Earth Potential Electrodes in Permafrost and Tundra
Introduction : During the past two years, the authors installed a number of electrodes
in the permafrost and tundra area of Point Barrow to obtain earth potential
data. As ground temperatures decreased during the winter, the resistances of
the first set of electrodes increased by several orders of magnitude and thus
became useless. A second set of electrodes, with sodium chloride incorporated
in the fill, proved entirely adequate for recording earth potentials. The installations
and procedure for determining electrode resistances are described
herein. Electrode resistance data versus time and ground temperatures are also

Mandelbrot's 1/f fractional renewal models of 1963-67: The non-ergodic missing link between change points and long range dependence
The problem of 1/f noise has been with us for about a century. Because it is
so often framed in Fourier spectral language, the most famous solutions have
tended to be the stationary long range dependent (LRD) models such as
Mandelbrot's fractional Gaussian noise. In view of the increasing importance to
physics of non-ergodic fractional renewal models, I present preliminary results
of my research into the history of Mandelbrot's very little known work in that
area from 1963-67. I speculate about how the lack of awareness of this work in
the physics and statistics communities may have affected the development of
complexity science, and I discuss the differences between the Hurst effect, 1/f

Ice core evidence for significant 100-year regional warming on the Antarctic Peninsula
We present a new 150-year, high-resolution, stable isotope record (delta O-18) from the Gomez ice core, drilled on the data sparse south western Antarctic Peninsula, revealing a similar to 2.7 degrees C rise in surface temperatures since the 1950s. The record is highly correlated with satellite-derived temperature reconstructions and instrumental records from Faraday station on the north west coast, thus making it a robust proxy for local and regional temperatures since the 1850s. We conclude that the exceptional 50-year warming, previously only observed in the northern Peninsula, is not just a local phenomena but part of a statistically significant 100-year regional warming trend that began around 1900. A suite of coupled climate models are employed to demonstrate that the 50 and 100 year temperature trends are outside of the expected range of variability from pre-industrial control runs, indicating that the warming is likely the result of external climate forcing. Radiative recombination of bare Bi83+: Experiment versus theory
Electron-ion recombination of completely stripped Bi83+ was investigated at
the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) of the GSI in Darmstadt. It was the first
experiment of this kind with a bare ion heavier than argon. Absolute
recombination rate coefficients have been measured for relative energies
between ions and electrons from 0 up to about 125 eV. In the energy range from
15 meV to 125 eV a very good agreement is found between the experimental result
and theory for radiative recombination (RR). However, below 15 meV the
experimental rate increasingly exceeds the RR calculation and at Erel = 0 eV it
is a factor of 5.2 above the expected value. For further investigation of this
enhancement phenomenon the electron density in the interaction region was set
to 1.6E6/cm3, 3.2E6/cm3 and 4.7E6/cm3. This variation had no significant
influence on the recombination rate. An additional variation of the magnetic
guiding field of the electrons from 70 mT to 150 mT in steps of 1 mT resulted
in periodic oscillations of the rate which are accompanied by considerable

Rossby wave dynamics of the North Pacific extra-tropical response to El Niño: importance of the basic state in coupled GCMs
The extra-tropical response to El Nino in a "low" horizontal resolution coupled climate model, typical of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change fourth assessment report simulations, is shown to have serious systematic errors. A high resolution configuration of the same model has a much improved response that is similar to observations. The errors in the low resolution model are traced to an incorrect representation of the atmospheric teleconnection mechanism that controls the extra-tropical sea surface temperatures (SSTs) during El Nino. This is due to an unrealistic atmospheric mean state, which changes the propagation characteristics of Rossby waves. These erroneous upper tropospheric circulation anomalies then induce erroneous surface circulation features over the North Pacific. The associated surface wind speed and direction errors create erroneous surface flux and upwelling anomalies which finally lead to the incorrect extra-tropical SST response to El Nino in the low resolution model. This highlights the sensitivity of the climate response to a single link in a chain of complex climatic processes. The correct representation of these processes in the high resolution model indicates the importance of horizontal resolution in resolving such processes
Isospin Dependence in the Odd-Even Staggering of Nuclear Binding Energies
The FRS-ESR facility at GSI provides unique conditions for precision
measurements of large areas on the nuclear mass surface in a single experiment.
Values for masses of 604 neutron-deficient nuclides (30<=Z<=92) were obtained
with a typical uncertainty of 30 microunits. The masses of 114 nuclides were
determined for the first time. The odd-even staggering (OES) of nuclear masses
was systematically investigated for isotopic chains between the proton shell
closures at Z=50 and Z=82. The results were compared with predictions of modern
nuclear models. The comparison revealed that the measured trend of OES is not
reproduced by the theories fitted to masses only. The spectral pairing gaps
extracted from models adjusted to both masses, and density related observables
of nuclei agree better with the experimental data.Comment: Physics Review Letters 95 (2005) 042501

Significant Role of Collagen XVII And Integrin beta 4 in Migration and Invasion of The Less Aggressive Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cells
Collagen XVII and integrin alpha 6 beta 4 have well-established roles as epithelial adhesion molecules. Their binding partner laminin 332 as well as integrin alpha 6 beta 4 are largely recognized to promote invasion and metastasis in various cancers, and collagen XVII is essential for the survival of colon and lung cancer stem cells. We have studied the expression of laminin.2, collagen XVII and integrin beta 4 in tissue microarray samples of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and its precursors, actinic keratosis and Bowen's disease. The expression of laminin.2 was highest in SCC samples, whereas the expression of collagen XVII and integrin beta 4 varied greatly in SCC and its precursors. Collagen XVII and integrin beta 4 were also expressed in SCC cell lines. Virus-mediated RNAi knockdown of collagen XVII and integrin beta 4 reduced the migration of less aggressive SCC-25 cells in horizontal scratch wound healing assay. Additionally, in a 3D organotypic myoma invasion assay the loss of collagen XVII or integrin beta 4 suppressed equally the migration and invasion of SCC-25 cells whereas there was no effect on the most aggressive HSC-3 cells. Variable expression patterns and results in migration and invasion assays suggest that collagen XVII and integrin beta 4 contribute to SCC tumorigenesis.Peer reviewe
Relativistic quantum dynamics in strong fields: Photon emission from heavy, few-electron ions
Recent progress in the study of the photon emission from highly-charged heavy
ions is reviewed. These investigations show that high- ions provide a unique
tool for improving the understanding of the electron-electron and
electron-photon interaction in the presence of strong fields. Apart from the
bound-state transitions, which are accurately described in the framework of
Quantum Electrodynamics, much information has been obtained also from the
radiative capture of (quasi-) free electrons by high- ions. Many features in
the observed spectra hereby confirm the inherently relativistic behavior of
even the simplest compound quantum systems in Nature.Comment: Version 18/11/0
