Critical dialogues: slow readings of English literary texts

The reader will find gathered together in this volume a selection of articles and essays that have been separately published over the past three decades as a result of my teaching practice and research activity. In chronological terms, they span a period from 1985 until May 2008. These texts were chosen because they are considered to be representative of the type of work I usually do in my classes, undoubtedly as a result of my own academic background, based on a deliberate and specific form of approach to literary texts, my own choice of English authors and, lastly, my most recent interest in inter-art studies.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologi

Intervenção clínica e preventiva nos comportamentos alimentares: um diálogo entre a psicologia e as ciências da nutrição

A modificação de comportamentos alimentares, ao nível terapêutico e preventivo, é um desafio clínico, que exige ferramentas de várias áreas da saúde, como a psicologia e a nutrição. Para além do trabalho articulado com essas áreas, nomeadamente através da referenciação às consultas de especialidade, surge a necessidade de uma intervenção clínica e comunitária de primeira linha, especialmente nos Cuidados de Saúde Primários. Neste trabalho, tentamos sistematizar informação útil à intervenção, pelo que vamos começar por rever competências de atendimento relevantes, alguns modelos de entrevista motivacional, e faremos ainda uma breve reflexão sobre a natureza da pessoa que faz o pedido de consulta. De seguida, proceder-se-á a uma análise de caso, em que se procura estruturar dois níveis complementares de interpretação: um mais atento a factores gerais e um outro, mais factual, atento aos antecedentes, às consequências e à descrição dos comportamentos problema. Abordaremos ainda questões relacionadas com o contexto em que o indivíduo se move. Passaremos então à análise de programas de intervenção em contexto de grupo, na perspectiva preventiva e terapêutica. Finalmente, trataremos de alguns conceitos relacionados com a adesão terapêutica

«Era uma vez…» o contributo das histórias para a educação pré-escolar

Relatório da Prática Profissional Supervisionada Mestrado em Educação Pré-EscolarO presente relatório surge no seguimento da minha Prática Profissional Supervisionada em contexto educativo, nas valências de Creche e de Jardim-de-Infância. Intitulando-se «Era uma vez…», o contributo das histórias para a Educação Pré-Escolar, proponho-me incidir sobre a importância das histórias neste contexto, sendo que o objetivo é explicitar não só a importância de ler, contar e recontar histórias como também a importância da dinamização das mesmas. A diversidade de recursos e técnicas proporcionam atividades lúdicas e educativas, alargando as representações das crianças, através das várias formas de exploração das histórias, o que proporciona um ambiente securizante e dinâmico. Tendo sempre em conta o desenvolvimento holístico das crianças, e portanto, faixa etária em que se encontra, correlacionam-se intencionalidades com a versatilidade que as histórias/livros podem assumir. Para além disso, as histórias e os livros constituem-se como veículos da criatividade, de valores, de conhecimentos, tendo o seu lugar ao nível das diversas áreas do conhecimento. Expressando-se através de uma abordagem qualitativa, em que são reconhecidas às crianças qualidades, competências e capacidades na construção do seu crescimento, incorpora-se também uma abordagem multidisciplinar, focalizada para o saber-estar, para a expressão e comunicação, e para o conhecimento do mundo.ABSTRACT This report comes from my Supervised Professional Practice in educational context, in the areas of Childcare and Kindergarten . Named «Once upon a time ... », the contribution of stories for Preschool Education, I propose to focus on the importance of the stories in this context, and the goal is to explain not only the importance of reading, telling and retelling stories as well as the importance of their improvement. The diversity of resources and techniques provide recreational and educational activities, extending the representations of children, through different forms of exploration of the stories, which provides a reassuring and dynamic environment. Bearing in mind the holistic development of children, and therefore, the age group they are in, correlate intentions with the versatility that the stories / books can take. In addition, the stories and the books are formed as vehicles of creativity, values, knowledge, and its place across the different areas of knowledge. Expressing itself through a qualitative approach, in which they are recognized to children qualities, skills and abilities in building its growth, it incorporates also a multidisciplinary approach, focused for the civic education, for the expression and communication, and the knowledge of the world

Dendritic Cells in Cord Blood Transplantation: A Review

Dendritic cells (DCs) are a heterogeneous population of antigen-presenting cells derived from hematopoietic progenitors that bridge the transition between the innate and adaptive immune responses, while maintaining self-tolerance and Th1/Th2 homeostasis, by priming other cells in either an immunogenic or tolerogenic direction. Through their role in both innate and adaptive immunity, DCs play a major part in transplant engraftment and rejection and in graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). Preferentially tolerogenic or immunogenic DC subtypes offer targets for immunotherapy, to optimize transplant success rates and prolong disease-free and overall survival. Cord blood DCs are immature and preferentially tolerogenic, due to maternal-fetal tolerance, leading to better graft acceptance and immune reconstitution and explaining the lower incidence and severity of GvHD in CB transplantation, despite donor-host mismatching. Manipulation of DC maturation and cell loading with tumor-antigens can direct antitumor immunity and target minimal residual disease, as demonstrated for acute myeloid leukemia, optimizing the graft-versus-leukemia effect

Extended Skin: Designing Interactive Content for Ubiquitous Computing Materials

Current research is inspired by the impact of digital media on disciplinary division. Sim- ultaneously, recognizes the difficulty of engineering (applied science) to consider the humani- ties as fundamental contributors in the process of making. Steaming from a design perspective, the intersection between art (design) and science, questions if these relations can open per- spectives on the matter of designing within a U.C. context, and fundamentally, introduces the question on how this can be done Furthermore, the motivation for this research arises from considering that innovation in technology is happening in the fields typically identified as engineering. And, despite this, the in-corporation of these inventions in life, considering some discussed exceptions, has not typ- ically been present in the concerns of design action and methods. Therefore, the challenge of current research is to contribute to the realm of ubiquitous computing, routed by design, to some degree aiming to contribute to the field. A deeper analysis into the subject of U.C., there is the realization that there is minority presence of the humanities in the discussion of U.C. (Dourish and Bell, 2011). Technological disruption offers continuous inspiration for design innovation within U.C. Furthermore, the inquiry labeled as “material turn” contextualizes a dialogue between nano- technology and traditional materials. Nanotechnology is applied to project development, while considering a human centred design approach. This focus is present throughout this disserta- tion. The research proposal describes SuberSkin, as a responsive surface that works as a screen. The exploration of aesthetical effects is focused on visual properties – using high con- trast between natural cork colors, dark and light brown. The proposal is highly experimental, and ultimately, aims to explore potential routes on cork research, linked to that of U.C. Thus, recreating and transforming this material into an intelligent surface. In sum, this thesis discusses displacement of disciplines suggested as having a positive impact in interdisciplinary thought and for future design. Therefore a methodology, "research through techne" is presented that illustrates this intention.A presente pesquisa é inspirada pelo impacto exercido pelos media digitais na divisão disciplinar. Simultaneamente, reconhece a dificuldade da engenharia (ciência aplicada) em considerar as humanidades como contribuintes fundamentais no processo de fazer. Partindo de uma perspectiva de design e da interseção entre arte (design) e ciência, questiona-se se essas relações poderão abrir perspectivas na criação no âmbito da Computação Ubíqua. Fun- damentalmente, introduz a questão de como poderá ser feito. A motivação para esta pesquisa decorre de considerar que a inovação tecnológica acontece nas áreas normalmente identificadas como engenharia. E, apesar disso, a incor- poração dessas invenções na vida, considerando as exceções discutidas, normalmente não está presente nas preocupações, ação e métodos de design. Portanto, o desafio da pesquisa é con- tribuir para o domínio da Computação Ubíqua, orientada pelo design. Uma análise mais pro- funda sobre o tema da Computação Ubiqua, constata que há na sua discussão uma presença minoritária das humanidades (Dourish e Bell, 2011). A disrupção tecnológica oferece inspiração contínua para inovação de design, e o mesmo se aplica no âmbito da Computação Ubíqua. Além disso, a pesquisa intitulada como “material turn” contextualiza um diálogo entre a nanotecnologia e os materiais tradicionais. A nanotecnologia é aplicada ao desenvolvimento de projetos, considerando uma abordagem de design centrada no ser humano. Este foco está presente ao longo desta dissertação. O projecto de pesquisa descreve SuberSkin, uma superfície responsiva. A exploração centra-se nos efeitos estéticos da cortiça, recorrendo a um contraste entre as suas cores natu- rais: castanho escuro e claro. A proposta é experimental e, em última análise, visa explorar potenciais linhas de investigação ligando a cortiça à Computação Ubíqua. E assim, recriar e transformar este material numa superfície inteligente. Em suma, esta tese discute o deslocamento disciplinar como tendo um impacto posi- tivo no pensamento interdisciplinar e no futuro da prática do design. Teacher education towards teacher (and learner) autonomy: what can be learnt from teacher development practices?

Teacher education towards teacher and learner autonomy is an ideological, value-laden choice whose purpose and outcomes need to be continuously scrutinised. The authors present three case studies where pre-service student teacher development practices were investigated, and discuss their value and shortcomings as regards their transformative direction. Our experience shows that criticality and role democratisation are difficult to achieve in this context, and that we need to develop further a scholarship of teacher education, as a way to uncover the forces that impinge upon it and to envision new possibilities that best serve the interests of teacher educators, teachers and learners

La autoestima y la comprensión lectora de los estudiantes del segundo grado de educación primaria de la I.E. Juan Valer Sandoval del distrito de Villa María del Triunfo, 2012

La investigación titulada: “Autoestima y la Comprensión Lectora de los estudiantes del segundo grado de Educación Primaria de la I.E. Juan Valer Sandoval del distrito de Villa María del Triunfo, 2012”, tuvo como problema general ¿Cómo la autoestima se relaciona con los niveles de la comprensión lectora en los alumnos de secundaria de la Institución Educativa Juan Valer Sandoval del distrito de Villa María del Triunfo, 2012 La investigación es de tipo básica, diseño no experimental, descriptivo correlacional, porque se determinó la relación entre las variables de estudio, basándose en el método hipotético deductivo, la población de estudio estuvo conformada por los estudiantes del segundo grado Primaria y con el muestreo no probabilístico de 80 estudiantes; en la recopilación de datos se utilizó dos instrumentos el cuestionario para conocer la autoestima de los alumnos, así mismo para determinar la comprensión lectora se empleó textos – lecturas propuestas donde constan preguntas basadas en los tres grados de comprensión, el análisis de los datos se realizó con la correlación de Spearman de 0.620 y una significancia de p=0.000, se acepta la hipótesis nula y se acepta la hipótesis alterna. Como resultado se demostró que la autoestima se relaciona positivamente en la comprensión lectora, comprobándose que las dimensiones de ambas variables se relacionan positivamente, en los estudiantes del segundo grado de Educación Primaria de la I.E. Juan Valer Sandoval del distrito de Villa María del Triunfo, 2012

Noise: sound reactive fashion

Sound and noise have an important influence in our daily lives. They can positively or negatively change our quality of life. Given the idea that it is harder to ignore what we see, rather than what we hear, the team developed a garment that senses environmental noise and shows it through lighting, to make people aware of the noise around them. The garment chosen was a jacket, with a deliberately provocative design. It is the authors’ intention to study the integration of lighting in garments for more subtle ways of expression, in other context, such as health monitoring, sports or social interaction.FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, project UID/CTM/00264/2013

Teachers’ perception of federal public management within the Belém campus of the Federal Institute for Education, Science and Technology of Pará, Brasil

O contributo dos docentes no processo de avaliação das universidades é de grande importância para elevar a qualificação institucional, promovendo a melhoria do ensino, da investigação, da extensão e da sua gestão. Com o objetivo de avaliar o processo de gestão institucional do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Pará-IFPA, em Belém do Pará, este estudo apresenta os de cento e vinte docentes do IFPA, interferem na continuidade e no aperfeiçoamento do processo de avaliação institucional. Os dados foram recolhidos através de questionários e analisados com recurso a técnicas estatísticas descritivas. De um modo geral, os fatores que facilitam ou dificultam o processo de avaliação foram classificados de Regular a Mau; a qualidade de ensino, as estratégias de avaliação, nomeadamente a definição clara dos critérios e indicadores a serem utilizados, e a qualificação e profissionalização dos docentes foram avaliados de Bom a Regular; e, finalmente, o cumprimento de metas e objetivos e o investimento em novas tecnologias foram classificados entre Regular e Mau. Tendo em conta o conjunto da avaliação, o Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Pará foi avaliado com Regular. Apesar do caráter exploratório do presente estudo, os resultados obtidos permitiram construir uma imagem adequada sobre a avaliação no IFPA e sobre o perfil dos docentes com um desempenho de 20 a 40 horas semanais em sala de aula.Within the process of evaluation of universities, teachers’ perception is an important tool to increase institutional training, promoting the improvement of teaching, research, extension and management. In order to assess the institutional management process of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology Para-IFPA, in Belem, this study presents the results of a study that raised the factors that, in the perception of 120 teachers of IFPA interfere with the continuity and improvement of the institutional evaluation process. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques. Between 70.0% and 22.5 of the evaluation scores featuring between Good and Regular respectively according to the quality of education and 48.4% and 20.4% of the evaluation scores between Regular featuring the Bad the factors that facilitate or hinder the process evaluation, highlighting over 60% the following: awareness of the importance of evaluation, clear definition of the criteria indicators to be used in the evaluation, definition and dissemination of the institution's policies and the renewal of the internal evaluation committee.
