Environmental sustainability assessment of municipal solid waste management through carbon footprint

    Get PDF
One of the most challenging issues for building sustainable cities is the improvement of municipal solid waste management (MSWM), which requires a substantial effort to reduce its production and improve its different stages: collection (or pre-collection/containerization), transport and treatment. Each of these stages has environmental impacts stemming from the use of bags to hold the waste generated by residents in their homes, from the containers placed in public roads for drop-off, from the use of lorries or systems to transport waste to the processing plants, and from the construction and operation of plants to treat each waste fraction. In Europe, the Waste Framework Directive specifies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a necessary policy-making tool, ensuring that impacts are assessed from cradle to grave, and avoiding ?hiding? impacts by moving them to other countries or stages of production/consumption. One of the environmental impacts evaluated is climate change (CC), in which greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the whole life cycle are calculated: carbon footprint (CF). This poster shows a methodology, based on LCA standards (ISO 14040 / 14044 / 14067), to calculate CF of MSWM. This methodology was applied to Madrid City

16th European Public Health Conference 2023 Our Food, Our Health, Our Earth: A Sustainable Future for Humanity Dublin, Ireland 8-11 November 2023.Background: The measures imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially social distancing, had important effects on feelings of loneliness. The objective of this work is to assess the perception of loneliness in older adults living in nursing homes during the pandemic, how it has changed during the pandemic and its explanatory factors. Methods: The data come from the cross-sectional project "Protective environments of the elderly in health crises", carried out in the Community of Madrid (Spain) in 2021. The variables used were the frequency of feelings of loneliness and its change during the pandemic, as well as socio-demographic, health, emotional and contextual characteristics. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were calculated. Results: The sample consisted of 447 people; mean age was 83.8; 63.1% were women; half of the sample were widowed; 40% had an educative level lower than primary. Almost 3 out of 10 residents stated that they often or always/almost always felt alone. In the regression model, loneliness was negatively associated with age, number of medications, emotional balance, coping ability, self-perception of aging, and engaging in rewarding activities; while having a low assessment of mobility in the residential environment was positively associated. In addition, 28% of the participants who declared loneliness, also felt lonelier than before the pandemic. The variables associated with change in feelings of loneliness were age, self-perception of aging and a low assessment of the residential environment. Conclusions: The restrictions on mobility and social relationships during the COVID-19 epidemic have affected older people who were living in residences, with an increase in the feeling of loneliness related to demographic, emotional and contextual variables. Interventions on the design of residential spaces can mitigate the effects of isolation and loneliness related to health crises such as COVID-19 pandemic.S

Bex3 dimerization regulates NGF-dependent neuronal survival and differentiation by enhancing trkA gene transcription

The development of the nervous system is a temporally and spatially coordinated process that relies on the proper regulation of the genes involved. Neurotrophins and their receptors are directly responsible for the survival and differentiation of sensory and sympathetic neurons; however, it is not fully understood how genes encoding Trk neurotrophin receptors are regulated. Here, we show that rat Bex3 protein specifically regulates TrkA expression by acting at the trkA gene promoter level. Bex3 dimerization and shuttling to the nucleus regulate the transcription of the trkA promoter under basal conditions and also enhance nerve growth factor (NGF)-mediated trkA promoter activation. Moreover, qChIP assays indicate that Bex3 associates with the trkA promoter within a 150 bp sequence, immediately upstream from the transcription start site, which is sufficient to mediate the effects of Bex3. Consequently, the downregulation of Bex3 using shRNA increases neuronal apoptosis in NGF-dependent sensory neurons deprived of NGF and compromises PC12 cell differentiation in response to NGF. Our results support an important role for Bex3 in the regulation of TrkA expression and in NGF-mediated functions through modulation of the trkA promoter. This work was supported by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación Grant BFU2008-00162, by Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad Grant (BFU2011-22898 to J.C.A. and BFU2013-39394-P to P.P.), by a Marie Curie International Reintegration Grant within the European Community 7th Framework Programme, by the Consejería de Educación Grant SA074A08, and by a Consejería de Sanidad de Junta Castilla y León grant to J.C.A. Differences in gene expression patterns between cultured and natural Haloquadratum walsbyi ecotypes

Solar crystallizer ponds are characterized by high population density with a relatively simple community structure in terms of species composition. The microbial community in the solar saltern of Santa Pola (Alicante, Spain), is largely dominated by the hyperhalophilic square archaeon Haloquadratum walsbyi. Here we studied metatranscriptomes retrieved from a crystallizer pond during the winter of 2012 and summer of 2014 and compared Hqr. walsbyi’s transcription patterns with that of the cultured strain Hqr. walsbyi HBSQ001. Significant differences were found between natural and the cultured grown strain in the distribution of transcript levels per gene. This likely reflects the adaptation of the cultured strain to the relative homogeneous growth conditions while the natural species, which is represented by multiple ecotypes, is adapted to heterogeneous environmental conditions and challenges of nutrient competition, viral attack, and other stressors. An important consequence of this study is that expression patterns obtained under artificial cultivation conditions cannot be directly extrapolated to gene expression under natural conditions. Moreover, we found 195 significantly differential expressed genes between the seasons, with 140 genes being higher expressed in winter and mainly encode proteins involved in energy and carbon source acquiring processes, and in stress responses.RR received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 818431 (SIMBA).

Development of efficient and safer vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is a must. Previous results obtained in our laboratory have demonstrated that DNA vaccines encoding B and T cell epitopes from type C FMDV, efficiently controlled virus replication in mice, while they did not protect against FMDV challenge in pigs, one of the FMDV natural hosts. The main finding of this work is the ability to improve the protection afforded in swine using a new DNA-vaccine prototype (pCMV-APCH1BTT), encoding FMDV B and T-cell epitopes fused to the single-chain variable fragment of the 1F12 mouse monoclonal antibody that recognizes Class-II Swine Leukocyte antigens. Half of the DNA-immunized pigs were fully protected upon viral challenge, while the remaining animals were partially protected, showing a delayed, shorter and milder disease than control pigs. Full protection in a given vaccinated-pig correlated with the induction of specific IFNγ-secreting T-cells, detectable prior to FMDV-challenge, together with a rapid development of neutralizing antibodies after viral challenge, pointing towards the relevance that both arms of the immune response can play in protection. Our results open new avenues for developing future FMDV subunit vaccines.Fil: Borrego, Belén. No especifíca;Fil: Argilaguet, Jordi M.. Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona; EspañaFil: Pérez Martín, Eva. Targets: To know the nutritional status in patients with heart failure (HF) and with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cared in a Barcelona’s primary health center and to describe the clinical and socio-demographic characteristics which may be related with the nutritional status.Method: A transversal descriptive study was performed during de year 2014. In nursing visits the following variables were collected: in HF patients, levels of functionality based in NYHA scale, in COPD patients, dyspnea grade based in BMRC scale. In both cases the body mass index (BMI) was determined; MNA scale is used, and also the physical activity and quality of life is evaluated by the EQ-5D scale. Results: Of the 192 participants, 59, 4% were men and had a mean age of 77, 64 years (ds10, 12. Of the studied diseases, 40, 1% were HF, 45, 8% COPD and 14, 1% both diseases). The risk of malnutrition was 11, 4% in COPD patients, 16, and 9% in people with HF and 33, 3% in both HF and COPD patients. (P 0,028)With the logistic regression with the other variables, the only associated factor was gender, having men an OR 3 (1,008-8, 95)Conclusions: The nutritional status gets worse in people with both pathologies in concomitantly way.Gender plays a crucial role in malnutrition or risk of the disease. &nbsp
