    Region of Excessive Flux of PeV Cosmic Rays in the Direction Toward Pulsars PSR J1840+5640 and LAT PSR J1836+5925

    An analysis of arrival directions of extensive air showers (EAS) registered with the EAS MSU and EAS-1000 prototype arrays has revealed a region of excessive flux of PeV cosmic rays in the direction toward pulsars PSR J1840+5640 and LAT PSR J1836+5925 at significance level up to 4.5sigma. The first of the pulsars was discovered almost 30 years ago and is a well-studied old radio pulsar located at the distance of 1.7pc from the Solar system. The second pulsar belongs to a new type of pulsars, discovered by the space gamma-ray observatory Fermi, pulsations of which are not observed in optical and radio wavelengths but only in the gamma-ray range of energies (gamma-ray-only pulsars). In our opinion, the existence of the region of excessive flux of cosmic rays registered with two different arrays provides a strong evidence that isolated pulsars can give a noticeable contribution to the flux of Galactic cosmic rays in the PeV energy range.Comment: 14 pages; v.2: a few remarks to match a version accepted for Astronomy Letters added.     The effect of octopaminergic compounds on the behaviour and transmission of Gyrodactylus

    Background: The high transmission potential of species belonging to the monogenean parasite genus Gyrodactylus, coupled with their high fecundity, allows them to rapidly colonise new hosts and to increase in number. One gyrodactylid, Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957, has been responsible for devastation of Altantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) populations in a number of Norwegian rivers. Current methods of eradicating G. salaris from river systems centre around the use of non-specific biocides, such as rotenone and aluminium sulphate. Although transmission routes in gyrodactylids have been studied extensively, the behaviour of individual parasites has received little attention. Specimens of Gyrodactylus gasterostei Gläser, 1974 and G. arcuatus Bychowsky, 1933, were collected from the skin of their host, the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.), and permitted to attach to the substrate. The movements of individual parasites were recorded and analysed. Results: The behaviour patterns of the two species were similar and parasites were more active in red light and darkness than in white light. Four octopaminergic compounds were tested and all four inhibited the movements of parasites. Treatment ultimately led to death at low concentrations (0.2 μM), although prolonged exposure was necessary in some instances. Conclusions: Octopaminergic compounds may affect the parasite's ability to locate and remain on its host and these or related compounds might provide alternative or supplementary treatments for the control of G. salaris infections. With more research there is potential for use of octopaminergic compounds, which have minimal effects on the host or its environment, as parasite-specific treatments against G. salaris infections

    Tracing the Source of Hydrothermal Fluid in Ophiolite-Related Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide Deposits: A Case Study from the Italian Northern Apennines

    The Italian Northern Apennines contain several Fe-Cu-Zn-bearing, Cyprus-type volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, which significantly contribute to the Cu resources of Italy. The massive sulfide lenses and related stockwork mineralizations are hosted by several levels (from basalt to serpentinite) of the unmetamorphosed ophiolitic series; therefore, this region offers perfect locations to study the ore-forming hydrothermal system in detail. A combination of fluid inclusion microthermometry, Raman spectroscopy, electron probe analyses (chlorite thermometry) and stable and noble gas isotope geochemistry was used to determine the fluid source of the VMS system at Bargone, Boccassuolo, Campegli, Casali–Monte Loreto, Corchia, Reppia and Vigonzano. This question of the fluid source is the focus of modern VMS research worldwide, as it has a direct influence on the metal content of the deposit. The obtained temperature and compositional data are both in the typical range of VMS systems and basically suggest evolved seawater origin for the mineralizing fluid. Modification of seawater was most commonly due to fluid–rock interaction processes, which happened during long-lasting circulation in the crust. The role of a small amount of magmatic fluid input was traced only at the lower block of Boccassuolo, which may be responsible for its higher ore grade.
