    Zusammenfassung: Der Nutzungsdruck auf Grundwasserressourcen in intensiv genutzten Flussebenen wird zunehmend größer. Ziel dieses Beitrages ist, anhand eines repräsentativen, instationären Datensatzes eines urbanen Grundwassersystems (Unteres Birstal CH) aufzuzeigen, wie mit Ansätzen des adaptiven Grundwassermanagements die Voraussetzungen für die nachhaltige Nutzung von Grundwasserressourcen geschaffen werden können. Mithilfe eines instationären Grundwassermodells können spezifische Fragen der Fluss-Grundwasser-Interaktion und dem Betrieb künstlicher Grundwasseranreicherung beantwortet werden. Die Instationarität der Fluss-Grundwasser-Interaktion und eine damit zusammenhängende Änderung von In - und Exfiltrationsverhältnissen konnte für verschiedene Flussabschnitte ermittelt werden. Die Datenauswertung eines Jahrhunderthochwassers trug wesentlich zum Verständnis dieser Prozesse bei. Durch ein Experiment mit der längerfristigen Außerbetriebnahme einer künstlichen Grundwasseranreicherung im Untersuchungsgebiet konnten die Auswirkungen von geplanten Nutzungsänderungen abgeschätzt werden. Die Untersuchungen tragen zum Prozessverständnis des Grundwassersystems bei und liefern die Grundlage für eine Diskussion über lang-, mittel- und kurzfristige Ziele hinsichtlich der regionalen Bewirtschaftung urbaner Wasserressource

    Observation of Ising-like critical fluctuations in frustrated Josephson junction arrays with modulated coupling energies

    We report the results of ac sheet conductance measurements performed on fully frustrated square arrays of Josephson junctions whose coupling energy is periodically modulated in one of the principal lattice directions. Such systems are predicted to exhibit two distinct transitions: a low-temperature Ising-like transition triggered by the proliferation of domain walls and a high-temperature transition driven by the vortex unbinding mechanism of the Beresinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) theory. Both the superfluid and dissipative components of the conductance are found to exhibit features which unambiguously demonstrate the existence of a double transition whose properties are consistent with the Ising-BKT scenario.Comment: To be published in Physica C (Proceedings of the 2nd European Conference in School Format 'Vortex Matter in Superconductors'

    Sputtered W–N diffusion barriers

    The thermal stability of reactively sputtered tungsten–nitrogen alloy thin films is investigated for the application as diffusion barriers in silicon contact metallizations. The composition of W–N barriers is varied over a wide range including pure W. Aluminum, gold, and silver are used as low resistivity overlayers. Metallurgical interactions at temperatures ranging from 500 to 900 °C are studied. Incorporating nitrogen into tungsten advantageously stabilizes all three systems. The overall failure takes place rapidly above critical temperatures that depend on both the metal overlayer and the microstructure of the barrier. In some cases, W–N alloys can effectively prevent interdiffusion at temperatures as high as 800 °C for 30 min

    Laser annealing of silicon on sapphire

    Silicon-implanted silicon-on-sapphire wafers have been annealed by 50-ns pulses from a Q-switched Nd : YAG laser. The samples have been analyzed by channeling and by omega-scan x-ray double diffraction. After irradiation with pulses of a fluence of about 5 J cm^–2 the crystalline quality of the silicon layer is found to be better than in the as-grown state

    Genetic analysis of rab7 mutants in zebrafish

    Vascular network formation requires the fusion of newly formed blood vessels and the emergence of a patent lumen between the newly established connections so that blood flow can start. Lumen formation has been shown to depend on the late endosomal/lysosomal pathway in various organs of animal tubular systems. Here, we identified a late endosomal/lysosomal vesicular fraction (Rab7/Lamp2) in early zebrafish angiogenic sprouts, which appears to contribute to apical membrane growth during lumen formation. To study the effect of the late endocytic pathway on vascular development, we generated mutant alleles for all three rab7 genes in zebrafish ( rab7a, rab7ba, rab7bb ). All rab7 genes are expressed in wild-type zebrafish and we did not detect any compensatory effects by the other rab7 isoforms in single knockout mutants, which were all viable. Only the triple mutant was lethal suggesting some functional redundancy. However, the different rab7 isoforms fulfil also at least partially independent functions because eggs laid from mothers lacking two rab7 ( rab7a and/or rab7bb ). showed reduced survival and contained enlarged yolk granules, suggesting maternal contribution of these two rab7 . Finally, we observed minor effects on lumen formation in embryos which still express one copy of rab7 . Our results support the notion that the late endocytic/lysosomal compartment contributes to lumen expansion

    Phase-coherence threshold and vortex-glass state in diluted Josephson-junction arrays in a magnetic field

    We study numerically the interplay of phase coherence and vortex-glass state in two-dimensional Josephson-junction arrays with average rational values of flux quantum per plaquette ff and random dilution of junctions. For f=1/2f=1/2, we find evidence of a phase coherence threshold value xsx_s, below the percolation concentration of diluted junctions xpx_p, where the superconducting transition vanishes. For xs<x<xpx_s < x < x_p the array behaves as a zero-temperature vortex glass with nonzero linear resistance at finite temperatures. The zero-temperature critical currents are insensitive to variations in ff in the vortex glass region while they are strongly ff dependent in the phase coherent region.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.     ESPRESSO: The next European exoplanet hunter

    The acronym ESPRESSO stems for Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable Spectroscopic Observations; this instrument will be the next VLT high resolution spectrograph. The spectrograph will be installed at the Combined-Coud\'e Laboratory of the VLT and linked to the four 8.2 m Unit Telescopes (UT) through four optical Coud\'e trains. ESPRESSO will combine efficiency and extreme spectroscopic precision. ESPRESSO is foreseen to achieve a gain of two magnitudes with respect to its predecessor HARPS, and to improve the instrumental radial-velocity precision to reach the 10 cm/s level. It can be operated either with a single UT or with up to four UTs, enabling an additional gain in the latter mode. The incoherent combination of four telescopes and the extreme precision requirements called for many innovative design solutions while ensuring the technical heritage of the successful HARPS experience. ESPRESSO will allow to explore new frontiers in most domains of astrophysics that require precision and sensitivity. The main scientific drivers are the search and characterization of rocky exoplanets in the habitable zone of quiet, nearby G to M-dwarfs and the analysis of the variability of fundamental physical constants. The project passed the final design review in May 2013 and entered the manufacturing phase. ESPRESSO will be installed at the Paranal Observatory in 2016 and its operation is planned to start by the end of the same year.Comment: 12 pages, figures included, accepted for publication in Astron.
