    Relation of resistin levels with cardiovascular risk factors, insulin resistance and inflammation in naı¨ve diabetes obese patients

    Producción CientíficaBackground: The aim of the present study was to explore the relationship of resistin levels with cardiovascular risk factors, insulin resistance and inflammation in naı¨ve diabetic patients. Subjects: A population of 66 naı¨ve diabetic patients with obesity was analyzed. A complete nutritional and biochemical evaluation was performed. Results: The mean age 56.9 11.6 years and the mean BMI was 37.8 6.3. Patients were divided in two groups by median resistin value (3.3 ng/ml), group I (patients with the low values, average value 2.5 0.5) and group II (patients with the high values, average value 4.8 1.8). Patients in the group I had lower waist circumference, total cholesterol, LDLcholesterol and C-reactive protein than patients in group II. Correlation analysis showed a significant correlation among resistin levels and the independent variables; BMI (r = 0.26; p < 0.05), waist circumference (r = 0.38; p < 0.05), fat mass (r = 0.28; p < 0.05), LDL-cholesterol (r = 0.3; p < 0.05), C-reactive protein (r = 0.28; p < 0.05). In the multivariate analysis, resistin concentration increase 0.024 ng/ml (CI 95%: 0.006–0.42) for each mg/dl of C-reactive protein. Conclusion: Circulating resistins are associated with C-reactive protein in an independent way in naı¨ve diabetic patients

    Unusual concentration of Early Albian arthropod-bearing amber in the Basque-Cantabrian Basin (El Soplao, Cantabria, Northern Spain) : palaeoenvironmental and palaeobiological implications

    The El Soplao site is a recently-discovered Early Albian locality of the Basque-Cantabrian Basin (northern Spain) that has yielded a number of amber pieces with abundant bioinclusions. The amber-bearing deposit occurs in a non-marine to transitional marine siliciclastic unit (Las Peñosas Formation) that is interleaved within a regressive-transgressive, carbonate-dominated Lower Aptian-Upper Albian marine sequence. The Las Peñosas Formation corresponds to the regressive stage of this sequence and in its turn it splits into two smaller regressive-transgressive cycles. The coal and amber-bearing deposits occur in deltaic-estuarine environments developed during the maximum regressive episodes of these smaller regressive-transgressive cycles. The El Soplao amber shows Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy spectra similar to other Spanish Cretaceous ambers and it is characterized by the profusion of sub-aerial, stalactite-like flows. Well-preserved plant cuticles assigned to the conifer genera Frenelopsis and Mirovia are abundant in the beds associated with amber. Leaves of the ginkgoalean genera Nehvizdya and Pseudotorellia also occur occasionally. Bioinclusions mainly consist of fossil insects of the orders Blattaria, Hemiptera, Thysanoptera, Raphidioptera, Neuroptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera, although some spiders and spider webs have been observed as well. Some insects belong to groups scarce in the fossil record, such as a new morphotype of the wasp Archaeromma (of the family Mymarommatidae) and the biting midge Lebanoculicoides (of the monogeneric subfamily Lebanoculicoidinae). This new amber locality constitutes a very significant finding that will contribute to improving the knowledge and comprehension of the Albian non-marine paleoarthropod fauna

    Relationship between Skin Temperature, Electrical Manifestations of Muscle Fatigue, and Exercise-Induced Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness for Dynamic Contractions: A Preliminary Study

    Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) indicates the presence of muscle damage and impairs force production and control. Monitorization of DOMS is useful to improving recovery intervention plans. The magnitude of DOMS may relate to muscle fatigue, which can be monitored by surface electromyography (EMG). Additionally, growing interest has been expressed in determining whether the skin temperature over a muscle group during exercise to fatigue could be a non-invasive marker for DOMS. Here we determine whether skin temperature and manifestations of muscle fatigue during exercise are correlated and can predict DOMS after concentric-eccentric bicep curl exercises. We tested 10 young adults who performed concentric-eccentric bicep curl exercises to induce muscle damage in the biceps brachialis to investigate the relationship between skin temperature and fatigue during exercise and DOMS after exercise. Muscle activation and skin temperature were recorded during exercise. DOMS was evaluated 24 h after exercise. Data analysis was performed using Bayesian regression models with regularizing priors. We found significant muscle fatigue and an increase in skin temperature during exercise. DOMS was observed 24 h after exercise. The regression models showed no correlation of changes in skin temperature and muscle fatigue during exercise with DOMS 24 h after exercise. In conclusion, our preliminary results do not support a relationship between skin temperature measured during exercise and either muscle fatigue during exercise or the ability to predict DOMS 24 h after exercise

    Immediate effects of a telerehabilitation program based on aerobic exercise in women with fibromyalgia

    Background: We analyzed the immediate effects of a Telerehabilitation Program (TP) based on aerobic exercise in women with fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome during the lockdown declared in Spain due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was designed. Thirty-four women with FM were randomized into two groups: TP group and Control group. The intervention lasted 15 weeks, with 2 sessions per week. The TP based on aerobic exercise was guided by video and the intensity of each session was monitored using the Borg scale. Pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale), mechanical pain sensitivity (algometer), number of tender points, FM impact (Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire), pain catastrophizing (Pain Catastrophizing Scale), physiological distress (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), upper (Arm Curl Test) and lower-limb physical function (6-min Walk Test) were measured at baseline and after the intervention. Results: The TP group improved pain intensity (p = 0.022), mechanical pain sensitivity (p 0.05). Conclusion: A TP based on aerobic exercise achieved improvements on pain intensity, mechanical pain sensitivity, and psychological distress compared to a Control group during the lockdown declared in Spain due to COVID-19 pandemic

    Efecto de la adicción de extracto de vino tinto en la conservación de hamburguesas de cordero enriquecidas en ácidos grasos omega-3

    Red wine is a great source of polyphenols compounds, which exert a high antioxidant capacity. The effect of red wine extract (EV) on the oxidative stability of lamb patties in terms of metmyoglobin (MetMb) formation, lipid oxidation, protein oxidation, and the stability of docosahexaenoic fatty acid (DHA) was investigated. Ground lamb meat enriched in ω3 fatty acids was divided into four treatments. Three treatments were supplemented with 3 doses of EV being 50 (EV1), 100 (EV2) and 200 (EV3) mg GAE/kg meat and, the last one, without antioxidant supplementation, was kept as control (C). The lamb patties were stored under MAP (70% O2/30% CO2) during 9 days. There was an interaction between treatment (L) and storage period (PC) for MetMb proportion (p&lt;0.001) and DHA content (p&lt;0.01). Groups EV2 and EV3 showed less MetMb proportion and higher DHA content at the end of storage period in comparison to groups EV1 and C. Lipid and protein oxidation was affected by storage period (p&lt;0.001), increasing in all treatments.El vino tinto es una gran fuente de compuestos polifenólicos que presentan una gran capacidad antioxidante. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la adición de extracto de vino (EV) en la estabilidad oxidativa de hamburguesas de cordero, estudiando la formación de metamioglobina (MetMb), la oxidación lipídica, la oxidación proteica y el contenido en ácido docosahexaenoico (DHA). Se realizaron 4 lotes de carne picada de cordero, todos enriquecidos en ácidos grasos ω3. A tres lotes se les adicionó EV para obtener una concentración final de 50 (EV1), 100 (EV2) y 200 (EV3) mg GAE/kg de carne y el último lote, sin antioxidantes, se mantuvo como control (C). Las hamburguesas se conservaron en MAP (70% O2/30% CO2) durante 9 días. Se observó una interacción entre el lote (L) y el periodo de conservación (PC) para la proporción de MetMb (p&lt;0,001) y el contenido en DHA (p&lt;0,01). Los lotes EV2 y EV3 presentaron menor proporción de MetMb y mayor contenido en DHA que los lotes EV1 y C. La oxidación lipídica y proteica estuvo afectada por el periodo de conservación (p&lt;0,001) aumentando en todos los tratamientos
