Business Process Reengineering: analysis and discussion of critical factors trhough a case study

Gran parte de los proyectos de Reingeniería de Procesos de Negocio (BPR) emprendidos por las organizaciones no alcanzan sus objetivos, habiéndose identificado su implantación como un factor esencial para el éxito. A partir de una revisión de la literatura especializada, hemos identificado un conjunto de factores relevantes en la implantación del BPR y los aspectos más debatidos en el ámbito académico y profesional sobre cada una de sus etapas. Para comprender mejor estos factores y etapas del BPR, hemos desarrollado un estudio de caso longitudinal con un enfoque de procesos. Este método nos ha permitido considerar con mayor profundidad el proceso de implantación de la reingeniería.Many projects of Business Process Reengineering (BPR) undertaken by organizations don't achieve their objectives, there being identified their implementation as an essential factor for the success. Starting from a revision of the specialized literature we have identified a group of excellent factors in the BPR implementation and the most debated aspects in the academic and professional environment of each one of general stages of it. For improving our comprehension on these factors and stages of BPR, we have developed a longitudinal case study with a analysis processual. This research method has allowed us to consider with more depth the implementation of the reengineering

Reingeniería de procesos y calidad total en la práctica empresarial: estudio de un caso

Las prácticas empresariales dirigidas a la mejora de los procesos de negocio y a la reducción de costes han suscitado un gran interés en la investigación en Contabilidad de Gestión en los años 80 y 90, destacando entre ellas por su amplia difusión entre las organizaciones, la Gestión de la Calidad Total y la Reingeniería de Procesos de Negocio. Este trabajo analiza las semejanzas y diferencias entre estas dos prácticas y su relación en la realidad empresarial, cuestiones ampliamente debatidas en el ámbito académico y profesional. Para ello, hemos desarrollado un estudio de caso longitudinal en el que se han puesto de manifiesto importantes diferencias en cuanto a sus objetivos, factores básicos, implantación y repercusiones organizativas, mostrándose además que son compatibles cuando se desarrollan secuencialmente

Impacts of the implementation of ERP systems on cash management: the redesign of treasury processes

The aim of this paper is to analyze aspects of organizational change induced by using process reengineering to implement new information technology (specifically an ERP system) on treasury department and its processes. Based on an intensive case study, the paper explores the changes in the treasury department of a large Spanish Electricity Company that implemented the SAP R/3 system. The results suggest that change had important repercussions on the technological, organizational and human dimensions of the treasury department. Evidence is also provided of the inter-relationship between these different dimensions

[Resumen] En esta investigación se deseaba averiguar qué peso tienen las imágenes mentales en el rendimiento académico. Interesaba ver la relación de diferentes tests de rendimiento en imagen con las calificaciones académicas. Se aplicó a una amplia muestra de estudiantes universitarios un cuestionario de imagen, el "Vividness ofVisual Imagery Questionnaire", y dos pruebas de rendimiento en imagen: la Escala Espacial del Test de Aptitudes Mentales Primarias y el "Vividness of Visual Imagery Test". Se constató que las dos pruebas de rendimiento en imagen correlacionan significativamente con el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes. El análisis de regresión indicó que la Escala Espacial explicaba un 6.76%·de la varianza del rendimiento académico. A large sample of university students completed the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire, and two performance-based tests of imaging ability, the Spatial Scale of the Primary Mental Abilities and the Vividness of Visual Imagery Test. Towards a new framework for domination

Dominating concepts constitute a cornerstone in Graph Theory. Part of the efforts in the field have been focused in finding different mathematical frameworks where domination notions naturally arise, providing new points of view about the matter. In this paper, we introduce one of these frameworks based in convexity. The main idea consists of defining a convexity in a graph, already used in image processing, for which the usual parameters of convexity are closely related to domination parameters. Moreover, the Helly number of this convexity may be viewed as a new domination parameter whose study would be of interest

Business process reengineering (BPR) applied to cash management: a study in a Spanish electricity company

Este trabajo tiene por objetivo analizar las causas, desarrollo y consecuencias del rediseño de los procesos de la Función Financiera y, más en particular, de la Gestión de Tesorería, para contribuir a una mayor comprensión de este tipo de cambio organizativo y así aumentar la eficacia de las organizaciones en su implantación. Para ello, hemos desarrollado un estudio de caso longitudinal en una compañía eléctrica española que tras ser absorbida en 1996, adoptó un enfoque de reingeniería para la implantación de un sistema de información económico-financiero integrado. Entre los principales resultados obtenidos podemos señalar: las importantes repercusiones de la reingeniería junto con otros inductores de cambio del entorno sobre las dimensiones tecnológica, organizativa y humana de la organización; la identificación de las principales variables que influyeron en el desarrollo del proyecto de reingeniería analizado; y la valiosa contribución del rediseño de procesos a la evolución hacia una Tesorería de Gestión.The aim of this paper is to analyse causes, process and consequences of the financial process redesign, specifically of the cash management processes. In this way, we can improve our knowledge about this type of organizational change and increase the efficacy of organizations when they implement it. For it, we have developed a longitudinal case study in a Spanish electricity company that was acquired in 1996 and after it had to adopt a reengineering focus to implement an economic- financial integrated information system. We can point out as the main obtained results: the significant repercussions of the reengineering and other change determinants on the technological, organizational and human dimensions of the analysed organization; the identification of the main variables that influenced on the development of the reengineering project; and the valuable contribution of business process reengineering in the evolution toward a Management Treasury

Steiner distance and convexity in graphs

We use the Steiner distance to define a convexity in the vertex set of a graph, which has a nice behavior in the well-known class of HHD-free graphs. For this graph class, we prove that any Steiner tree of a vertex set is included into the geodesical convex hull of the set, which extends the well-known fact that the Euclidean convex hull contains at least one Steiner tree for any planar point set. We also characterize the graph class where Steiner convexity becomes a convex geometry, and provide a vertex set that allows us to rebuild any convex set, using convex hull operation, in any graph
