    La concepción de la promoción de la actividad física relacionada con la salud varía en función de la perspectiva de análisis que se adopte de sus componentes. Desde una perspectiva de resultado se pone el énfasis en las variables objetivas de las que dependen las adaptaciones orgánicas que pueden prevenir o curar enfermedades. Desde una perspectiva de proceso, los beneficios de la actividad física para la salud se relacionan fundamentalmente con aspectos cualitativos vinculados con la práctica en sí misma. Ambas perspectivas son analizadas en este artículo concluyéndose que el creciente interés por la práctica contrasta con la ausencia de orientaciones que permitan promover la actividad física relacionada con la salu

    Traveling Material↔Semiotic Environments of Disability, Rehabilitation, and Physical Activity

    In this article, we apply narrative dialogism and new materialism to health research. We examine how material↔semiotic environments (MSEs) affect the rehabilitation process of Patrick, a man who exercised with the aim to recover from spinal cord injury. The MSEs are considered embedded subcases within the overall holistic case of Patrick. Three MSEs were identified: the hospital gym, the personal gym, and the adapted gym. These are examined using the analytical lens of assemblages. First, the mutually affecting components of each MSE are described. Second, a larger environmental assemblage is identified, which is termed exercise-is-restitution assemblage. This composite assemblage illuminates the associations between the three MSEs, and reveals how restitution resonated across time and space. The article contributes to the literature by reconceptualizing restitution. It highlights the importance of the materiality of health-related narratives, and it reveals the potential of MSE for transforming rehabilitation and improving exercise promotion and maintenance

    Propiedades psicométricas de un cuestionario de Teoría de la Conducta Planeada en la actividad física en alumnado universitario con discapacidad

    El presente trabajo evalúa las propiedades psicométricas de un cuestionario de Teoría de la Conducta Planeada en la actividad física en una muestra de alumnado universitario con discapacidad. El cuestionario fue administrado a 772 universitarios españoles con discapacidad. La estructura factorial se validó mediante análisis factorial confirmatorio, y para valorar la validez de criterio se llevaron a cabo correlaciones de Spearman entre los constructos de la Teoría de la Conducta Planeada y el tiempo dedicado a la actividad física. La fiabilidad se evaluó mediante el coeficiente alfa de Cronbach. Se evaluaron dos modelos, uno de cuatro factores y uno de cinco factores. El modelo de cinco factores fue el que mejores resultados presentó (CFI=,97; RMSEA=,057; IC 90%=,049-,066) (α=0,870). También se encontraron relaciones positivas entre todos los constructos de la Teoría de la Conducta Planeada y el tiempo dedicado a la actividad física. Los resultados muestran que el instrumento desarrollado resulta válido y fiable y sugieren que “Autoeficacia” y “Controlabilidad” deben considerarse dos factores independientes dentro del modelo. En conclusión, el cuestionario que se ofrece puede ser una herramienta útil para avanzar en el estudio de los factores psicosociales que afectan a la práctica de actividad física de las personas con discapacidad

    Exploring Trans People's Narratives of Transition: Negotiation of Gendered Bodies in Physical Activity and Sport

    This paper explores how trans people who make transitions negotiate their gendered bodies in different moments of this process, and how their narrative storylines are emplotted in physical activity and (non)organized sports (PAS) participation. A qualitative semi-structured interview-based study was developed to analyze the stories of eight trans people (three trans women, two trans men, and three nonbinary persons) who participated in PAS before and during their gender disclosure. A thematic analysis was conducted to identify the patterns in the transition process and the structural analysis of the stories from the interviews. Three transition moments (the closet, opening up, and reassuring) were identified from the thematic analysis. Most participants showed difficulties in achieving their PAS participation during the two earlier moments. The predominance of failure storylines was found particularly in men, while success was more likely to appear in women because their bodies and choices fitted better with their PAS gender ideals. The nonbinary trans persons present alternative storylines in which corporeality has less influence on their PAS experiences. The knowledge provided on the moments and the stories of transition help to explain trans people's (non)involvement in PAS and to guide policymaking and professional action in PAS fields

    Treatment of spent pickling baths coming from hot dip galvanizing by means of an electrochemical membrane reactor

    The performance of a one (OCR) and a two-compartment electrochemical reactor in the presence of a cation-exchange membrane (CEM) for the zinc recovery present in the spent pickling baths is analyzed in this paper under galvanostatic control. These solutions, which mainly contain ZnCl2 and FeCl2 in aqueous HCl media, come from the hot dip galvanizing industry. The effect of the applied current, the dilution factor of the baths and the presence or absence of initial cathodic zinc is also studied. For the 1:50 diluted spent bath, OCR experiments initially present higher values of the figures of merit than those obtained in the presence of the CEM since zinc is close to the cathode from the first electrolysis instants. However, at long electrolysis times, OCR presents zinc redissolution for all the current values tested due to the chlorine and iron presence close to the zinc deposits. In addition, the iron codeposition phenomenon is also observed in the OCR experiments when pH values are close to 2. On the other hand, CEM experiments become very similar to the OCR experiments at long time values since the CEM under these experimental conditions prevents zinc redissolution phenomenon and also iron codeposition. When the 1:50 diluted bath is concentred to 1:10, OCR experiments present the same tendency as that observed for the 1:50 dilution factor but the effect of zinc redissolution is increased due to the greater amount of chlorine generated in the anode. Under these experimental conditions, iron deposition has also been observed in the presence of the cation-exchange membrane as the rate of zinc deposition is greater than that of zinc transport through the membrane, and the zinc/iron ratio in the cathodic compartment is not high enough to prevent iron codeposition. In both cases, the pH values when iron codeposits with zinc are close to 2 and the zinc/iron ratio is below 0.6.     Archaeology of insular sectors in the Beagle Channel (Argentina). The case of the archipelago of the Bridges Islands and adjacent islands

    En este trabajo se exponen los resultados de las recientes investigaciones arqueológicas realizadas en el sector del archipiélago de las islas Bridges e islas adyacentes (canal Beagle, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina). El uso del ambiente que llevaron a cabo los cazadores-recolectores marítimos de esta región es conocido a partir de los estudios efectuados principalmente en sitios arqueológicos de la costa sur de la Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego y de la costa norte de la isla Navarino. Hasta el momento no se había desarrollado de manera sistemática el estudio de islas pequeñas o islotes en el canal Beagle. Aquí se analiza el uso del archipiélago de las islas Bridges en relación con la distribución espacial y temporal de los sitios, así como el estudio de las estrategias humanas de su ocupación en función de la composición de los conjuntos arqueológicos. Los resultados obtenidos evidencian que el archipiélago de las islas Bridges fue integrado en los circuitos de movilidad regional desde el Holoceno medio, aunque los hallazgos indican una baja intensidad de ocupación para estos momentos. La elevada frecuencia de estructuras de concheros, así como el tamaño de sitios arqueológicos registrados en sectores circundantes a la línea de costa actual señalan una mayor intensidad de ocupación para momentos más tardíos del Holoceno. En conclusión, esta evidencia y la composición de los conjuntos arqueológicos conducen a sostener un uso programado de estos espacios a partir de la obtención de recursos que resultan críticos para la habitabilidad humana de estos sectores.This paper presents the results of recent archaeological investigations carried out in the Bridges Islands archipelago and adjacent islands (Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina). The use of this environment by maritime hunter-gatherers is known from research carried out mainly in archaeological sites along the southern coast of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego and the northern coast of Navarino Island. Until now, the study of small islands or islets in the Beagle Channel had not been systematically developed. Here, we analyze the use of the Bridges Islands archipelago in relation to the spatial and temporal distribution of the archaeological sites, as well as the study of human subsistence and settlement patterns, based on the composition of the archaeological assemblages. The results obtained show that the archipelago of the Bridges Islands was integrated into the regional mobility circuits since the Middle Holocene, although the findings indicate a low occupation intensity by that time. The high frequency of shell middens, as well as the size of archaeological sites recorded in sectors near the current coastline, points to a greater intensity of occupation for later moments of the Holocene. In conclusion, this evidence and the composition of archaeological assemblages lead to sustain a planned use of these spaces from the procurement of critical resources for the human habitability of these sectors

    A Compact Dication Source for Ba2+^{2+} Tagging and Heavy Metal Ion Sensor Development

    We present a tunable metal ion beam that delivers controllable ion currents in the picoamp range for testing of dry-phase ion sensors. Ion beams are formed by sequential atomic evaporation and single or multiple electron impact ionization, followed by acceleration into a sensing region. Controllability of the ionic charge state is achieved through tuning of electrode potentials that influence the retention time in the ionization region. Barium, lead, and cobalt samples have been used to test the system, with ion currents identified and quantified using a quadrupole mass analyzer. Realization of a clean Ba2+\mathrm{Ba^{2+}} ion beam within a bench-top system represents an important technical advance toward the development and characterization of barium tagging systems for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in xenon gas. This system also provides a testbed for investigation of novel ion sensing methodologies for environmental assay applications, with dication beams of Pb2+^{2+} and Cd2+^{2+} also demonstrated for this purpose

    Deep-sequencing reveals broad subtype-specific HCV resistance mutations associated with treatment failure

    A percentage of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients fail direct acting antiviral (DAA)-based treatment regimens, often because of drug resistance-associated substitutions (RAS). The aim of this study was to characterize the resistance profile of a large cohort of patients failing DAA-based treatments, and investigate the relationship between HCV subtype and failure, as an aid to optimizing management of these patients. A new, standardized HCV-RAS testing protocol based on deep sequencing was designed and applied to 220 previously subtyped samples from patients failing DAA treatment, collected in 39 Spanish hospitals. The majority had received DAA-based interferon (IFN) a-free regimens; 79% had failed sofosbuvir-containing therapy. Genomic regions encoding the nonstructural protein (NS) 3, NS5A, and NS5B (DAA target regions) were analyzed using subtype-specific primers. Viral subtype distribution was as follows: genotype (G) 1, 62.7%; G3a, 21.4%; G4d, 12.3%; G2, 1.8%; and mixed infections 1.8%. Overall, 88.6% of patients carried at least 1 RAS, and 19% carried RAS at frequencies below 20% in the mutant spectrum. There were no differences in RAS selection between treatments with and without ribavirin. Regardless of the treatment received, each HCV subtype showed specific types of RAS. Of note, no RAS were detected in the target proteins of 18.6% of patients failing treatment, and 30.4% of patients had RAS in proteins that were not targets of the inhibitors they received. HCV patients failing DAA therapy showed a high diversity of RAS. Ribavirin use did not influence the type or number of RAS at failure. The subtype-specific pattern of RAS emergence underscores the importance of accurate HCV subtyping. The frequency of “extra-target” RAS suggests the need for RAS screening in all three DAA target regions

    Evolution of the use of corticosteroids for the treatment of hospitalised COVID-19 patients in Spain between March and November 2020: SEMI-COVID national registry

    Objectives: Since the results of the RECOVERY trial, WHO recommendations about the use of corticosteroids (CTs) in COVID-19 have changed. The aim of the study is to analyse the evolutive use of CTs in Spain during the pandemic to assess the potential influence of new recommendations. Material and methods: A retrospective, descriptive, and observational study was conducted on adults hospitalised due to COVID-19 in Spain who were included in the SEMI-COVID- 19 Registry from March to November 2020. Results: CTs were used in 6053 (36.21%) of the included patients. The patients were older (mean (SD)) (69.6 (14.6) vs. 66.0 (16.8) years; p < 0.001), with hypertension (57.0% vs. 47.7%; p < 0.001), obesity (26.4% vs. 19.3%; p < 0.0001), and multimorbidity prevalence (20.6% vs. 16.1%; p < 0.001). These patients had higher values (mean (95% CI)) of C-reactive protein (CRP) (86 (32.7-160) vs. 49.3 (16-109) mg/dL; p < 0.001), ferritin (791 (393-1534) vs. 470 (236- 996) µg/dL; p < 0.001), D dimer (750 (430-1400) vs. 617 (345-1180) µg/dL; p < 0.001), and lower Sp02/Fi02 (266 (91.1) vs. 301 (101); p < 0.001). Since June 2020, there was an increment in the use of CTs (March vs. September; p < 0.001). Overall, 20% did not receive steroids, and 40% received less than 200 mg accumulated prednisone equivalent dose (APED). Severe patients are treated with higher doses. The mortality benefit was observed in patients with oxygen saturation </=90%. Conclusions: Patients with greater comorbidity, severity, and inflammatory markers were those treated with CTs.
