Mitochondrial DNA lineages of Italian Giara and Sarcidano horses
Giara and Sarcidano are 2 of the 15 extant native Italian horse breeds with limited dispersal capability that originated from a larger number of individuals. The 2 breeds live in two distinct isolated locations on the island of Sardinia. To determine the genetic structure and evolutionary history of these 2 Sardinian breeds, the first hypervariable segment of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was sequenced and analyzed in 40 Giara and Sarcidano horses and compared with publicly available mtDNA data from 43 Old World breeds. Four different analyses, including genetic distance, analysis of molecular variance, haplotype sharing, and clustering methods, were used to study the genetic relationships between the Sardinian and other horse breeds. The analyses yielded similar results, and the FST values indicated that a high percentage of the total genetic variation was explained by between-breed differences. Consistent with their distinct phenotypes and geographic isolation, the two Sardinian breeds were shown to consist of 2 distinct gene pools that had no gene flow between them. Giara horses were clearly separated from the other breeds examined and showed traces of ancient separation from horses of other breeds that share the same mitochondrial lineage. On the other hand, the data from the Sarcidano horses fit well with variation among breeds from the Iberian Peninsula and North-West Europe: genetic relationships among Sarcidano and the other breeds are consistent with the documented history of this breed
PACE and EISCAT radar observations of short-lived flow bursts on the nightside
Concurrent observations from two widely spaced radar experiments of quasi periodic flow bursts in the nightside are presented. The flow bursts closely resemble single radar observations reported by Williams et al. By using the Polar Anglo-American Conjugate Experiment (PACE) HF radar array at Halley Bay in conjunction with the EISCAT Common Program (CP) 2-D experiment, the flow bursts are shown to be a global phenomenon and important information as to their development and propagation can be determined
Polarization retention loss in PbTiO3 ferroelectric films due to leakage currents
The relationship between retention loss in single crystal PbTiO3 ferroelectric thin films and leakage currents is demonstrated by piezoresponse and conductive atomic force microscopy measurements. It was found that the polarization reversal in the absence of an electric field followed a stretched exponential behavior 1−exp[−(t/k)^d] with exponent d>1, which is distinct from a dispersive random walk process with d<1. The latter has been observed in polycrystalline films for which retention loss was associated with grain boundaries. The leakage current indicates power law scaling at short length scales, which strongly depends on the applied electric field. Additional information of the microstructure, which contributes to an explanation of the presence of leakage currents, is presented with high resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis.
Standardization of Seismic Tomographic Models and Earthquake Focal Mechanisms Datasets Based on Web Technologies, Visualization with Keyhole Markup Language
We present two projects in seismology that have been ported to web technologies, which provide results in Keyhole Markup Language (KML) visualization layers. These use the Google Earth geo-browser as the flexible platform that can substitute specialized graphical tools to perform qualitative visual data analyses and comparisons. The Network of Research Infrastructures for European Seismology (NERIES) Tomographic Earth Model Repository contains datasets from over 20 models from the literature. A hierarchical structure of folders that represent the sets of depths for each model is implemented in KML, and this immediately results into an intuitive interface for users to navigate freely and to compare tomographic plots. The KML layer for the European-Mediterranean Regional Centroid-Moment Tensor Catalog displays the focal mechanism solutions or moderate magnitude Earthquakes from 1997 to the present. Our aim in both projects was to also propose standard representations of scientific datasets. Here, the general semantic approach of XML has an important impact that must be further explored, although we find the KML syntax to be more shifted towards detailed visualization aspects. We have thus used, and propose the use of, Javascript Object Notation (JSON), another semantic notation that stems from the web-development community that provides a compact, general-purpose, data-exchange format
Large-scale wind-tunnel tests of inverting flaps on a STOL utility aircraft model
A unique inverting flap system was investigated on a large scale deflected slipstream model in the Ames 40 by 80 foot wind tunnel. The subject tests utilized 33% chord double-slotted flaps on a low aspect ratio wing that was fully immersed in the propeller slipstream. Evaluation of the flap effectiveness is aided by comparisons with the results of tests of other flap systems on the same twin propeller, twin tail boom STOL utility aircraft mode. No extreme or abrupt force or moment increments were encountered when the flaps were deflected through a wide range, corresponding to the complete retraction/extension spectrum. The lift and descent capability of the inverting flaps compared very favorably with that of the other flap systems that have been tested on this model, including some with much greater mechanical complexity. As expected, the flaps caused large nose down, pitching moment increments at the high lift settings; however, the trimmed characteristics are still competitive with those obtained from the more complicated flap systems. It is believed that these flaps may have promising potential application to the design of relatively simple STOL utility aircraft with improved performance capabilities. In addition, they may merit consideration as retrofits to existing aircraft with less effective flap systems

In Medio Stat Virtus: Effective Communication and Preferences for Redistribution in Hard Times
This paper evaluates the effects of statistical information on preferences for redistribution of scarce public resources. We refer to scarce resource with reference to the COVID-19 emergency: allocation of the first round of vaccine and the allocation of financial resources provided by the Italian national government to fight the economic emergency triggered by the pandemic. Randomly allocating the information through an online experiment, we show that treated respondents tend to prioritize the group targeted by the information, and they are more likely to do so if they are "in the middle", in terms of age, political preferences, religiosity and education
