DSP implementation of a quadrature phase shift keying transmitter

    Get PDF
The aim of this project is to develop a DSP implementation of a QPSK transmitter. This transmitter is to process digital signals in real-time and modulate it with sinusoidal and cosinusoidal signals to produce the required QPSK waveform. This thesis is mainly divided into three sections. The first section deals with the theory of modulation. Phase shift keying, in particular binary phase shift keying, is explained in some detail, with references to the generation of quadrature phase shift keying. In the second section, a brief overview of the SIMULINK package from MATLAB is given, as simulations of ideal and nonideal QPSK transmitters are to be conducted using SIMULINK. The first simulation trial will be analysed and compared with the theory of PSK transmitter with an introduction to the Texas Instruments TMS320x542 Digital Signal Processor, and all program codes relating to the generation of BPSK. An implementation of a Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) transmitter will be developed using two TMS320x542 Digital Signal Processors, with all necessary modifications to the DSP codes. The simulation and DSP implementation results are substantiated by comparison with the theory of PSK modulation

Problem No known study had examined the correlation between the Jungian psychological types and spiritual gifts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible correlation between the Jungian psychological types and a selection of 19 spiritual gifts of the New Testament. Method This study employed two instruments to measure the psychological types and 19 spiritual gifts: The Myers-Briggs type Indicator and The Spiritual Gifts Inventory. The data which were computed and analyzed to test 38 null hypotheses were provided by a total of 430 undergraduate, graduate, and seminary students from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, and church members from the Beaverton Seventh-day Adventist Church, Oregon. Findings 1. The older the person, the more likely he will manifest the gifts of evangelism, faith, giving, hospitality, intercession, knowledge, prophecy and teaching. 2. The extraverted-sensing-feeling-judgment (ESFJ) type is more common among those with the gifts of prophecy, pastoring, hospitality, and exhortation. 3. Specifically for males: a. The extraverted-intuitive (EN) type is more common among those with gifts of hospitality, administration, mercy, and apostleship. b. The extraverted-intuitive-thinking-judgment (ENTJ) type is more common among those having gifts of administration, apostleship, and teaching. c. The extraverted-thinking (ET) type is more common among those having the gift of evangelism. d. The extraverted-feeling0judgment (EFJ) type is more common among those having the gift of pastoring. e. The introverted-sensing (IS) type is more common among those with gifts of helps and intercession. f. The intuitive-judgment (NJ) type is more common with the gift of knowledge. g. The thinking-perceptive (TP) type is more common among those having the gift of wisdom. 4. Specifically for females: The extraverted type is more common among those having gifts of exhortation, administration, and faith. Conclusions This study validates that psychological types are relevant predictors for 16 of the 19 spiritual gifts. It infers that gifts of intercession and helps are more practical for one-to-one ministeries. It appears that the higher the self-perception of spiritual maturity, the higher is the perception of spiritual giftedness. Finally, it suggests that only the gift of faith is more common among women, but gifts of administration, apostleship, evangelism, knowledge, patoring, and teaching are more common to men

Determinants of donor behavioral intention among UUM alumni

    Get PDF
Faced with a tight budget, public universities are now looking at alternative ways to raise funds and one possible source is the university alumni. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the attitude of donor behaviour, peer pressure, university brand personality and religiosity with donor behavioural intention of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) alumni. A set of questionnaire, based on the extended theory of planned behaviour model which included religiosity, was distributed to the alumni. The opinions of relevant experts and professors were used to validate the questionnaire. The data were analysed using Smart PLS-a software with graphical user interface for variance-based structural equation modeling (SEM) using the partial least squares (PLS) method. The finding reveals that attitude of donor behaviour, peer pressure; university brand personality and religiosity have a significant positive relationship with donor behavioural intention. The findings are useful for the university management to design strategies according to the behaviour of the alumni which could help increase the donation percentage. The funds raised will enable the university to maintain its reputation and quality. It is suggested that future studies should include alumni from all public universities in Malaysia

Biosorption of Heavy Metal Ions from Industrial Waste Water by Banana Peel Based Biosorbent

The main purpose of this project is to study the potential of using banana peel (BP) as biosorbent in removing heavy metal ions and oil/grease particles from industrial waste water. The study emphasizes on the parameters involved in the preparation phase of the BP adsorbent, such as particle sizes, activating agent, impregnation ratio, carbonization temperature and duration. The dried BP is first grinded into two different particle sizes (0.25mm and 3.00mm), then chemically activated using either zinc chloride or phosphoric acid and carbonized at different sets of temperature and duration into activated carbon, which is a popular type of adsorbent used in industrial waste water treatment. The characterization of BP based activated carbon is carried out using the surface area analyzer (Micromeritics ASAP 2020) and the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) to determine which set of parameters produces the largest surface area estimated using the BET theory (SBET) which is directly related to the effectiveness of that particular adsorbent. Based on the characterization results, sample A20 which is of particle size of 0.25mm, activated using H3PO4 at 1:1 impregnation ratio, carbonized at 400°C for 2 hours, is found to have the largest SBET (256.63m2/g). The total pore volume (VT) of sample A20 is 0.01356cm3/g while its average pore diameter (D) is 0.247nm. The produced BP based activated carbon samples are also tested for their adsorption capacity with typical pollutants found in industrial waste water such as heavy metal ions as well as oil and grease (O&G) particles. Three heavy metal ions are studied in this project, which are copper (Cu2+), zinc (Zn2+) and lead (Pb2+). The adsorption capacity of sample A20 is specifically studied while being compared to another sample A32. Sample A20 yields higher percentage removal for all tested waste water pollutants, which are 81.6% for crude oil particles, 59.6% for Cu2+, 44.33% for Zn2+ and 84.46% for Pb2+

Problem. While much research has been conducted on learning style in the United States, no known empirical study has been done to compare the learning styles of Asian and Caucasian students on Seventh-day Adventist campuses. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in learning-style preferences between a group of Asian students at Southeast Asia Union College in Singapore and Caucasian students at Andrews University in Michigan. Method. This study employed the Productivity Environmental Preference Scale to measure the learning styles of the two groups. The data which were computed and analyzed to test seven null hypotheses were provided by a total of 309 undergraduate students (143 Asiansand 166 Caucasians). Findings. (1) Caucasians appear to have a higher preference for warmth, responsibility, intake, learning in the morning, and mobility. They exhibit a lower preference for auditory and visual learning than the Asians. (2) Males as compared to females have a higher preference for noise, tactile learning experiences, intake, responsibility, and warmth; they have a lower preference for learning in several ways, peer-oriented learning, and persistence. (3) Caucasian males, as compared to Asian males, appear to have a stronger preference for warmth, responsibility, persistence, and intake, and a lower preference for auditory learningand learning in the late morning. (4) Caucasian females have a higher preference for responsibility, warmth, mobility, learning in the morning, and intake than the Asian females; and they have a lower preference for visual and auditory learning experiences. Conclusions. From an analysis of the findings, it appears that culture is a determinant of learning style as Asians are significantly different from Caucasians in their preferences. Sex appears to be a contributing factor as well

Enhanced goal-oriented error assessment and computational strategies in adaptive reduced basis solver for stochastic problems

    Get PDF
This work focuses on providing accurate low-cost approximations of stochastic ¿nite elements simulations in the framework of linear elasticity. In a previous work, an adaptive strategy was introduced as an improved Monte-Carlo method for multi-dimensional large stochastic problems. We provide here a complete analysis of the method including a new enhanced goal-oriented error estimator and estimates of CPU (computational processing unit) cost gain. Technical insights of these two topics are presented in details, and numerical examples show the interest of these new developments.Postprint (author's final draft
