    Subphenotypes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome treated with high-flow oxygen

Subphenotypes in high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO)-treated ARDS patients have not been investigated. Objectives To identify biological subphenotypes in HFNO-treated ARDS patients. Methods Secondary analysis of a prospective multicenter observational study including ARDS patients supported with HFNO. Plasma inflammation markers (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-8, and IL-33 and soluble suppression of tumorigenicity-2 [sST2]) and lung epithelial (receptor for advanced glycation end products [RAGE] and surfactant protein D [SP-D]) and endothelial (angiopoietin-2 [Ang-2]) injury were measured. These biomarkers and bicarbonate were used in K-means cluster analysis to identify subphenotypes. Logistic regression was performed on biomarker combinations to predict clustering. We chose the model with the best AUROC and the lowest number of variables. This model was used to describe the HAIS (High-flow ARDS Inflammatory Subphenotype) score. Results Among 41 HFNO patients, two subphenotypes were identified. Hyperinflammatory subphenotype (n = 17) showed higher biomarker levels than hypoinflammatory (n = 24). Despite similar baseline characteristics, the hyperinflammatory subphenotype had higher 60-day mortality (47 vs 8.3% p = 0.014) and longer ICU length of stay (22.0 days [18.0–30.0] vs 39.5 [25.5–60.0], p = 0.034). The HAIS score, based on IL-8 and sST2, accurately distinguished subphenotypes (AUROC 0.96 [95%CI: 0.90–1.00]). A HAIS score ≄ 7.45 was predictor of hyperinflammatory subphenotype. Conclusion ARDS patients treated with HFNO exhibit two biological subphenotypes that have similar clinical characteristics, but hyperinflammatory patients have worse outcomes.     Mixed carbon nanomaterial/epoxy resin for electrically conductive adhesives

    The increasing complexity of printed circuit boards (PCBs) due to miniaturization, increased the density of electronic components, and demanding thermal management during the assembly triggered the research of innovative solder pastes and electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs). Current commercial ECAs are typically based on epoxy matrices with a high load (>60%) of silver particles, generally in the form of microflakes. The present work reports the production of ECAs based on epoxy/carbon nanomaterials using carbon nanotubes (single and multi-walled) and exfoliated graphite, as well as hybrid compositions, within a range of concentrations. The composites were tested for morphology (dispersion of the conductive nanomaterials), electrical and thermal conductivity, rheological characteristics and deposition on a test PCB. Finally, the ECA’s shelf life was assessed by mixing all the components and conductive nanomaterials, and evaluating the cure of the resin before and after freezing for a time range up to nine months.     Type II compactifications on manifolds with SU(2) x SU(2) structure

    We study compactifications of type II theories on SU(2) x SU(2) structure manifolds to six, five and four spacetime dimensions. We use the framework of generalized geometry to describe the NS-NS sector of such compactifications and derive the structure of their moduli spaces. We show that in contrast to SU(3) x SU(3) structure compactifications, there is no dynamical SU(2) x SU(2) structure interpolating between an SU(2) structure and an identity structure. Furthermore, we formulate type II compactifications on SU(2) x SU(2) structures in the context of exceptional generalized geometry which makes the U-duality group manifest and naturally incorporates the scalar degrees of freedom arising in the Ramond-Ramond sector. Via this formalism we derive the structure of the moduli spaces as it is expected from N=4 supergravity.Comment: 69 pages, v2 published versio

    Generalized Geometry and Partial Supersymmetry Breaking

    This review article consists of two parts. In the first part we use the formalism of (exceptional) generalized geometry to derive the scalar field space of SU(2)xSU(2)-structure compactifications. We show that in contrast to SU(3)xSU(3) structures, there is no dynamical SU(2)xSU(2) structure interpolating between an SU(2) structure and an identity structure. Furthermore, we derive the scalar manifold of the low-energy effective action for consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations as expected from N=4 supergravity. In the second part we then determine the general conditions for the existence of stable Minkowski and AdS N=1 vacua in spontaneously broken gauged N=2 supergravities and construct the general solution under the assumption that two appropriate commuting isometries exist in the hypermultiplet sector. Furthermore, we derive the low-energy effective action below the scale of partial supersymmetry breaking and show that it satisfies the constraints of N=1 supergravity. We then apply the discussion to special quaternionic-Kahler geometries which appear in the low-energy limit of SU(3)xSU(3)-structure compactifications and construct Killing vectors with the right properties.     Nanofluid Based on Glucose‐Derived Carbon Dots Functionalized with [Bmim]Cl for the Next Generation of Smart Windows

    The design of new advanced materials and technologies is essential for the development of smart windows for the next generation of energy‐efficient buildings. Here, it is demonstrated that the functionalization of glucose‐derived carbon dots with 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium chloride results in a self‐standing, water‐soluble, viscous, reusable nanofluid with self‐improving conductivity, thermotropy around 30–40 °C, and ultraviolet blocking ability. Its synthesis is straightforward, clean, fast, and cheap. At 36 °C (hot summer day), a sun‐actuated thermotropic (TT) device incorporating a 95% w/w nanofluid aqueous solution exhibits a transmittance variation (ΔT ) of 9% at 550/1000 nm, which is amplified to 47/31% via the surface plasmon resonance effect. An integrated self‐healing system enabling independent sun‐actuated TT and voltage‐actuated electrochromic (EC) operation is also produced. The low‐energy EC device offers bright hot and dark cold modes (ΔT = 68/64%), excellent cycling stability, unprecedented coloration efficiency values (−1.73 × 106/−1.67 × 106 cm2 C−1 (coloring) and +1.12 × 107/+1.08 × 107 cm2 C−1 (bleaching) at ±2.5 V), and impressive memory effect.     A new 3D positioner for the analytical mapping of non-flat objects under accelerator beams

    We report the development of a 3D positioner for the elemental mapping of non-flat surfaces of heritage targets and its implementation in the external beam of the AGLAE accelerator, a joint research activity of the IPERION-CH European program.The positioner operates in two steps: 1) object surface is digitized using a 3D scanner implemented in the beamline. Surface points are interpolated onto a rectangular grid suitable for beam scanning. 2) Object is scanned under the beam using X/Y/Z stages holding a hexapod robot for rotations. During scanning, target surface is positioned with the Z stage and oriented perpendicular to the beam using hexapod rotations. Areas up to 100 × 100 mm 2 with a resolution of 50 ” m and 30° curvature of can be mapped on objects of 200 mm and 5 kg max.
