    The Influence Of An External Dc Substrate Bias On The Density Of States In Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon

    We report a study of the dependence of the density of states in hydrogenated amorphous silicon produced under different dc substrate biases. A dependence of the density of states in materials deposited simultaneously onto indium-tin-oxide-coated glass and stainless steel has been found. The same is attributed to sheath plasma differences at the top surface of the growing film. The density of states was determined by the space-charge-limited current method. The universal scaling law is tested for samples having a similar density of states. Attempts were made to correlate the product of the hole mobility and the recombination time for samples deposited in conditions similar to those used in the space-charge-limited current experiments.65124869487

    Predicting pharmaceutical inkjet printing outcomes using machine learning

    Inkjet printing has been extensively explored in recent years to produce personalised medicines due to its low cost and versatility. Pharmaceutical applications have ranged from orodispersible films to complex polydrug implants. However, the multi-factorial nature of the inkjet printing process makes formulation (e.g., composition, surface tension, and viscosity) and printing parameter optimization (e.g., nozzle diameter, peak voltage, and drop spacing) an empirical and time-consuming endeavour. Instead, given the wealth of publicly available data on pharmaceutical inkjet printing, there is potential for a predictive model for inkjet printing outcomes to be developed. In this study, machine learning (ML) models (random forest, multilayer perceptron, and support vector machine) to predict printability and drug dose were developed using a dataset of 687 formulations, consolidated from in-house and literature-mined data on inkjet-printed formulations. The optimized ML models predicted the printability of formulations with an accuracy of 97.22%, and predicted the quality of the prints with an accuracy of 97.14%. This study demonstrates that ML models can feasibly provide predictive insights to inkjet printing outcomes prior to formulation preparation, affording resource- and time-savings

    The MIDAS telescope for microwave detection of ultra-high energy cosmic rays

    We present the design, implementation and data taking performance of the MIcrowave Detection of Air Showers (MIDAS) experiment, a large field of view imaging telescope designed to detect microwave radiation from extensive air showers induced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. This novel technique may bring a tenfold increase in detector duty cycle when compared to the standard fluorescence technique based on detection of ultraviolet photons. The MIDAS telescope consists of a 4.5 m diameter dish with a 53-pixel receiver camera, instrumented with feed horns operating in the commercial extended C-Band (3.4 -- 4.2 GHz). A self-trigger capability is implemented in the digital electronics. The main objectives of this first prototype of the MIDAS telescope - to validate the telescope design, and to demonstrate a large detector duty cycle - were successfully accomplished in a dedicated data taking run at the University of Chicago campus prior to installation at the Pierre Auger Observatory.Comment: 13 pages, 18 figure

    Antirhea borbonica Aqueous Extract Protects Albumin and Erythrocytes from Glycoxidative Damages

    Diabetes constitutes a major health problem associated with severe complications. In hyperglycemic conditions, chronically increased oxidation and glycation of circulating components lead to advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) formation, a key contributor in diabetes complication progression. In line with literature documenting the beneficial properties of herbal teas, this study evaluates the antioxidant/glycant properties of Antirhea borbonica (Ab). Ab aqueous extract effects were tested on human albumin or erythrocytes submitted to methyl glyoxal-mediated glycoxidative damages. By using mass spectrometry, Ab aqueous extracts revealed to be rich in polyphenols. All tested biomarkers of oxidation and glycation, such as AGE, ketoamine, oxidized thiol groups, were decreased in albumin when glycated in the presence of Ab aqueous extract. Ab extract preserve erythrocyte from methylglyoxal (MGO)-induced damages in terms of restored membrane deformability, reduced oxidative stress and eryptosis phenomenon. Antioxidant capacities of Ab extract on erythrocytes were retrieved in vivo in zebrafish previously infused with MGO. These results bring new evidences on the deleterious impacts of glycation on albumin and erythrocyte in diabetes. Furthermore, it reveals antioxidant and antiglycant properties of Ab that could be used for the dietary modulation of oxidative stress and glycation in hyperglycemic situations

    Investigation of selected genomic deletions and duplications in a cohort of 338 patients presenting with syndromic obesity by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification using synthetic probes

    Background: Certain rare syndromes with developmental delay or intellectual disability caused by genomic copy number variants (CNVs), either deletions or duplications, are associated with higher rates of obesity. Current strategies to diagnose these syndromes typically rely on phenotype-driven investigation. However, the strong phenotypic overlap between syndromic forms of obesity poses challenges to accurate diagnosis, and many different individual cytogenetic and molecular approaches may be required. Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) enables the simultaneous analysis of multiple targeted loci in a single test, and serves as an important screening tool for large cohorts of patients in whom deletions and duplications involving specific loci are suspected. Our aim was to design a synthetic probe set for MLPA analysis to investigate in a cohort of 338 patients with syndromic obesity deletions and duplications in genomic regions that can cause this phenotype.Results: We identified 18 patients harboring copy number imbalances; 18 deletions and 5 duplications. the alterations in ten patients were delineated by chromosomal microarrays, and in the remaining cases by additional MLPA probes incorporated into commercial kits. Nine patients showed deletions in regions of known microdeletion syndromes with obesity as a clinical feature: in 2q37 (4 cases), 9q34 (1 case) and 17p11.2 (4 cases). Four patients harbored CNVs in the DiGeorge syndrome locus at 22q11.2. Two other patients had deletions within the 22q11.2 'distal' locus associated with a variable clinical phenotype and obesity in some individuals. the other three patients had a recurrent CNV of one of three susceptibility loci: at 1q21.1 'distal', 16p11.2 'distal', and 16p11.2 'proximal'.Conclusions: Our study demonstrates the utility of an MLPA-based first line screening test to the evaluation of obese patients presenting with syndromic features. the overall detection rate with the synthetic MLPA probe set was about 5.3% (18 out of 338).     "Assessment of effectiveness and security in high pressure postdilatation of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds during percutaneous coronary intervention. Study in a contemporary, non-selected cohort of Spanish patients"

    OBJECTIVES: To determine security and benefits of high pressure postdilatation (HPP) of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of complex lesions whatever its indication is. BACKGROUND: Acute scaffold disruption has been proposed as the main limitation of BVS when they are overexpanded. However, clinical implications of this disarray are not yet clear and more evidence is needed. METHODS: A total of 25 BVS were deployed during PCI of 14 complex lesions after mandatory predilatation. In all cases HPP was performed with NC balloon in a 1:1 relation to the artery. After that, optical coherence tomography (OCT) analyses were performed. RESULTS: Mean and maximal postdilatation pressure were 17±3.80 and 20 atmospheres (atm) respectively. Postdilatation balloon/scaffold diameter ratio was 1.01. A total of 39,590 struts were analyzed. Mean, minimal and maximal scaffold diameter were respectively: 3.09±0.34mm, 2.88±0.31mm and 3.31±0.40mm. Mean eccentricity index was 0.13±0.05. ISA percentage was 1.42% with a total of 564 malapposed struts. 89 struts were identified as disrupted, which represents a percentage of disrupted struts of 0.22%. At 30days, none of our patients died, suffered from stroke, stent thrombosis or needed target lesion revascularization (TLR). CONCLUSIONS: NC balloon HPP of BVS at more than 17atm (up to 20atm) is safe during PCI and allows to achieve better angiographic and clinical results

    Tumor necrosis Factor Receptor-1 (p55) deficiency attenuates tumor growth and intratumoral angiogenesis and stimulates CD8+ T cell function in melanoma

    The role of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in shaping the tumor microenvironment is ambiguous. Consistent with its uncertain role in melanoma, TNF-α plays a dual role, either acting as a cytotoxic cytokine or favoring a tumorigenic inflammatory microenvironment. TNF-α signals via two cognate receptors, namely TNFR1 (p55) and TNFR2 (p75), which mediate divergent biological activities. Here, we analyzed the impact of TNFR1 deficiency in tumor progression in the B16.F1 melanoma model. Tumors developed in mice lacking TNFR1 (TNFR1 knock-out; KO) were smaller and displayed lower proliferation compared to their wild type (WT) counterpart. Moreover, TNFR1 KO mice showed reduced tumor angiogenesis. Although no evidence of spontaneous metastases was observed, conditioned media obtained from TNFR1 KO tumors increased tumor cell migration. Whereas the analysis of tumor-associated immune cell infiltrates showed similar frequency of total and M2-polarized tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), the percentage of CD8+ T cells was augmented in TNFR1 KO tumors. Indeed, functional ex vivo assays demonstrated that CD8+ T cells obtained from TNFR1KO mice displayed an increased cytotoxic function. Thus, lack of TNFR1 attenuates melanoma growth by modulating tumor cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis and CD8+ T cell accumulation and activation, suggesting that interruption of TNF-TNFR1 signaling may contribute to control tumor burden.Fil: Rodriguez, Yamila Isabel.     Effect of NAA concentrations on rooting of hardwood cuttings of Croton urucurana Baill., Tabernaemontana catharinensis A. DC. and Paullinia elegans Cambess

    El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el enraizamiento de estacas de Croton urucurana Baill., Tabernaemontana catharinensis A. DC. y Paullinia elegans Cambess conocidas en Argentina como “Sangre de drago” (SD), “Horquetero” (TC) y “Ojo de muñeca” (PE), respectivamente. Se recolectaron 200 estacas leñosas por especie; una vez defoliadas se aplicó ácido naftalén acético (ANA) en las siguientes dosis: 0, 1000, 2500 y 3500 mg.L-1 en SD y TC y 0, 500, 1000 y 2500 mg.L-1 en PE. Se evaluó la formación y calidad de raíces y el diámetro de las estacas a la altura del cuello (DAC). En SD las dosis de ANA ≥1000 mg.L-1 aumentaron la probabilidad de enraizamiento de 0,36 a 0,71. En PE hubo baja probabilidad de enraizamiento (0,13) independientemente de la dosis de ANA, pero aumentó en función del DAC. No se observó formación de raíces en TC. La calidad de enraizamiento no fue afectada por la diferentes dosis de ANA, pero sí el DAC en SD.The objective of this work was to evaluate the rooting potential of “Sangre de Drago” (SD: Croton urucurana Baill.), “Horquetero” (TC: Tabernaemontana catharinensis A. DC.) and “Ojo de muñeca” (PE: Paullinia elegans Cambess.) cuttings by immersion in 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Two hundred cuttings without leaves per species were collected and immersed in 0, 1000, 2500 and 3500 ppm of NAA (for SD and TC) and 0, 500, 1000 and 2500 ppm of NAA for PE. At the end of the rooting period the following variables were registered on each cutting; the presence of roots, diameter at the base of the cutting (DAC) and rooting quality. Rooting probability was highest (0.76) for NAA than control (0.36) on SD cuttings. The rooting probability was very low on PE regardless of the NAA dose (0.13) but was directly proportional to the DAC. Root formation was not observed on TC, regardless of the NAA dose nor DAC.     Design and Construction Methods of Caisson-Type Maritime Infrastructures Using GFRP

    Glass-fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRPs) are commonly used in various applications in civil-engineering projects. However, they are not common in the construction of civil-marine structures. The GFRP caisson technology was developed for the construction of two mooring dolphins in Puerto el Rosario (Fuerteventura, Spain). Ultraviolet-protected glass-fiber and epoxy resin coats were used to build a 12-m diameter, 13.3-m high cylindrical structure. A finite-element model was used to verify the sandwich composite configuration using the Tsai?Hill criteria?the shear strength of the skins and honeycomb core and the buckling and local failure modes with respect to the composite configuration. This is the first time that the two caissons were designed and built of polymeric materials and installed in a seaport. Accordingly, the construction technique marks a milestone in civil engineering because of its highly innovative nature in addition to significantly reducing the time associated with and the complexity of construction operations
