    Tuning the resistive switching properties of TiO2-x films

    We study the electrical characteristics of TiO2-x-based resistive switching devices fabricated with different oxygen/argon flow ratio during the oxide thin film sputtering deposition. Upon minute changes in this fabrication parameter, three qualitatively different device characteristics were accessed in the same system, namely, standard bipolar resistive switching, electroforming-free devices, and devices with multi-step breakdown. We propose that small variations in the oxygen/ argon flow ratio result in relevant changes of the oxygen vacancy concentration, which is the key parameter determining the resistive switching behavior. The coexistence of percolative or non-percolative conductive filaments is also discussed. Finally, the hypothesis is verified by means of the temperature dependence of the devices in low resistance state.Fil: Ghenzi, Néstor.     An update of the UK’s test reference year: The implications of a revised climate on building design

In the UK, the Test Reference Years which are in current use were released in 2006 but generally consisted of data from 1983 to 2004. In this work, revised test reference years will be proposed which are based on a new climatic period from 1984 to 2013.     Effect of the horizontal aspect ratio on thermocapillary convection stability in annular pool with surface heat dissipation

    A linear stability analysis of the thermoconvective problem of a thin liquid film contained in an annular domain has been conducted. The influence of the horizontal aspect ratio on the solution has been considered by keeping a fixed external wall while the internal radius of the annular domain was modified. The parameter used in the study, Gammah, has been defined as the ratio of the internal radius to the domain depth. The other control parameter of the study is the Prandtl number ranging from 0.7 to 50, i.e. characteristic of fluids as air to butanol. The study has been performed for different Bond (Bo) regimes ranging from 0.0 for surface tension dominated flows to 67 for buoyancy dominated ones. Three different kind of bifurcations are found in the plane for large Bonds, while for low Bonds only two of them appear. In the case of pure buoyancy or surface tension flows, for every Gammah there exists a Prandtl number such that oscillatory and stationary coexist in a co-dimension two bifurcation point. These transitions show a strong dependency with the Bond number. Indeed, the lower transition disappears for low Bo and the upper one disappears with intermediate Bo values. Furthermore, there is a non-linear dependency of the number of structures of the growing bifurcation with Gammah. These co-dimension two lines show a strong dependency with Bo. Firstly, looking at the frontier between HWI and LR regions, for large Bo numbers, Pr increases with Gammah, while for low Bo the trend is reversed. Additionally, this transition only appears in the extreme Bo cases, for the central values of the considered, no transition is found.     Continuous intestinal infusion of levodopa-carbidopa in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease in Spain: Subanalysis by autonomous community

    Objetivos: Comparar las características de los pacientes con enfermedad de Parkinson avan- zada en tratamiento con infusión intestinal continua de levodopa-carbidopa (IICLC) y los datos de efectividad y seguridad de IICLC entre diferentes comunidades autónomas (CC. AA.). Métodos: Estudio longitudinal observacional y retrospectivo. Se incluyeron 177 pacientes de 11 CC. AA. que iniciaron tratamiento con IICLC entre enero de 2006 y diciembre de 2011. Se compararon las características clínicas y demográficas, las variables de efectividad (cambios en el tiempo OFF, ON con y sin discinesias discapacitantes, cambios en la escala de Hoehn y Yahr y puntuación de la Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale, síntomas no motores e Impresión Clínica Global) y seguridad (acontecimientos adversos), y la tasa de suspensión de IICLC. Resultados: Se hallaron diferencias significativas entre las CC. AA. en diversas variables basa- les: duración de la enfermedad hasta el inicio de IICLC, tiempo OFF (34,9-59,7%) y ON (con o sin discinesias; 2,6-48,0%), Hoehn y Yahr en ON, Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale-III en ON y OFF, presencia de ≥ 4 síntomas motores y dosis de IICLC. En el seguimiento (> 24 meses en 9 de 11 CC. AA.) hubo diferencias significativas en el porcentaje de tiempo OFF, tiempo ON sin discinesias discapacitantes, frecuencia de acontecimientos adversos e Impresión Clínica Global. La tasa de suspensión fue de entre 20-40% en todas las CC. AA., excepto en 2 (78 y 80%). Conclusiones: Este estudio muestra una amplia variabilidad en la selección de los pacientes y en la efectividad y seguridad de IICLC entre las diferentes CC. AA. Podrían influir las caracterís- ticas basales de los pacientes, la disponibilidad de un equipo multidisciplinar y la experiencia clínica.Objectives: To compare the characteristics of patients undergoing treatment with continuous intestinal infusion of levodopa-carbidopa (CIILC) for advanced Parkinson’s disease and the data on the effectiveness and safety of CIILC in the different autonomous communities (AC) of Spain. Methods: A retrospective, longitudinal, observational study was carried out into 177 patients from 11 CAs who underwent CIILC between January 2006 and December 2011. We analysed data on patients’ clinical and demographic characteristics, variables related to effectiveness (chan- ges in off time/on time with or without disabling dyskinesia; changes in Hoehn and Yahr scale and Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale scores; non-motor symptoms; and Clinical Global Impression scale scores) and safety (adverse events), and the rate of CIILC discontinuation. Results: Significant differences were observed between CAs for several baseline variables: duration of disease progression prior to CIILC onset, off time (34.9-59.7%) and on time (2.6- 48.0%; with or without disabling dyskinesia), Hoehn and Yahr score during on time, Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale-III score during both on and off time, presence of ≥ 4 motor symptoms, and CIILC dose. Significant differences were observed during follow-up (> 24 months in 9 of the 11 CAs studied) for the percentage of off time and on time without disabling dys- kinesia, adverse events frequency, and Clinical Global Impression scores. The rate of CIILC discontinuation was between 20-40% in 9 CAs (78 and 80% in remaining 2 CAs). Conclusions: This study reveals a marked variability between CAs in terms of patient selection and CIILC safety and effectiveness. These results may have been influenced by patients’ baseline characteristics, the availability of multidisciplinary teams, and clinical experience

    Criteria for mathematical model selection for satellite vibro-acoustic analysis depending on frequency range

    Satellites and space equipment are exposed to diffuse acoustic fields during the launch process. The use of adequate techniques to model the response to the acoustic loads is a fundamental task during the design and verification phases. Considering the modal density of each element is necessary to identify the correct methodology. In this report selection criteria are presented in order to choose the correct modelling technique depending on the frequency ranges. A model satellite’s response to acoustic loads is presented, determining the modal densities of each component in different frequency ranges. The paper proposes to select the mathematical method in each modal density range and the differences in the response estimation due to the different used techniques. In addition, the methodologies to analyse the intermediate range of the system are discussed. The results are compared with experimental testing data obtained in an experimental modal test

    Genetics and genetic counseling in psychiatry : Results from an opinion survey of professionals and users

    Background: The heritability of several psychiatric disorders is high, and specific at-risk variants have been identified. Therefore, genetic counseling and genetic testing can be prescribed to some psychiatric patients, but these services are not standardized for most of the population. The aims of the study were to gather opinions from mental health professionals and users regarding (a) the genetics of psychiatric disorders and (b) the usefulness of a genetic counseling unit in psychiatry. Methods: The survey was conducted in the province of Tarragona (Spain), and we analyzed 152 valid questionnaires from professionals and 959 from users. Results: Sixty-one percent of professionals strongly believed that psychiatric disorders have a genetic basis, and 59% rated a genetic counseling unit in psychiatry as very or extremely useful. However, only a few professionals reported that patients asked them about the genetics of their diseases (12%) or the possibility of transmitting the disease to offspring (19%). Forty-seven percent of users strongly believed that psychiatric disorders have a genetic basis, 30% responded that they talked with their families about the genetics of their diseases, and 43% were worried about transmitting the disease to offspring; however, only 14% reported that their psychiatrist had talked to them about this topic. Remarkably, 80% of users would consider a genetic counseling unit very or extremely useful. Conclusions: The present study showed that mental health professionals were more aware of the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders than users, and both considered the implementation of a genetic counseling service very useful

    NanoSQUID Magnetometry on Individual As-grown and Annealed Co Nanowires at Variable Temperature

    Performing magnetization studies on individual nanoparticles is a highly demanding task, especially when measurements need to be carried out under large sweeping magnetic fields or variable temperature. Yet, characterization under varying ambient conditions is paramount in order to fully understand the magnetic behavior of these objects, e.g., the formation of nonuniform states or the mechanisms leading to magnetization reversal and thermal stability. This, in turn, is necessary for the integration of magnetic nanoparticles and nanowires into useful devices, e.g., spin-valves, racetrack memories, or magnetic tip probes. Here, we show that nanosuperconducting quantum interference devices based on high critical temperature superconductors are particularly well suited for this task. We have successfully characterized a number of individual Co nanowires grown through focused electron beam induced deposition and subsequently annealed at different temperatures. Magnetization measurements performed under sweeping magnetic fields (up to 100 mT) and variable temperature (1.4-80 K) underscore the intrinsic structural and chemical differences between these nanowires. These point to significant changes in the crystalline structure and the resulting effective magnetic anisotropy of the nanowires, and to the nucleation and subsequent vanishing of antiferromagnetic species within the nanowires annealed at different temperatures

    A comprehensive hydrodynamic analysis of a full-scale oxidation ditch using Population Balance Modelling in CFD simulation

    This work exhibits the importance of the experimental validation when full-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are developed to provide a detailed analysis of the spatial variations in 3D of the fluid flow inside aerated tanks. Single-phase and two-phase CFD models were performed to study the fluid behaviour carefully by means of the velocity profiles and the aeration pattern in a full-scale oxidation ditch. Air hold-up, bubble size distribution and interfacial area density were calculated by polydisperse models where Population Balance Model (PBM) was governed by break-up and coalescence; the free-surface approach allowed the CFD model to describe the three-dimensional effect of bubbly plumes in large scales in detail. Tracer tests were carried out to obtain the flow pattern and the hydraulic distribution of the flow into two wastewater treatment lanes in order to define the boundary conditions for the model correctly. Despite the difficulty of performing velocity measurements of the fluid in 3D, with and without air bubbles, these provided essential information to validate the CFD model. From this analysis, several simulations were performed to improve the hydrodynamics and the operation of the process by relocating the propellers
