Searching for low mass objects around nearby dMe radio stars
Nearby M-dwarfs are best suited for searches of low mass companions. VLBI
phase-referencing observations with sensitive telescopes are able to detect
radio star flux-densities of tenths of mJy as well as to position the star on
the sky with submilliarcsecond precision. We have initiated a long-term
observational program, using EVN telescopes in combination with NASA DSN
dishes, to revisit the kinematics of nearby, single M dwarfs. The precision of
the astrometry allows us to search for possible companions with masses down to
1 Jupiter mass. In this contribution we report preliminary results of the first
observation epochs, in which we could detect some of the radio stars included

Critical behavior in an evolutionary Ultimatum Game
Experimental studies have shown the ubiquity of altruistic behavior in human
societies. The social structure is a fundamental ingredient to understand the
degree of altruism displayed by the members of a society, in contrast to
individual-based features, like for example age or gender, which have been
shown not to be relevant to determine the level of altruistic behavior. We
explore an evolutionary model aiming to delve how altruistic behavior is
affected by social structure. We investigate the dynamics of interacting
individuals playing the Ultimatum Game with their neighbors given by a social
network of interaction. We show that a population self-organizes in a critical
state where the degree of altruism depends on the topology characterizing the
social structure. In general, individuals offering large shares but in turn
accepting large shares, are removed from the population. In heterogeneous
social networks, individuals offering intermediate shares are strongly selected
in contrast to random homogeneous networks where a broad range of offers, below
a critical one, is similarly present in the population.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
PATENTS, R&D AND LAG EFFECTS: EVIDENCE FROM FLEXIBLE METHODS FOR COUNT PANEL DATA ON MANUFACTURING FIRMS
Hausman, Hall and Griliches (1984) and Hall, Griliches and Hausman (1986) investigated whether there was a lag in the patent-R&D relationship for the U.S. manufacturing sector using 1970¿s data. They found that there was little evidence of anything but contemporaneous movement of patents and R&D. We reexamine this important issue employing new longitudinal patent data at the firm level for the U.S. manufacturing sector from 1982 to 1992. To address unique features of the data, we estimate various distributed lag and dynamic multiplicative panel count data models. The paper also develops a new class of count panel data models based on series expansion of the distribution of individual effects. The empirical analyses show that, although results are somewhat sensitive to different estimation methods, the contemporaneous relationship between patenting and R&D expenditures continues to be rather strong, accounting for over 60% of the total R&D elasticity. Regarding the lag structure of the patents-R&D relationship, we do find a significant lag in all empirical specifications. Moreover, the estimated lag effects are higher than have previously been found, suggesting that the contribution of R&D history to current patenting has increased from the 1970¿s to the 1980¿s.Innovative activity, Patents and R&D, Individual effects, count panel data methods.
Low frequency VLBI in space using GAS-Can satellites: Report on the May 1987 JPL Workshop
Summarized are the results of a workshop held at JPL on May 28 and 29, 1987, to study the feasibility of using small, very inexpensive spacecraft for a low-frequency radio interferometer array. Many technical aspects of a mission to produce high angular resolution images of the entire sky at frequencies from 2 to 20 MHz were discussed. The workshop conclusion was that such a mission was scientifically valuable and technically practical. A useful array could be based on six or more satellites no larger than those launched from Get-Away-Special canisters. The cost of each satellite could be $1-2M, and the mass less than 90 kg. Many details require further study, but as this report shows, there is good reason to proceed. No fundamental problems have been discovered involving the use of untraditional, very inexpensive spacecraft for this type of mission
Near-UV Observations of CS29497-030: New Constraints on Neutron-Capture Nucleosynthesis Processes
Employing spectra obtained with the new Keck I HIRES near-UV sensitive
detector, we have performed a comprehensive chemical composition analysis of
the binary blue metal-poor star CS29497-030. Abundances for 29 elements and
upper limits for an additional seven have been derived, concentrating on
elements largely produced via neutron-capture nucleosynthesis. Included in our
analysis are the two elements that define the termination point of the slow
neutron-capture process, lead and bismuth. We determine an extremely high value
of [Pb/Fe] = +3.65 +/- 0.07 (sigma = 0.13) from three features, supporting the
single-feature result obtained in previous studies. We also detect Bi for the
first time in a metal-poor star. Our derived Bi/Pb ratio is in accord with
those predicted from the most recent FRANEC calculations of the slow
neutron-capture process in low-mass AGB stars. We find that the neutron-capture
elemental abundances of CS29497-030 are best explained by an AGB model that
also includes very significant amounts of pre-enrichment of rapid
neutron-capture process material in the protostellar cloud out of which the
CS29497-030 binary system formed. Thus, CS29497-030 is both an ``r+s'' and
``extrinsic AGB'' star. Furthermore, we find that the mass of the AGB model can
be further constrained by the abundance of the light odd-element [Na/Fe] which

Continuing a Chandra Survey of Quasar Radio Jets
We are conducting an X-ray survey of flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) with
extended radio structures. We summarize our results from the first stage of our
survey, then we present findings from its continuation.
We have discovered jet X-ray emission from 12 of our first 20 Chandra
targets, establishing that strong 0.5-7.0 keV emission is a common feature of
FSRQ jets. The X-ray morphology is varied, but in general closely matches the
radio structure until the first sharp radio bend. In the sources with optical
data as well as X-ray detections we rule out simple synchrotron models for
X-ray emission, suggesting these systems may instead be dominated by inverse
Compton (IC) scattering. Fitting models of IC scattering of cosmic microwave
background photons suggests that these jets are aligned within a few degrees of
our line of sight, with bulk Lorentz factors of a few to ten and magnetic
fields a bit stronger than G.
In the weeks prior to this meeting, we have discovered two new X-ray jets at
. One (PKS B1055+201) has a dramatic, -long jet. The other (PKS
B1421-490) appears unremarkable at radio frequencies, but at higher frequencies
the jet is uniquely powerful: its optically-dominated, with jet/core flux

Bolometric technique for high-resolution broadband microwave spectroscopy of ultra-low-loss samples
A novel low temperature bolometric method has been devised and implemented
for high-precision measurements of the microwave surface resistance of small
single-crystal platelet samples having very low absorption, as a continuous
function of frequency. The key to the success of this non-resonant method is
the in-situ use of a normal metal reference sample that calibrates the absolute
rf field strength. The sample temperature can be controlled independently of
the 1.2 K liquid helium bath, allowing for measurements of the temperature
evolution of the absorption. However, the instrument's sensitivity decreases at
higher temperatures, placing a limit on the useful temperature range. Using
this method, the minimum detectable power at 1.3 K is 1.5 pW, corresponding to
a surface resistance sensitivity of 1 for a typical 1

estMOI: estimating multiplicity of infection using parasite deep sequencing data.
Individuals living in endemic areas generally harbour multiple parasite strains. Multiplicity of infection (MOI) can be an indicator of immune status and transmission intensity. It has a potentially confounding effect on a number of population genetic analyses, which often assume isolates are clonal. Polymerase chain reaction-based approaches to estimate MOI can lack sensitivity. For example, in the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, genotyping of the merozoite surface protein (MSP1/2) genes is a standard method for assessing MOI, despite the apparent problem of underestimation. The availability of deep coverage data from massively parallizable sequencing technologies means that MOI can be detected genome wide by considering the abundance of heterozygous genotypes. Here, we present a method to estimate MOI, which considers unique combinations of polymorphisms from sequence reads. The method is implemented within the estMOI software. When applied to clinical P.falciparum isolates from three continents, we find that multiple infections are common, especially in regions with high transmission
The general relativistic infinite plane
Uniform fields are one of the simplest and most pedagogically useful examples
in introductory courses on electrostatics or Newtonian gravity. In general
relativity there have been several proposals as to what constitutes a uniform
field. In this article we examine two metrics that can be considered the
general relativistic version of the infinite plane with finite mass per unit
area. The first metric is the 4D version of the 5D "brane" world models which
are the starting point for many current research papers. The second case is the
cosmological domain wall metric. We examine to what extent these different
metrics match or deviate from our Newtonian intuition about the gravitational
field of an infinite plane. These solutions provide the beginning student in
general relativity both computational practice and conceptual insight into
Einstein's field equations. In addition they do this by introducing the student

Phylogeography of a Tertiary relict plant, Meconopsis cambrica (Papaveraceae), implies the existence of northern refugia for a temperate herb
The perennial herb Meconopsis cambrica, a western European endemic, is the only European species of the otherwise Himalayan genus Meconopsis and has been interpreted as a Tertiary relict species. Using rbcL and ITS sequence variation, we date the split between M. cambrica and its sister clade Papaver s.str. to the Middle to Upper Miocene (12.8 Myr, 6.4–19.2 Myr HPD). Within M. cambrica, cpDNA sequence variation reveals the existence of two groups of populations with a comparable level of genetic variation: a northern group from Great Britain, the Massif Central, the western Pyrenees and the Iberian System, and a southern group from the central and eastern Pyrenees. Populations from the Cantabrian Mountains were placed in both groups. Based on ITS sequence variation, the divergence between these two groups can be dated to 1.5 Myr (0.4–2.8 Myr HPD), and the age of the British populations is estimated as 0.37 Myr (0.0–0.9 Myr HPD). Amplified fragment length polymorphism results confirm the distinctive nature of the populations from Britain, the Massif Central and the central and eastern Pyrenees. These patterns of latitudinal variation of M. cambrica differ from patterns of longitudinal differentiation found in many other temperate species and imply glacial survival of the northern populations in northerly refugia. The primary differentiation into northern and southern cpDNA groups dates to near the onset of the Quaternary and suggests that an ancient phylogeographic pattern has survived through several glacial periods. Our data provide evidence that the species has persisted for a long period with a highly fragmented and probably very localized distribution
