Exotic magnetism on the quasi-FCC lattices of the double perovskites LaNaBO (B Ru, Os)
We find evidence for long-range and short-range ( 70 \AA~at 4 K)
incommensurate magnetic order on the quasi-face-centered-cubic (FCC) lattices
of the monoclinic double perovskites LaNaRuO and LaNaOsO
respectively. Incommensurate magnetic order on the FCC lattice has not been
predicted by mean field theory, but may arise via a delicate balance of
inequivalent nearest neighbour and next nearest neighbour exchange
interactions. In the Ru system with long-range order, inelastic neutron
scattering also reveals a spin gap 2.75 meV. Magnetic
anisotropy is generally minimized in the more familiar octahedrally-coordinated
systems, so the large gap observed for LaNaRuO may result from
the significantly enhanced value of spin-orbit coupling in this
material.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Effect of Mn substitution by Ga on the optical properties of a metallic manganite
In a metallic manganite like La(2/3)Sr(1/3)MnO(3), the substitution of Mn(+3)
by Ga(+3) dilutes the ferromagnetic order and locally cancels the Jahn-Teller
distortion, without heavily affecting the crystal structure. One can thus
follow the changes in the charge dynamics induced by Ga, until the
ferro-metallic manganite is turned into an insulator. Here this phenomenon is
studied in detail through the infrared reflectivity of five samples of
La(2/3)Sr(1/3)Mn(1-x)Ga(x)O(3), with x increasing from 0 to 0.30 and for 50 < T
< 320 K. A simple model which links the measured optical parameters to the
magnetization M(x, T) well describes the behavior of the plasma frequency, the
scattering rate, and the mid-infrared absorption along the metal-to-insulator
transition.Comment: 8 pages including 7 figure
Spectrum of a magnetized strong-leg quantum spin ladder
Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the spin excitation spectrum
of the Heisenberg ladder material (CHN)CuBr in its
entirety, both in the gapped spin-liquid and the magnetic field induced
Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid regimes. A fundamental change of the spin
dynamics is observed between these two regimes. DMRG calculations
quantitatively reproduce and help understand the observed commensurate and
incommensurate excitations. The results validate long-standing quantum field
theoretical predictions, but also test the limits of that approach
Spin dynamics of heterometallic Cr7M wheels (M = Mn, Zn, Ni) probed by inelastic neutron scattering
Inelastic neutron scattering has been applied to the study of the spin
dynamics of Cr-based antiferromagnetic octanuclear rings where a finite total
spin of the ground state is obtained by substituting one Cr(III) ion (s = 3/2)
with Zn (s = 0), Mn (s = 5/2) or Ni (s = 1) di-cations. Energy and intensity
measurements for several intra-multiplet and inter-multiplet magnetic
excitations allow us to determine the spin wavefunctions of the investigated
clusters. Effects due to the mixing of different spin multiplets have been
considered. Such effects proved to be important to correctly reproduce the
energy and intensity of magnetic excitations in the neutron spectra. On the
contrary to what is observed for the parent homonuclear Cr8 ring, the symmetry
of the first excited spin states is such that anticrossing conditions with the
ground state can be realized in the presence of an external magnetic field.
Heterometallic Cr7M wheels are therefore good candidates for macroscopic
observations of quantum effects.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B, corrected typos and

Bound states and field-polarized Haldane modes in a quantum spin ladder
The challenge of one-dimensional systems is to understand their physics
beyond the level of known elementary excitations. By high-resolution neutron
spectroscopy in a quantum spin ladder material, we probe the leading
multiparticle excitation by characterizing the two-magnon bound state at zero
field. By applying high magnetic fields, we create and select the singlet
(longitudinal) and triplet (transverse) excitations of the fully spin-polarized
ladder, which have not been observed previously and are close analogs of the
modes anticipated in a polarized Haldane chain. Theoretical modelling of the
dynamical response demonstrates our complete quantitative understanding of
these states.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures plus supplementary material 7 pages 5 figure
Stroboscopic Laser Diagnostics for Detection of Ordering in One-Dimensional Ion beam
A novel diagnostic method for detecting ordering in one-dimensional ion beams
is presented. The ions are excited by a pulsed laser at two different positions
along the beam and fluorescence is observed by a group of four
photomultipliers. Correlation in fluorescence signals is firm indication that
the ion beam has an ordered structure.Comment: 7 pages, REVTEX, fig3 uuencoded, figs 1-2 available upon request from

Infrared characterization of silicon carbide nanowires
Silicon carbide nanowires have been obtained via combustion synthesis route. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the synthesized material is the 3C polytype of silicon carbide with zincblende unit cell. Detailed investigations of such SiC 1D
nanostructures were carried out exploiting Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. IR measurements we performed using BRUKER HYPERION FT-IR microscope. For the purpose of comparison, a series of powder samples were examined, including raw
synthesis product, purified SiC nanowires and several commercially available microand nanopowders (from Alpha Aesar and PlasmaChem). Comprehensive comparative analysis of the MIR spectra has been performed.
