Information measures of hydrogenic systems, Laguerre polynomials and spherical harmonics

    Get PDF
AbstractFisher's information and Shannon's entropy are two complementary information measures of a probability distribution. Here, the probability distributions which characterize the quantum-mechanical states of a hydrogenic system are analyzed by means of these two quantities. These distributions are described in terms of Laguerre polynomials and spherical harmonics, whose characteristics are controlled by the three integer quantum numbers of the corresponding states. We have found the explicit expression for the Fisher information, and a lower bound for the Shannon entropy with the help of an isoperimetric inequality

From the economic to the social contribution of the Social Economy. Monetary assessment of the social value created for the Spanish economy

    Get PDF
The role of the Social Economy (SE) in society is increasingly acknowledged by social agents and institutions, especially in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Commitment to SE requires the support of quantitative measurement of its contribution to society from an aggregate perspective. The difficulty in specifying it in quantitative terms is related to the assessment of the contribution of SE?s differentiating and intrinsic values. These values contribute to the fight against some structural problems that persist in modern society in terms of unemployment, inequality, territorial imbalance, environmental problems and social exclusion that surpass the economic sphere and involve the contribution to social goals, social utility and social and territorial cohesion. Our objective is an assessment in quantitative terms, including an estimation, in monetary terms, of the specific contribution of Social Market Economy (SMkE) firms to society linked to their distinctive principles, and thus their behaviour, in comparison to traditional profit-oriented firms, used as a control group. We use impact analysis techniques, with a simulation exercise, by which SMkE entities ?lose? their identity and behave like profit-oriented firms. The results obtained for Spain confirm the existence of differential behaviour that generates social value in several ways. In monetary terms, in 2017, SMkEs contributed 6,229 million Euros in benefits to Spanish society that would have been lost if SMkE entities had behaved like profit-oriented firms

New combinations of cry genes from Bacillus thuringiensis strains isolated from northwestern Mexico

Twenty eight Bacillus thuringiensis strains isolated from the Tijuana-Ensenada region of northwestern Mexico were analyzed to determine the distribution of cry and cyt genes. Crystal production by the strains was examined by scanning electron microscopy, which showed the predominance of cubic crystals. Alkaline-dissolved and trypsin activated crystals were also analyzed by SDS-PAGE, yielding bands of 40-200 kDa. The cry1 and cry2 genes were molecularly characterized using general and newly designed specifi c primers in addition to other oligonucleotides (cry3, cry4, cry8, cry9, cry11, Nem, cry25, cry29 and cyt), resulting in the identifi cation of novel gene combinations. The use of specifi c primers for cry1A, cry1B, cry1C, cry1D, cry1E, cry1F and cry2Aa, cry2Ab, cry2Ac, cry2Ad showed differences in the distribution of cry1 (36 %), cry2 (71 %), and cyt (40 %) in strains from Tijuana-Ensenada compared to other previously studied regions. Bioassays were conducted on Manduca sexta larvae to analyze the Cry insecticidal capacity of the isolated strains. The hemolytic activity of the Cyt toxinfrom the same strains was assessed in human erythrocytes. [Int Microbiol 2012; 15(4):209-216

Recovering Ancient Grapevine Varieties: From Genetic Variability to In Vitro Conservation, A Case Study

    Get PDF
A great number of varieties have been described in grapevine; however, few of them are currently in use. The increasing concern on varietal diversity loss has encouraged actions for recovering and preserving grapevine germplasm, which represents valuable resources for breeding as well as for diversification in grapevine-derived products. On the other hand, it is expected that this important crop, which is distributed in warm areas worldwide, will suffer the climate changes. Therefore, it is also convenient the identification of intravarietal variability and the recovery of accessions well adapted to particular environments. In this chapter, we will contribute to highlight the importance of recovering ancient materials, the usefulness of SSR markers to determine their molecular profile, the importance to analyze their virus status, and the possibilities that offer biotechnological tools for virus sanitation and in vitro storage as a complement of field preservation. In this context, we have evaluated different grapevine accessions and developed in vitro culture protocols for micropropagation, sanitation, and storage grapevine cultivars. In this work, we report the results obtained for the historic variety “Valencí Blanc” (or “Beba”) and the historic and endangered variety “Esclafagerres” (“Esclafacherres” or “Esclafacherris”)

Notch Signaling Pathway Is Activated in Motoneurons of Spinal Muscular Atrophy

    Get PDF
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neurodegenerative disease produced by low levels of Survival Motor Neuron (SMN) protein that affects alpha motoneurons in the spinal cord. Notch signaling is a cell-cell communication system well known as a master regulator of neural development, but also with important roles in the adult central nervous system. Aberrant Notch function is associated with several developmental neurological disorders; however, the potential implication of the Notch pathway in SMA pathogenesis has not been studied yet. We report here that SMN deficiency, induced in the astroglioma cell line U87MG after lentiviral transduction with a shSMN construct, was associated with an increase in the expression of the main components of Notch signaling pathway, namely its ligands, Jagged1 and Delta1, the Notch receptor and its active intracellular form (NICD). In the SMNΔ7 mouse model of SMA we also found increased astrocyte processes positive for Jagged1 and Delta1 in intimate contact with lumbar spinal cord motoneurons. In these motoneurons an increased Notch signaling was found, as denoted by increased NICD levels and reduced expression of the proneural gene neurogenin 3, whose transcription is negatively regulated by Notch. Together, these findings may be relevant to understand some pathologic attributes of SMA motoneurons. This work was supported by grants from Fundación Genoma España, GENAME to JL, LT and RMS, and from Instituto de Salud Carlos III-Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias (PI11/01047) to RMS. Planeación estratégica de la gestión institucional para la incorporación y apropiación de las TIC en una institución educativa oficial del distrito de Santa Marta

    Get PDF
