Interferons (IFNs) play a key role against viral infections by stimulating the expression of IFN stimulated genes, such as Mx. The transcriptional regulation of these genes in fish are poorly understood. The sequencing of the Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) Mx gene promoter revealed the presence of a guanosine-citosine rich region that contains a microsatellite, sited close to the translation start codon. The aim of the current study has been to determine the functional role of this region and to study its variability.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Dynamical confirmation of a stellar-mass black hole in the transient X-ray dipping binary MAXI J1305-704

MAXI J1305-704 has been proposed as a high-inclination candidate black hole X-ray binary in view of its X-ray properties and dipping behaviour during outburst. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the source in quiescence that allow us to reveal the ellipsoidal modulation of the companion star and absorption features consistent with those of an early K-type star (Teff = 4610 +130 -160 K). The central wavelengths of the absorption lines vary periodically at Porb = 0.394 +- 0.004 d with an amplitude of K2 = 554 +- 8 km/s . They imply a mass function for the compact object of f(M1) = 6.9 +- 0.3 Msun, confirming its black hole nature. The simultaneous absence of X-ray eclipses and the presence of dips set a conservative range of allowed inclinations 60 deg < i < 82 deg, while modelling of optical light curves further constrain it to i = 72 +5 -8 deg. The above parameters together set a black hole mass of M1 = 8.9 +1.6 -1.0 Msun and a companion mass of M2=0.43 +- 0.16 Msun, much lower than that of a dwarf star of the observed spectral type, implying it is evolved. Estimates of the distance to the system (d = 7.5 +1.8 -1.4 kpc) and space velocity (vspace = 270 +- 60 km/s ) place it in the Galactic thick disc and favour a significant natal kick during the formation of the BH if the supernova occurred in the Galactic Plane.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. We present intermediate resolution spectroscopy of the optical counterpart to the black hole X-ray transient MAXI J1820+070 (=ASASSN-18ey) obtained with the OSIRIS spectrograph on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias. The observations were performed with the source close to the quiescent state and before the onset of renewed activity in August 2019. We make use of these data and K-type dwarf templates taken with the same instrumental configuration to measure the projected rotational velocity of the donor star. We find vrotsini=84±5v_{rot} \sin i = 84 \pm 5 km s1^{-1} (1 ⁣ ⁣σ1\!-\!\sigma), which implies a donor to black-hole mass ratio q=M2/M1=0.072±0.012q = {M_2}/{M_1} = 0.072 \pm 0.012 for the case of a tidally locked and Roche-lobe filling donor star. The derived dynamical masses for the stellar components are M1=(5.95±0.22)sin3iM_1 = (5.95 \pm 0.22)\sin ^{-3}i MM_\odot and M2=(0.43±0.08)sin3iM_2 = (0.43 \pm 0.08) \sin^{-3}i MM_\odot. The use of qq, combined with estimates of the accretion disk size at the time of the optical spectroscopy, allows us to revise our previous orbital inclination constraints to 66<i<8166^{\circ} < i < 81^{\circ}. These values lead to 95% confidence level limits on the masses of 5.73<M1(M)<8.345.73 <M_1(M_\odot) < 8.34 and 0.28<M2(M)<0.770.28 < M_2(M_\odot) < 0.77. Adopting instead the 63±363 \pm 3^{\circ} orientation angle of the radio jet as the binary inclination leads to M1=8.480.72+0.79MM_1 = 8.48^{+0.79}_{-0.72} M_\odot and M2=0.610.12+0.13MM_2 = 0.61^{+0.13}_{-0.12} M_\odot (1 ⁣ ⁣σ1\!-\!\sigma).Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. Equivalence regimes for geometric quantum discord and local quantum uncertainty

    Get PDF
The concept of quantum discord aims at unveiling quantum correlations that go beyond those described by entanglement. Its original formulation [L. Henderson and V. Vedral, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 34, 6899 (2001); H. Ollivier and W. H. Zurek, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 017901 (2001)] is difficult to compute even for the simplest case of two-qubits systems. Alternative formulations have been developed to address this drawback, such as the geometric measure of quantum discord [L. Chang and S. Luo, Phys. Rev. A 87, 062303 (2013)] and the local quantum uncertainty [D. Girolami, T. Tufarelli, and G. Adesso, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 240402 (2013)] that can be evaluated in closed form for some quantum systems, such as two-qubit systems. We show here that these two measures of quantum discord are equivalent for 2×D dimensional bipartite quantum systems. By considering the relevant example of N00N states for phase estimation in lossy environments, we also show that both metrics of quantum discord quantify the decrease of quantum Fisher information of the phase estimation protocol. Given their ease of computation in 2×D bipartite systems, the geometric measure of quantum discord and the local quantum uncertainty demonstrate their relevance as computable measures of quantum discord. We acknowledge support from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (“Severo Ochoa” program for Centres of Excellence in R&D No. SEV-2015-0522), from Fundacio Privada Cellex, from Fundacio Mir-Puig, and from Generalitat de Catalunya through the CERCA program. The dynamical mass of the white dwarf in XY Ari questions intermediate polar X-ray spectral models

We present a dynamical study of the eclipsing intermediate polar XY Ari based on time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy obtained with the EMIR spectrograph on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias. Using main sequence template spectra taken with the same instrument setup as the target spectra, we measure a radial velocity amplitude of the late K-type donor star K2=256±2K_2=256 \pm 2 km s1^{-1}. We also obtain the rotational broadening of its photospheric lines vrotsini=141±3v_\mathrm{rot} \sin i = 141 \pm 3 km s1^{-1}. From these and the eclipse geometry, we derive a donor-to-white dwarf mass ratio q=M2/M1=0.62±0.02q = M_2/M_1 = 0.62 \pm 0.02, an orbital inclination i=80.8±0.5i = 80.8^{\circ} \pm 0.5^{\circ} and dynamical masses M1=1.21±0.04MM_{1} = 1.21 \pm 0.04 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot} and M2=0.75±0.04MM_2 = 0.75 \pm 0.04 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot} (1σ1 \sigma). This result places the white dwarf in XY Ari as one of the three most massive known in a cataclysmic variable. Comparison with a number of white dwarf mass estimates from X-ray spectral modelling indicates the necessity of a major revision of the cooling models currently assumed for magnetic accretion in intermediate polars, as most of the X-ray white dwarf masses lie significantly below the dynamical mass value.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables, submitted for publication in MNRA

Agreement between a simple dyspnea-guided treatment algorithm for stable COPD and the GOLD guidelines: A pilot study

    Get PDF
Introduction: Guidelines recommendations for the treatment of COPD are poorly followed. This could be related to the complexity of classification and treatment algorithms. The purpose of this study was to validate a simpler dyspnea-based treatment algorithm for inhaled pharmacotherapy in stable COPD, comparing its concordance with the current Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guideline. Methods: We enrolled patients who had been diagnosed with COPD in three primary care facilities and two tertiary hospitals in Spain. We determined anthropometric data, forced expiratory volume in the 1st second (percent), exacerbations, and dyspnea based on the modified Medical Research Council scale. We evaluated the new algorithm based on dyspnea and exacerbations and calculated the concordance with the current GOLD recommendations. Results: We enrolled 100 patients in primary care and 150 attending specialized care in a respiratory clinic. There were differences in the sample distribution between cohorts with 41% vs 26% in grade A, 16% vs 12% in grade B, 16% vs 22% in grade C, and 27% vs 40% in grade D for primary and respiratory care, respectively (P=0.005). The coincidence of the algorithm with the GOLD recommendations in primary care was 93% and 91.8% in the respiratory care cohort. Conclusion: A simple dyspnea-based treatment algorithm for inhaled pharmacotherapy of COPD could be useful in the management of COPD patients and concurs very well with the recommended schema suggested by the GOLD initiative
