    Non-classical computing: feasible versus infeasible

    Physics sets certain limits on what is and is not computable. These limits are very far from having been reached by current technologies. Whilst proposals for hypercomputation are almost certainly infeasible, there are a number of non classical approaches that do hold considerable promise. There are a range of possible architectures that could be implemented on silicon that are distinctly different from the von Neumann model. Beyond this, quantum simulators, which are the quantum equivalent of analogue computers, may be constructable in the near future

    Active learning in an apparel production management course: Student perceptions, instructor training, and learning outcomes

    Active learning environment was introduced to an apparel production management course. Class format was perceived as a good learning environment. Students were engaged in class material and able to understand its application to the apparel industry while gaining an increased depth of knowledge for the course content. Peer-to-peer interaction improved their learning experience in class as they shared knowledge when completing the assignment. Instructor training in active learning did have an impact on students\u27 perceptions of active learning so additional training may increase student perceptions. Learning outcomes did not increase but maintained a mean scores of 88

Cold stress is an important abiotic stress that affects plant growth and development, resulting in loss of vigour and surface lesions. These symptoms are caused by, among other metabolic processes, the altered physical and chemical composition of cell membranes. As a major component of cell membranes lipids have been recognized as having a significant role in cold stress, both as a mechanical defence through leaf surface protection and plasma membrane remodelling, and as signal transduction molecules. We present an overview integrating gene expression and lipidomic data published so far in Arabidopsis and its relative the extremophile Eutrema salsugineum. This data enables a better understanding of the contribution of the lipidome in determining the ability to tolerate suboptimal temperature conditions. Collectively this information will allow us to identify the key lipids and pathways responsible for resilience, enabling the development of new approaches for crop tolerance to stress.Peer reviewe

    Drought Tolerance of Interspecific Hybrids between \u3ci\u3eTrifolium repens\u3c/i\u3e and \u3ci\u3eTrifolium ambiguum\u3c/i\u3e

    Hybrids between the stolonifeous white clover (Trifolium repens L., 2n=4x=32) and rhizomatous Caucasian clover (T. ambiguum M.Bieb, 2n=4x=32) have been produced. A backcross 2 (BC2) generation with white clover as the recurrent parent combines the growth habit of both parent species with the objective of increasing the persistency of large leaved T. repens varieties under grazing. T. ambiguum is more drought tolerant than T. repens. The drought tolerance of the hybrids in comparison with the parental species was compared in deep soil bins over a four week drought cycle. Soil moisture content, leaf relative water content (RWC), and leaf water potential were measured on plants subjected to drought and those watered normally and maintained at field capacity. T. ambiguum and the backcross hybrids were able to maintain a higher leaf RWC and leaf water potential than T. repens at comparable levels of soil moisture. The dry matter production of the hybrids and parental species was also compared in field plots sown with a perennial ryegrass companion. In the first harvest year, under a cutting regime, the yield of T. repens was highest and T. ambiguum lowest with the hybrids intermediate between the parents, with the BC2 approaching the yield of T. repens. These hybrids will be evaluated over further years and under grazing. The implications of these results for T. repens germplasm improvement programmes are discussed
