
The morphological identification of centuriated field systems has been characterised from its beginnings by methodological approaches mainly sustained on actus-based modular relationships and orientations. Many researchers dedicated to the identification of centuriations have only performed archaemorphological analyses based on interpretation of aerial photographs and maps without field verification or any other proof of the validity of their hypothsis. Their restitutions consisted of a set of lines over a map or an aerial photograph which often lacked precision and spatial resolution. This article argues that the study of centuriations should transform its aims, scope and methodologies to be converged with those presented by diachronic transdisciplinary landscape archaeology. In order to do so a series of integrated methodological approaches are exposed and their applicability discussed

Pitch production during the Roman period: an intensive mountain industry for a globalised economy?

    Get PDF
The authors’ research project in the Pyrenees mountains has located and excavated Roman kilns for producing pitch from pine resin. Their investigations reveal a whole sustainable industry, integrated into the local environmental cycle, supplying pitch to the Roman network and charcoal as a spin-off to the local iron extractors. The paper makes a strong case for applying combined archaeological and palaeoenvironmental investigations in upland areas, showing mountain industries to have been not so much marginal and pastoral as key players in the economy of the Roman period and beyond it into the seventh century AD

The Roman centuriated landscape: conception, genesis and development as inferred from the Ager Tarraconensis case

    Get PDF
Although centuriation was only one system of Roman land division, its impact on the landscape and its visibility in modern field arrangements make it the most commonly recognized expression of Roman landscapes. Centuriated grid systems are usually analyzed from a materialistic point of view and consequently regarded as an assertion of Roman dominance over conquered territories. In this sense, their productive function is clear. The hinterland of Tarraco (the ancient capital of the Roman province of Tarraconensis) offers one of the most clearly documented examples of multiple-grid centuriated systems. From 2006 to 2010, the Landscape Archaeology Research Group (GIAP) of the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology employed a wide array of digital and field methodologies at Tarraco to record the traces of centuriated land divisions and their Roman origin. Most importantly, these methods have allowed research to move beyond pure description of the traces to explore the concepts and ideas behind the making of a centuriated landscape. By using Tarraco as a case study, this article shows how centuriation was not only a system for dividing the land but also a conceptual appropriation of the landscape based on a strong mythical and religious backgroun

The area of study, located in the Vallès basin, near the city of Barcelona, has undergone an important urbanization process in the last two decades. This fact restrains the retrieving of archaeological data and the development of archaeological surveys and fieldwalking. In this sense, landscape research in urban or peri-urban areas implies important methodological constraints. However, several reports from rescue excavations are available. They are a very useful source for territorial research. The particular topography of the area must also be taken into account. It is characterized by soft slopes resulting from a differentiated seasonal rainfall. Archaeomorphological analysis has been therefore reconsidered in order to adapt its methods and techniques to this particular environment. This paper presents the results of the digital archaeomorfological analysis which have been correlated with historical and archaeological data in order to allow us to characterize the historical road network and territorial organization from a long-term perspective, together with settlement evolution and landscape dynamics in Roman times. The landscape morphology research has been developed from an intensive work involving photo-interpretation and the study of old maps within a GIS environment. This has been especially important because of major landscape changes in large rural areas. The archaeological data resulting from the research over the last years has also been carefully revised in order to plan the archaeological and archaeomorfological surveys developed in several micro-regional sectors.

Comparison of biochars derived from different types of feedstock and their potential for heavy metal removal in multiple-metal solutions

    Get PDF
Three different types of feedstocks and their biochars were used to remove Cr(III), Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions from a mixture of multiple heavy metals. The effect of the initial concentration of heavy metals in solution has been analysed, and kinetics modelling and a comparison of the adsorption capacity of such materials have been performed to elucidate the possible adsorption mechanisms. The results show that the adsorption capacity is dependent on the type of feedstock and on the pyrolysis conditions. The adsorption capacity of the biomass types is ranked as follows: FO (from sewage sludge)» LO > ZO (both from agriculture biomass waste)» CO (from wood biomass waste). Biochars, which are the product of the pyrolysis of feedstocks, clearly improve the adsorption efficiency in the case of those derived from wood and agricultural biomasses. Complexation and cation exchange have been found to be the two main adsorption mechanisms in systems containing multiple heavy metals, with cation exchange being the most significant. The pore structure of biomass/biochar cannot be neglected when investigating the adsorption mechanism of each material. All the disposal biomasses presented here are good alternatives for heavy metal removal from wastewaters

Influence of a mixture of metals on PAHs biodegradation processes in soils

    Get PDF
In order to assess the effect of mixed pollutants, the influence of different concentration levels of a mixture of metals (Cr, Co, Pb, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn) on the biodegradation of some PAHs (phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene) in soil samples was evaluated. To do so, groups of microcosms of a natural soil fromthe region of Sabadell (Barcelona, Spain)were prepared as a reproduction of the native environment at laboratory scale, under controlled conditions. Mixtures of PAHs and metals were carefully selected, according to soil characterization and microbiological growth preliminary assays, and were added to microcosms. These microcosms were analyzed at various times, along two months, to obtain PAHs dissipation time-courses. A first-order kinetic modelling allowed obtaining different rate constants and DT50 values as a function of the metal levels introduced in microcosms. As a general observation, the higher the concentration of metals, the lower the biodegradation of PAHs of 3–4 rings (phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene). On the other hand, no important effect on the biodegradation of higher molecular weight PAHs (benzo[b]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene) was observed at the different concentration levels of metals testedPostprint (author's final draft

This work offers an overview about the studies conducted by the Grup d'Investigació en Arqueologia del Paisatge (GIAP) in the Eastern Pyrenees high mountain areas during the last ten years. From a multidisciplinary approach within the framework of landscape archaeology, the results obtained make it possible to break with the traditional vision of these mountainous areas in antiquity, showing their intense exploitation and strong anthropization, already beginning in the Neolithic period

Global Retinoblastoma Presentation and Analysis by National Income Level

Importance: Early diagnosis of retinoblastoma, the most common intraocular cancer, can save both a child's life and vision. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that many children across the world are diagnosed late. To our knowledge, the clinical presentation of retinoblastoma has never been assessed on a global scale. Objectives: To report the retinoblastoma stage at diagnosis in patients across the world during a single year, to investigate associations between clinical variables and national income level, and to investigate risk factors for advanced disease at diagnosis. Design, Setting, and Participants: A total of 278 retinoblastoma treatment centers were recruited from June 2017 through December 2018 to participate in a cross-sectional analysis of treatment-naive patients with retinoblastoma who were diagnosed in 2017. Main Outcomes and Measures: Age at presentation, proportion of familial history of retinoblastoma, and tumor stage and metastasis. Results: The cohort included 4351 new patients from 153 countries; the median age at diagnosis was 30.5 (interquartile range, 18.3-45.9) months, and 1976 patients (45.4%) were female. Most patients (n = 3685 [84.7%]) were from low- A nd middle-income countries (LMICs). Globally, the most common indication for referral was leukocoria (n = 2638 [62.8%]), followed by strabismus (n = 429 [10.2%]) and proptosis (n = 309 [7.4%]). Patients from high-income countries (HICs) were diagnosed at a median age of 14.1 months, with 656 of 666 (98.5%) patients having intraocular retinoblastoma and 2 (0.3%) having metastasis. Patients from low-income countries were diagnosed at a median age of 30.5 months, with 256 of 521 (49.1%) having extraocular retinoblastoma and 94 of 498 (18.9%) having metastasis. Lower national income level was associated with older presentation age, higher proportion of locally advanced disease and distant metastasis, and smaller proportion of familial history of retinoblastoma. Advanced disease at diagnosis was more common in LMICs even after adjusting for age (odds ratio for low-income countries vs upper-middle-income countries and HICs, 17.92 [95% CI, 12.94-24.80], and for lower-middle-income countries vs upper-middle-income countries and HICs, 5.74 [95% CI, 4.30-7.68]). Conclusions and Relevance: This study is estimated to have included more than half of all new retinoblastoma cases worldwide in 2017. Children from LMICs, where the main global retinoblastoma burden lies, presented at an older age with more advanced disease and demonstrated a smaller proportion of familial history of retinoblastoma, likely because many do not reach a childbearing age. Given that retinoblastoma is curable, these data are concerning and mandate intervention at national and international levels. Further studies are needed to investigate factors, other than age at presentation, that may be associated with advanced disease in LMICs
