Web of Failure: The Relationship Between Foster Care and Homelessness
The purpose of this project is to examine the connection between foster care and homelessness and to determine whether or not there is an over-representation of people with a foster care history in the homeless population. In order to examine this issue, the project used four sources of information: (1) existing research on the connection between foster care and homelessness; (2) data collected from organizations which serve homeless people and which gather information on their clients' foster care history; (3) data obtained directly from a sample of homeless people; and (4) case studies of people who are or were homeless and who have a foster care history

The X-ray spectrum of the quiet sun in the energy range 2.3 - 6.9 keV was observed from an Aerobee rocket using an uncollimated graphite crystal spectrometer. These results and spatial measurements made with an onboard modulation collimator are analyzed using solar models
The Changing Economic Status of U.S. Disabled Men: Trends and Their Determinants, 1982–1991
In this paper, we track the level of economic well-being of the population of men who began receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits in 1980–81 from the time just after they became beneficiaries (in 1982) to 1991, nearly a decade later. We present measures of the economic well-being of disabled individuals and their nondisabled peers as indicators of the relative economic position of these two groups. These measures also provide an intertemporal comparison of well-being and hardship as disabled persons and their nondisabled peers age and retire. We first show several economic well-being indicators for this group of new male recipients of disability benefits in 1982 and 1991. Then, we compare their economic position to that of a matched group of nondisabled males with sufficient work histories to have been disability-insured, that is, eligible for SSDI benefits had they been unable to engage in substantial gainful employment. Because labor market changes over this decade have led to a relative deterioration in the position of younger and less-educated workers, we compare men with disabilities to those without disabilities and distinguish different age and educational levels within the groups. In studying these comparative trends in well-being, we focus on the prevalence of poverty and its correlates. We conclude by assessing the antipoverty effectiveness of Social Security income support for both younger and older men who became SSDI recipients in 1980–81.

Cre/lox generation of a novel whole-body Kiss1r KO mouse line recapitulates a hypogonadal, obese, and metabolically-impaired phenotype.
Kisspeptin and its receptor, Kiss1r, act centrally to stimulate reproduction. Recent evidence indicates that kisspeptin is also important for body weight and metabolism, as whole-body Kiss1r KO mice, developed with gene trap technology, display obesity and reduced metabolism. Kiss1r is expressed in brain and multiple peripheral tissues, but it is unknown which is responsible for the metabolic phenotype. Here, we sought to confirm that 1) the metabolic phenotype of the gene trap Kiss1r KOs is due to disruption of kisspeptin signaling and not off-target effects of viral mutagenesis, and 2) the Kiss1r flox line is suitable for creating conditional KOs to study the metabolic phenotype. We used Cre/lox technology (Zp3-Cre/Kiss1r flox) to develop a new global Kiss1r KO ("Kiss1r gKO") to compare with the original gene trap KO phenotype. We confirmed that deleting exon 2 of Kiss1r from the entire body induces hypogonadism in both sexes. Moreover, global deletion of Kiss1r induced obesity in females, but not males, along with increased adiposity and impaired glucose tolerance, similar to the gene trap Kiss1r KOs. Likewise, Kiss1r gKO females had decreased VO2 and VCO2, likely underlying their obesity. These findings support that our previous results in gene trap Kiss1r KOs are due to disrupted kisspeptin signaling, and further highlight a role for Kiss1r signaling in energy expenditure and metabolism besides controlling reproduction. Moreover, given Kiss1r expression in multiple cell-types, our findings indicate that the Kiss1r flox line is viable for future investigations to isolate specific target cells of kisspeptin's metabolic effects
Search for cold gas in z>2 damped Lyman-alpha systems: 21-cm and H_2 absorption
(Abridged) We present the results of a systematic GBT and GMRT survey for
21-cm absorption in a sample of 10 DLAs at 2<z_abs<3.4. Analysis of L-band VLBA
images of the background QSOs are also presented. We detect 21-cm absorption in
only one DLA (at z_abs = 3.1745 towards J1337+3152). Combining our data with
the data from the literature (a sample of 28 DLAs) and assuming the measured
core fraction at milliarcsecond scale to represent the gas covering factor, we
find that the HI gas in DLAs at z> 2 is predominantly constituted by WNM. The
detection rate of 21-cm absorption seems to be higher for systems with higher
N(HI) or metallicity. However, no clear correlation is found between the
integrated 21-cm optical depth (or spin temperature) and either N(HI),
metallicity or velocity spread of the low ionization species. There are 13 DLAs
in our sample for which high resolution optical spectra covering the expected
wavelength range of H_2 absorption are available. We report the detection of
H_2 molecules in the z_abs = 3.3871 21-cm absorber towards J0203+1134 (PKS
0201+113). In 8 cases, neither H_2 nor 21-cm absorption are detected. The lack
of 21-cm and H_2 absorption in these systems can be explained if most of the HI
in these DLAs originate from low density high temperature gas. In one case we
have a DLA with 21-cm absorption not showing H_2 absorption. In two cases, both
species are detected but do not originate from the same velocity component. In
the remaining 2 cases 21-cm absorption is not detected despite the presence of
H_2 with evidence for the presence of cold gas. All this is consistent with the
idea that the H_2 components seen in DLAs are compact (with sizes of < 15 pc)
and contain only a small fraction (i.e typically <10%) of the total N(HI)
measured in the DLAs.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Heat pumping in nanomechanical systems
We propose using a phonon pumping mechanism to transfer heat from a cold to a
hot body using a propagating modulation of the medium connecting the two
bodies. This phonon pump can cool nanomechanical systems without the need for
active feedback. We compute the lowest temperature that this refrigerator can

Likelihood-based semi-supervised model selection with applications to speech processing
In conventional supervised pattern recognition tasks, model selection is
typically accomplished by minimizing the classification error rate on a set of
so-called development data, subject to ground-truth labeling by human experts
or some other means. In the context of speech processing systems and other
large-scale practical applications, however, such labeled development data are
typically costly and difficult to obtain. This article proposes an alternative
semi-supervised framework for likelihood-based model selection that leverages
unlabeled data by using trained classifiers representing each model to
automatically generate putative labels. The errors that result from this
automatic labeling are shown to be amenable to results from robust statistics,
which in turn provide for minimax-optimal censored likelihood ratio tests that
recover the nonparametric sign test as a limiting case. This approach is then
validated experimentally using a state-of-the-art automatic speech recognition
system to select between candidate word pronunciations using unlabeled speech
data that only potentially contain instances of the words under test. Results
provide supporting evidence for the utility of this approach, and suggest that

Experimental Studies of NaCs
We present experimental studies of excited electronic states of the NaCs molecule that are currently underway in our laboratory. The optical-optical double resonance method is used to obtain Doppler-free excitation spectra for several excited states. These data are being used to obtain RydbergKlein-Rees (RKR) or Inverse Perturbation Approach (IPA) potential curves for these states. We are also trying to map the bound portion of the 1(a) 3Σ + potential using resolved laser-induced fluorescence and Fourier transform spectroscopy to record transitions into the shallow well. Bound-free spectra from single ro-vibrational levels of electronically excited states to the repulsive wall of the 1(a) 3Σ + state are also being recorded. Using the previously determined excited state potentials, we can fit the repulsive wall of the 1(a) 3Σ + state to reproduce the experimental spectra using LeRoy’s BCONT program. A slightly modified version of BCONT will also be used to fit the relative transition dipole moments, µe(R), as a function of internuclear separation R, for the various bound-free electronic transitions
