    Pull-in control due to Casimir forces using external magnetic fields

    We present a theoretical calculation of the pull-in control in capacitive micro switches actuated by Casimir forces, using external magnetic fields. The external magnetic fields induces an optical anisotropy due to the excitation of magneto plasmons, that reduces the Casimir force. The calculations are performed in the Voigt configuration, and the results show that as the magnetic field increases the system becomes more stable. The detachment length for a cantilever is also calculated for a cantilever, showing that it increases with increasing magnetic field. At the pull-in separation, the stiffness of the system decreases with increasing magnetic field.Comment: accepted for publication in App. Phys. Let

    A Simplified Elastic Model for Seismic Analysis of Earth-Retaining Structures with Limited Displacements

    A simplified elastic model for analyzing static and dynamic interaction between earth-retaining structures and backfill within the range of small displacements is presented. The postulated model covers some of the available models as special cases. The model lends itself readily to the treatment of non-homogeneous backfills with elastic properties varying with depth. Internal (linear) damping in the backfill can be included without impairing the simplicity of the model. Radiation losses due to waves propagating horizontally in fills of semi-infinite extent are inherent to the postulated model. The solutions for some statical and dynamical problems of practical importance show satisfactory agreement with results based on the classical theory of elasticity

    GOOGLE EARTH ENGINE: APPLICATION OF ALGORITHMS FOR REMOTE SENSING OF CROPS IN TUSCANY (ITALY)

    Abstract. Remote sensing has become an important mean to assess crop areas, specially for the identification of crop types. Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a free platform that provides a large number of satellite images from different constellations. Moreover, GEE provides pixel-based classifiers, which are used for mapping agricultural areas. The objective of this work is to evaluate the performance of different classification algorithms such as Minimum Distance (MD), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and Na¨ıve Bayes (NB) on an agricultural area in Tuscany (Italy). Four different scenarios were implemented in GEE combining different information such as optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, indices and time series. Among the five classifiers used the best performers were RF and SVM. Integrating Sentinel-1 (S1) and Sentinel-2 (S2) slightly improves the classification in comparison to the only S2 image classifications. The use of time series substantially improves supervised classifications. The analysis carried out so far lays the foundation for the integration of time series of SAR and optical data
