Simultaneous Colonic Pressure Waves in Children and Young Adults with Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders: Artefact or Colonic Physiology?
BACKGROUND: Simultaneous pressure waves (SPW) spanning all recording sites in colonic manometry studies have been described as a potential biomarker of normal gas transit and extrinsic neural reflexes. In pediatric studies utilizing combined antroduodenal and colonic manometry, it was noted that most colonic SPWs appeared to also span all sensors in the gastric and small bowel regions. This suggests that a proportion of colonic SPWs may represent an artefact caused by forces extrinsic to the colon. Our aim was to characterize colonic SPWs and determine how many of these spanned most of the digestive tract. METHODS: In 39 combined high-resolution antroduodenal and colonic manometry traces from 27 pediatric patients, we used our purpose-built software to identify all SPWs that spanned either (i) all recording sites in the digestive tract or (ii) those restricted to the colon. RESULTS: A total of 14,565 SPWs were identified (364 ± 316 SPWs/study), with 14,550 (99.9%) spanning the entire antroduodenal and colonic recording sites. Only 15 SPWs (0.1% of the total) were restricted to the colon (all in one recording). CONCLUSIONS: Based on these findings, we suggest that, in pediatric studies, SPWs should not form part of any diagnostic criteria, as these events appear to be an artefact caused by factors outside the colon (abdominal strain, body motion)
A multicentre trial of voltaren in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis
Voltaren, a compound with analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties, has been compared at two dose levels-25 mg t.d.s. and 50 mg t.d.s. with indomethacin 25 mg t.d.s. and acetylsalicylic acid 1 500 mg t.d.s. Ninety-one patients with definite or classical rheumatoid arthritis took part in this study. The trial was a doubleblind cross-over study, with each medication being given for one week. Patients were washed out for one week prior to the first active treatment. Each patient received only two of the four possible treatments. Voltaren in a dose of 25 mg t.d.s. was found to improve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis to a greater degree than indomethacin or acetylsalicylic acid. Voltaren 50 mg t.d.s. evoked a greater response than acetylsalicylic acid and was at least as efficacious as indomethacin. Voltaren was better tolerated than either indomethacin or acetylsalicylic acid. The incidence of gastro-intestinal side-effects was similar with Voltaren and indomethacin, and half that produced by acetylsalicylic acid. Some evidence of possible drug interaction was found.S. Transplacental innate immune training via maternal microbial exposure: role of XBP1-ERN1 axis in dendritic cell precursor programming
We recently reported that offspring of mice treated during pregnancy with the microbial-derived immunomodulator OM-85 manifest striking resistance to allergic airways inflammation, and localized the potential treatment target to fetal conventional dendritic cell (cDC) progenitors. Here, we profile maternal OM-85 treatment-associated transcriptomic signatures in fetal bone marrow, and identify a series of immunometabolic pathways which provide essential metabolites for accelerated myelopoiesis. Additionally, the cDC progenitor compartment displayed treatment-associated activation of the XBP1-ERN1 signalling axis which has been shown to be crucial for tissue survival of cDC, particularly within the lungs. Our forerunner studies indicate uniquely rapid turnover of airway mucosal cDCs at baseline, with further large-scale upregulation of population dynamics during aeroallergen and/or pathogen challenge. We suggest that enhanced capacity for XBP1-ERN1-dependent cDC survival within the airway mucosal tissue microenvironment may be a crucial element of OM-85-mediated transplacental innate immune training which results in postnatal resistance to airway inflammatory disease
Structural effects in UO thin films irradiated with fission-energy Xe ions
Uranium dioxide thin films have been successfully grown on LSAT (AlLaOSrTa) substrates by reactive magnetron sputtering. Irradiation by 92 MeV Xe ions to simulate fission damage that occurs within nuclear fuels caused microstructural and crystallographic changes. Initially flat and continuous thin films were produced by magnetron sputtering with a root mean square roughness of 0.35 nm determined by AFM. After irradiation, this roughness increased to 60-70 nm, with the films developing discrete microstructural features: small grains (~3 m), along with larger circular (up to 40 m) and linear formations with non-uniform composition according to the SEM, AFM and EDX results. The irradiation caused significant restructuring of the UO films that was manifested in significant filmsubstrate mixing, observed through EDX analysis. Structural effects in UO thin films irradiated with U ions
This work presents the results of a detailed structural characterisation of irradiated and unirradiated single crystal thin films of UO. Thin films of UO were produced by reactive magnetron sputtering onto (0 0 1), (1 1 0) and (1 1 1) single crystal yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) substrates. Half of the samples were irradiated with 110 MeV U ions to fluences of 5 10, 5 10 and 5 10 ions/cm to induce radiation damage, with the remainder kept for reference measurements. It was observed that as-produced UO films adopted the crystallographic orientation of their YSZ substrates. The irradiation fluences used in this study however, were not sufficient to cause any permanent change in the crystalline nature of UO. It has been demonstrated that the effect of epitaxial re-crystallisation of the induced radiation damage can be quantified in terms of kernel average misorientation (KAM) and different crystallographic orientations of UO respond differently to ion irradiation.The irradiation experiment was performed at the Grand AccĂ©lĂ©rateur National dâIons Lourds (GANIL) Caen, France, and supported by the French Network EMIR. The Complete Star Formation History of the Universe
The determination of the star-formation history of the Universe is a key goal
of modern cosmology, as it is crucial to our understanding of how structure in
the Universe forms and evolves. A picture has built up over recent years,
piece-by-piece, by observing young stars in distant galaxies at different times
in the past.
These studies indicated that the stellar birthrate peaked some 8 billion
years ago, and then declined by a factor of around ten to its present value.
Here we report on a new study which obtains the complete star formation history
by analysing the fossil record of the stellar populations of 96545 nearby
galaxies. Broadly, our results support those derived from high-redshift
galaxies elsewhere in the Universe. We find, however, that the peak of star
formation was more recent - around 5 billion years ago. Our study also shows
that the bigger the stellar mass of the galaxy, the earlier the stars were
formed. This striking result indicates a very different formation history for

The social construction of leadership studies: Representations of rigour and relevance in textbooks
Considerations of rigour and relevance rarely acknowledge students, learning or the textbooks many of the academic community use to frame education. Here we explore the construction of meaning around rigour and relevance in four leadership studies textbooks â the two most globally popular leadership textbooks and two recent additions to the field â to explore how these ideas are represented. We read the four texts narratively for structure, purpose, style and application. We further embed the analysis by considering the cultural positioning of the textbook-as-genre within leadership studies as a field more generally. This exploration of the textbook raises critical questions about rigour, relevance and the relationship constructed between them. From this, we argue for a re-commitment to the genuine âtext-bookâ written to engage students in understanding leadership as a continuing conversation between practices, theories and contexts, rather than as a repository of rigorous and/or relevant content that lays claim to represent an objective science of leadership studies
A systematic variation of the stellar initial mass function in early-type galaxies
Much of our knowledge of galaxies comes from analysing the radiation emitted
by their stars. It depends on the stellar initial mass function (IMF)
describing the distribution of stellar masses when the population formed.
Consequently knowledge of the IMF is critical to virtually every aspect of
galaxy evolution. More than half a century after the first IMF determination,
no consensus has emerged on whether it is universal in different galaxies.
Previous studies indicated that the IMF and the dark matter fraction in galaxy
centres cannot be both universal, but they could not break the degeneracy
between the two effects. Only recently indications were found that massive
elliptical galaxies may not have the same IMF as our Milky Way. Here we report
unambiguous evidence for a strong systematic variation of the IMF in early-type
galaxies as a function of their stellar mass-to-light ratio, producing
differences up to a factor of three in mass. This was inferred from detailed
dynamical models of the two-dimensional stellar kinematics for the large
Atlas3D representative sample of nearby early-type galaxies spanning two orders
of magnitude in stellar mass. Our finding indicates that the IMF depends

Designing programs for eliminating canine rabies from islands: Bali, Indonesia as a case study
<p>Background:
Canine rabies is one of the most important and feared zoonotic diseases in the world. In some regions rabies elimination is being successfully coordinated, whereas in others rabies is endemic and continues to spread to uninfected areas. As epidemics emerge, both accepted and contentious control methods are used, as questions remain over the most effective strategy to eliminate rabies. The Indonesian island of Bali was rabies-free until 2008 when an epidemic in domestic dogs began, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people. Here we analyze data from the epidemic and compare the effectiveness of control methods at eliminating rabies.</p>
<p>Methodology/Principal Findings:
Using data from Bali, we estimated the basic reproductive number, R0, of rabies in dogs, to be ~1·2, almost identical to that obtained in tenâfold less dense dog populations and suggesting rabies will not be effectively controlled by reducing dog density. We then developed a model to compare options for mass dog vaccination. Comprehensive high coverage was the single most important factor for achieving elimination, with omission of even small areas (<0.5% of the dog population) jeopardizing success. Parameterizing the model with data from the 2010 and 2011 vaccination campaigns, we show that a comprehensive high coverage campaign in 2012 would likely result in elimination, saving ~550 human lives and ~$15 million in prophylaxis costs over the next ten years.</p>
<p>Conclusions/Significance:
The elimination of rabies from Bali will not be achieved through achievable reductions in dog density. To ensure elimination, concerted high coverage, repeated, mass dog vaccination campaigns are necessary and the cooperation of all regions of the island is critical. Momentum is building towards development of a strategy for the global elimination of canine rabies, and this study offers valuable new insights about the dynamics and control of this disease, with immediate practical relevance.</p>
