A System for Bangla Handwritten Numeral Recognition

To take care of variability involved in the writing style of different individuals, a robust scheme is presented here. The scheme is mainly based on new features obtained from the concept of water overflow from the reservoir as well as topological and structural features of the numerals. The proposed scheme is tested on data collected from different individuals of various background and we obtained an overall recognition accuracy of about 92.8% from 12000 data

An Outbreak of Cholera Associated with an Unprotected Well in Parbatia, Orissa, Eastern India
In November 2003, an outbreak (41 cases; attack rate–4.3%; no deaths) of severe diarrhoea was reported from a village in Orissa, eastern India. Thirteen of these cases were hospitalized. A matched case-control study was conducted to identify the possible exposure variables. Since all wells were heavily chlorinated immediately after the outbreak, water samples were not tested. The cases were managed symptomatically. Descriptive epidemiology suggested clustering of cases around one public well. Vibrio cholerae El Tor O1, serotype Ogawa was isolated from four of six rectal swabs. The water from the public well was associated with the outbreak (matched odds ratio: 12; 95% confidence interval 1.2–44.1). On the basis of these conclusions, access to the well was barred immediately, and it was protected. This investigation highlighted the broader use of field epidemiology methods to implement public-health actions guided by epidemiologic data to control a cholera epidemic

Jet hadrochemistry as a characteristics of jet quenching
Jets produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC are expected to be
strongly modified due to the interaction of the parton shower with the dense
QCD matter. Here, we point out that jet quenching can leave signatures not only
in the longitudinal and transverse jet energy and multiplicity distributions,
but also in the hadrochemical composition of the jet fragments. In particular,
we show that even in the absence of medium effects at or after hadronization,
the medium-modification of the parton shower can result in significant changes
in jet hadrochemistry. We discuss how jet hadrochemistry can be studied within
the high-multiplicity environment of nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, LaTe
Setting a baseline for global urban virome surveillance in sewage
The rapid development of megacities, and their growing connectedness across the world is becoming a distinct driver for emerging disease outbreaks. Early detection of unusual disease emergence and spread should therefore include such cities as part of risk-based surveillance. A catch-all metagenomic sequencing approach of urban sewage could potentially provide an unbiased insight into the dynamics of viral pathogens circulating in a community irrespective of access to care, a potential which already has been proven for the surveillance of poliovirus. Here, we present a detailed characterization of sewage viromes from a snapshot of 81 high density urban areas across the globe, including in-depth assessment of potential biases, as a proof of concept for catch-all viral pathogen surveillance. We show the ability to detect a wide range of viruses and geographical and seasonal differences for specific viral groups. Our findings offer a cross-sectional baseline for further research in viral surveillance from urban sewage samples and place previous studies in a global perspective
Velocity-space sensitivity of the time-of-flight neutron spectrometer at JET
The velocity-space sensitivities of fast-ion diagnostics are often described by so-called weight functions. Recently, we formulated weight functions showing the velocity-space sensitivity of the often dominant beam-target part of neutron energy spectra. These weight functions for neutron emission spectrometry (NES) are independent of the particular NES diagnostic. Here we apply these NES weight functions to the time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR at JET. By taking the instrumental response function of TOFOR into account, we calculate time-of-flight NES weight functions that enable us to directly determine the velocity-space sensitivity of a given part of a measured time-of-flight spectrum from TOFOR
Measurement of prompt hadron production ratios in collisions at 0.9 and 7 TeV
The charged-particle production ratios , , ,
, and are measured with the LHCb detector using of collisions delivered by the LHC at TeV and
at TeV. The measurements are performed as a
function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity . The
production ratios are compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo
generator settings, none of which are able to describe adequately all
observables. The ratio is also considered as a function of rapidity
loss, , and is used to constrain models of

Search for gravitational waves from Scorpius X-1 in the second Advanced LIGO observing run with an improved hidden Markov model
We present results from a semicoherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the low-mass x-ray binary Scorpius X-1, using a hidden Markov model (HMM) to track spin wandering. This search improves on previous HMM-based searches of LIGO data by using an improved frequency domain matched filter, the J-statistic, and by analyzing data from Advanced LIGO's second observing run. In the frequency range searched, from 60 to 650 Hz, we find no evidence of gravitational radiation. At 194.6 Hz, the most sensitive search frequency, we report an upper limit on gravitational wave strain (at 95% confidence) of h095%=3.47×10-25 when marginalizing over source inclination angle. This is the most sensitive search for Scorpius X-1, to date, that is specifically designed to be robust in the presence of spin wandering. © 2019 American Physical Society
