On benevolence and love of others
Hobbes is famous for his insights into the impact of manâs fear, glory and greed on war and peace, not for his views on the bearing of menâs benevolence on the commonwealth. Are Hobbesian people even capable of love of others? In the literature, we find two main answers: one view is that Hobbes ruled out the possibility of disinterested benevolence among men; the other is that Hobbes considered actions driven by genuine benevolence possible but uncommon. After reviewing in broad outlines the two above positions, this chapter seeks to demonstrate the claim that Hobbes did not consider relevant to establish if men are capable of genuine benevolence or not, because he maintained that benevolent men can be as inept as egoists in differentiating apparent and real good for themselves and their loved ones and the effect of misguided altruism on the commonwealth is as damaging as the effect of ill-advised egoism.Postprin
The Priority of Locomotion in Aristotleâs Physics
The book inquires into Aristotleâs claim that of the four kinds of change that exist, locomotion is the most fundamental and important kind. In a first step, the author shows that the arguments for the thesis of locomotionâs priority play a crucial role in the argument of Physics VIII and for the understanding of Aristotleâs philosophy of nature in general. The main focus of the book lies on the thorough and careful reconstruction and analysis of the arguments Aristotle presents in Physics VIII
Based Liberalism«Hobbes' scholarship concentrates on the rational actor, but broadly ignores both the body and the bodily passions in Hobbesâ political philosophy. The book z addresses this issue and develops a new reading of Hobbesâ argument in the z. Furthermore, the book shows how Hobbes grounds his rhetorical strategies in a distinct theory of the human passions, thereby making an important contribution to the problem of how to interpret Hobbesâ political philosophy

The puzzle of the sovereignâs smile and the inner complexity of Hobbesâs theory of authorisation
Hobbesâs theory of authorisation poses numerous puzzles to scholars. The weightiest of these conundrums is a supposed contradiction between chapter 17 of Leviathan, that calls for unconditional submission to the sovereign, and chapter 21, that defends the liberties of the subject. This article offers a fresh perspective on the theoryâs consistency, function and addressees. While existing research doubts the theoryâs consistency, focuses on its immunisation function and on the subjects as the theoryâs main addresses, the paper argues that Hobbesâs theory of authorisation is consistent with the doctrine of the liberty of subjects, and that it serves the dual purpose of immunising the sovereign against criticism and disciplining the sovereign via a counsel of memento mori: A hitherto underexplored element of authorisation theory is a reminder of the mortality of sovereignty directed at the sovereign to convince him to make restricted use of his absolute right to rule. Hobbesâs theory of authorisation can thus be read as part of a complex argumentative strategy for peace, rooted in a âliberal absolutismâ which is not as paradoxical as it sounds, and which is reflected in the frontispiece by the friendly smile of the sovereign
