The safety of paediatric surgery between COVID-19 surges:an observational study
Despite the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, elective paediatric surgery must continue safely through the first, second and subsequent waves of disease. This study presents outcome data from a children's hospital in north-west England, the region with the highest prevalence of COVID-19 in England. Children and young people undergoing elective surgery isolated within their household for 14 days, then presented for real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus disease-2 (SARS-CoV-2) within 72 h of their procedure (or rapid testing within 24 h in high-risk cases), and completed a screening questionnaire on admission. Planned surgery resumed on 26 May 2020; in the four subsequent weeks, there were 197 patients for emergency and 501 for elective procedures. A total of 488 out of 501 (97.4%) elective admissions proceeded, representing a 2.6% COVID-19-related cancellation rate. There was no difference in the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 among children and young people who had or had not isolated for 14 days (p > 0.99). One out of 685 (0.1%) children who had surgery re-presented to the hospital with symptoms potentially consistent with SARS-CoV-2 within 14 days of surgery. Outcomes were similar to those in the same time period in 2019 for length of stay (p = 1.0); unplanned critical care admissions (p = 0.59); and 14-day hospital re-admission (p = 0.17). However, the current cohort were younger (p = 0.037); of increased complexity (
Inflation and Brane Gases
We investigate a new way of realizing a period of cosmological inflation in
the context of brane gas cosmology. It is argued that a gas of co-dimension one
branes, out of thermal equilibrium with the rest of the matter, has an equation
of state which can - after stabilization of the dilaton - lead to power-law
inflation of the bulk. The most promising implementation of this mechanism
might be in Type IIB superstring theory, with inflation of the three large
spatial dimensions triggered by ``stabilized embedded 2-branes''. Possible
applications and problems with this proposal are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, uses REVTeX, version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Adiabatic and Isocurvature Perturbations for Multifield Generalized Einstein Models
Low energy effective field theories motivated by string theory will likely
contain several scalar moduli fields which will be relevant to early Universe
cosmology. Some of these fields are expected to couple with non-standard
kinetic terms to gravity. In this paper, we study the splitting into adiabatic
and isocurvature perturbations for a model with two scalar fields, one of which
has a non-standard kinetic term in the Einstein-frame action. Such actions can
arise, e.g., in the Pre-Big-Bang and Ekpyrotic scenarios. The presence of a
non-standard kinetic term induces a new coupling between adiabatic and
isocurvature perturbations which is non-vanishing when the potential for the
matter fields is nonzero. This coupling is un-suppressed in the long wavelength
limit and thus can lead to an important transfer of power from the entropy to
the adiabatic mode on super-Hubble scales. We apply the formalism to the case
of a previously found exact solution with an exponential potential and study
the resulting mixing of adiabatic and isocurvature fluctuations in this
example. We also discuss the possible relevance of the extra coupling in the
perturbation equations for the process of generating an adiabatic component of
the fluctuations spectrum from isocurvature perturbations without considering a
later decay of the isocurvature component.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, one equation corrected, typos fixed, conclusions

A search for the decay
We search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay in a data sample of 82 fb collected with the {\sl BABAR}
detector at the PEP-II B-factory. Signal events are selected by examining the
properties of the system recoiling against either a reconstructed hadronic or
semileptonic charged-B decay. Using these two independent samples we obtain a
combined limit of
at the 90% confidence level. In addition, by selecting for pions rather than
kaons, we obtain a limit of using only the hadronic B reconstruction method.Comment: 7 pages, 8 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
High-reflectivity broadband distributed Bragg reflector lattice matched to ZnTe
We report on the realization of a high quality distributed Bragg reflector
with both high and low refractive index layers lattice matched to ZnTe. Our
structure is grown by molecular beam epitaxy and is based on binary compounds
only. The high refractive index layer is made of ZnTe, while the low index
material is made of a short period triple superlattice containing MgSe, MgTe,
and ZnTe. The high refractive index step of Delta_n=0.5 in the structure
results in a broad stopband and the reflectivity coefficient exceeding 99% for
only 15 Bragg pairs.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
EuFeAs under high pressure: an antiferromagnetic bulk superconductor
We report the ac magnetic susceptibility and resistivity
measurements of EuFeAs under high pressure . By observing nearly
100% superconducting shielding and zero resistivity at = 28 kbar, we
establish that -induced superconductivity occurs at ~30 K in
EuFeAs. shows an anomalous nearly linear temperature dependence
from room temperature down to at the same . indicates that
an antiferromagnetic order of Eu moments with ~20 K persists
in the superconducting phase. The temperature dependence of the upper critical
field is also determined.Comment: To appear in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn., Vol. 78 No.
Measurement of the electron energy spectrum and its moments in inclusive B -> Xe nu decays
We report a measurement of the inclusive electron energy spectrum for semileptonic decays of B mesons in a data sample of 52 million Y(4S)-->B(B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-meson factory at SLAC. We determine the branching fraction, first, second, and third moments of the spectrum for lower cutoffs on the electron energy between 0.6 and 1.5 GeV. We measure the partial branching fraction to be B(B-->Xenu,E-e>0.6 GeV)=[10.36+/-0.06(stat.)+/-0.23(sys.)]%
Improved measurement of CP asymmetries in B-0 ->(c(c)over-bar)K0((*)) decays
We present results on time-dependent CP asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurements use a data sample of about 227x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-> B (B) over bar decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. The amplitude of the CPasymmetry, sin2 beta in the standard model, is derived from decay-time distributions from events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing a charmonium meson and the other B meson is determined to be either a B-0 or (0) from its decay products. We measure sin2 beta=0.722 +/- 0.040(stat)+/- 0.023(syst) in agreement with the standard model expectation
